Evidence supporting the need for bariatric surgery to address the obesity epidemic in the United States.

Despite aims at prevention, obesity in the United States is now an epidemic. Along with the rise in obesity, the United States has experienced a concomitant rise in obesity-related comorbidities. Furthermore overweight and obesity present a major economic public health challenge. Physicians are likely to recommend weight loss to their overweight patients. Diet, exercise, and behavior modification are often effective during the course of treatment but are subject to recidivism and post-treatment weight gain. Obesity intervention mandates that providers consider the need for surgery in many case…

Malnutrition and Obesity in Children With ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: Low threshold of dissatisfaction and frustration in child and adolescent patients with ADHD lead to changes in dietary pattern with contribution to the development of obesity and other nutritional disorders. METHODS: A total of 362 patients with the diagnosis of ADHD and 390 children without any chronic disease were included to the study. We evaluated the anthropometric measurements for all cases. RESULTS: The overweight/obese cases according to weight for height (WFH) and body mass index scores were more likely in ADHD cases than control group. Malnourished cases according to WFH…

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in a Nigerian child: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus initially said to be an adult disease is now reported in children and adolescents in the developed countries because of increased incidence of obesity and sedentary habits associated with westernization and lifestyle changes. There is a paucity of reports from Africa. METHOD: A 9 year old overweight female with a BMI of 28 kg/m(2) and a strong family history of DM in at least two generations presented with polyuria and weight loss. The mother had gestational diabetes and is on oral hypoglycaemics. Fasting blood sugar was 11.9 mmol/l. Urinalysis had +1 of g…

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and other androgen excess-related conditions: can changes in dietary intake make a difference?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that involves the excess production of androgens. It affects up to 10% of all American women and can lead to the development of acne, hirsutism, and infertility. It has also been associated with coronary heart disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Over half of the women who are diagnosed with PCOS are overweight or obese. Recommendations are made for overweight/obese women to lose weight via diet and exercise. Women with PCOS should also consider maintaining a diet that is patterned after the type 2 diabetes diet. This diet includes an incre…

Current pharmacotherapeutic concepts for the treatment of obesity in adults.

Obesity is one of the greatest public health challenges of the twenty-first century. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that in 2005 approximately 1.6 billion adults were overweight and at least 400 million adults were obese. The prevalence of obesity is still continuing to increase dramatically. Overweight and obese people carry a higher risk for a variety of cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral occlusive artery disease. Weight loss is considered to be the initial step which helps to prevent or to control the clinical consequen…

Breast-feeding and diabetes: long-term impact on mothers and their infants.

In the general population, breast-feeding is associated with a reduced risk of the offspring being overweight later in life by 22% to 24% across the age spectrum, from preschool children to adults. There is a dose-response gradient with increasing duration of breast-feeding, and lowest risk with prolonged, exclusive breast-feeding. Breast-feeding has been shown to slow infant growth up to 2 years of age. By contrast, the scientific evidence is inconclusive about whether breast-feeding protects against the onset of overweight and subsequent development of type 2 diabetes among offspring whose m…

Effect of a yearlong, moderate-intensity exercise intervention on the occurrence and severity of menopause symptoms in postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of moderate-intensity exercise on the occurrence and severity of menopause symptoms. DESIGN: A yearlong, randomized, clinical trial, conducted in Seattle, WA, with 173 overweight, postmenopausal women not taking hormone therapy in the previous 6 months. The intervention was a moderate-intensity exercise intervention (n = 87) versus stretching control group (n = 86). Using logistic regression, odds ratios comparing exercise with controls were calculated at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months for menopause symptoms and their severity. RESULTS: There was a significant incre…

[Significance of body weight in degenerative skeletal diseases (author's transl)].

An attempt was made to ascertain the influence of body weight on degenerative skeletal diseases in a group of 250 hospitalized patients suffering from gonarthrosis and/or lumbar syndrome. The current average body weight according to age, size and sex (Geigy Tables) were used as the standard. Patients with gonarthrosis were significantly overweight while patients with lumbar syndrome fell within the normal range. A prearthrosis or prearthritic deformity of the vertebral column or knee could be demonstrated in the majority of patients, particularly the younger ones. In most of the older patients…

Correlation Between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Severity of Bronchial Asthma in Children: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional status is increasingly recognised as a key modifier of asthma severity in children. Both obesity and undernutrition … considered significant. RESULTS: Of the 42 children, 25 (59.52%) had a normal BMI, 8 (19.05%) were overweight or obese, 7 (16.67%) were underweight, and 2 (4.76%) were at risk of overweight. Increasing BMI was significantly associated with greater asthma severity (p=0.007). Overweight or obese children predominantly had moderate persistent asthma (four of e …

Unveiling the Therapeutic Potential of the Second-Generation Incretin Analogs Semaglutide and Tirzepatide in Type 1 Diabetes and Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease caused by the immune-mediated destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells, resulting in the lifelong need for exogenous insulin. Over the last few years, overweight and obesity have recently emerged as growing health issues also afflicting patients with T1D. In this context, the term "double diabetes" has been coined to indicate patients with T1D who have a family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and/or patients with T1D who are affected by insulin resistance and/or overweight/obesity and/or metabolic syndrome. …

Protocol for the LIFEH project: a prospective observational study to explore lifestyle among people living with HIV experiencing weight gain, looking beyond antiretroviral therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Weight gain, together with the onset of overweight and obesity, is a relevant emerging health issue among people living with HIV (PLWH). A large body of literature recognises this issue as a part of the secondary effects of some antiretroviral therapy (ART), but little is known about the role of lifestyle. In order to assess the role of modifiable aspects of lifestyle in addition to ART on the onset of overweight and obesity, we designed a prospective observational study among PLWH. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a prospective observational study among PLWH aged 18-65 years atten…

Association of Antibiotic Use during the First 6 Months of Life with Body Mass of Children.

In this study, our objective was to assess the association of body mass in preschool children with the use of antibiotics within 6 months after birth. National administrative databases were used to examine all children born between 2008 and 2009 in Korea. Exposure was defined as the use of systemic antibiotics during the first 6 months of age. The observed outcomes were stunting (height for age [HFA] z score < −2.0), short stature (HFA z score < −1.64), overweight (body mass index [BMI] for age z score ≥ 1.04), and obesity (BMI for age z score ≥ 1.64), and the children’s height and body weight…
