Sexually transmitted diseases in pregnancy: diagnosis, impact, and intervention.

Sexually transmitted diseases are a major health problem for the 1990s. The etiology of gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, trichomonas, and bacterial vaginitis are presented, along with their treatment, pregnancy-related factors, intrapartum and neonatal factors, and follow-up. The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases has increased, and health care professionals must teach not only about disease impact but also about lifestyle and behavioral changes.

Prenatal cocaine exposure, early cannabis use, and risky sexual behavior at age 25.

BACKGROUND: Prior research on prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) indicates that exposed children experience behavioral dysregulation resulting in risky adolescent behavior including earlier initiation of cannabis use and sexual intercourse. The goal of this study was to examine the long-term effects of PCE on adult sexual behavior. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study of the association between PCE and risky adult sexual behavior and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in 202 young adults (mean age = 27, SD = 0.98 years). The sample was 55% female, 46% White, and 54% Black. Data from t

Teachers as co-regulators of children's emotions: A descriptive study of teacher-child emotion dialogues in special education.

BACKGROUND: The study examined how teachers and children with emotional and behavioral disturbances engage in dialogues about children's emotional experiences. Dialogues about emotions are an important strategy for teachers to co-regulate children's emotions but have remained understudied. AIMS: This study aimed to explore whether the Autobiographical Emotional Events Dialogue (AEED) can help to assess the quality of teacher-child emotion dialogues about past emotional events and examined associations with child behavior and teacher-child relationship quality. METHOD: The sample included 85

Psychiatric Characteristics Across Individuals With PTEN Mutations.

Germline heterozygous PTEN mutations have been associated with high prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and elevated rates and severity of broadly defined behavioral problems. However, limited progress has been made toward understanding whether PTEN mutation is associated with specific psychiatric co-morbidity profiles when compared to idiopathic ASD. The current study aimed to utilize a cross-measure approach to compare concurrent psychiatric characteristics across children and adolescents with PTEN mutation with (PTEN-ASD; n = 38) and without ASD (PTEN-No ASD; n = 23), and ASD with

Behavioral Effects of a Locomotor-Based Physical Activity Intervention in Preschoolers.

BACKGROUND: Poor adaptive learning behaviors (ie, distractibility, inattention, and disruption) are associated with behavior problems and underachievement in school, as well as indicating potential attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Strategies are needed to limit these behaviors. Physical activity (PA) has been suggested to improve behavior in school-aged children, but little is known about this relationship in preschoolers. This study examined the effects of a PA intervention on classroom behaviors in preschool-aged children. METHODS: Eight preschool classrooms (n = 71 children; age =

Behavioral and psychiatric disorders in Prader-Willi syndrome: a population study in Japan.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetically determined neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by mental retardation and distinct physical, behavioral, and psychiatric features. Based on parents' questionnaires, we examined the prevalence of behavioral and psychiatric disorders of 165 persons with PWS aged 2-31 years in Japan. The data were analyzed comparing four different age groups with PWS: group 1, 2-5 years (n=34); group 2, 6-11 years (n=57); group 3, 12-17 years (n=45); and group 4, 18-31 years (n=29). Further, we compared the results of our PWS group 4 with those of 42 age-, gender-

Sexual identity and practices relating to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

All sexually transmitted diseases are behaviorally correlated. A thorough understanding of the behaviors involved in the spread of sexually transmitted disease will increase the physician's ability to suspect, properly identify, and treat the disease. An appreciation of the common sexual behavior in contemporary American society will allow the physician to more effectively address patients' concerns about their sexuality and sexual behavior and identify areas for which further professional counseling is appropriate. Physicians are the most trusted source of health information, often counsel th

Emotion regulation in families of autistic children and adolescents: A longitudinal study.

This study investigated whether parental emotion-regulation difficulties are prospectively associated with increased emotion-regulation challenges in autistic children and adolescents and explored the underlying mechanisms and behavioral implications of these potential intergenerational associations. Over three time points (T1, T2, T3) spanning 2 years, 363 parents of autistic children and adolescents from Hong Kong provided questionnaire data. Path analyses revealed that parental emotion-regulation difficulties at T1 were associated with greater negative emotional expressiveness at T2, which

Maternal bioactive lipids during pregnancy and early childhood neurodevelopment and behavior.

BACKGROUND: Maternal immune activation, including inflammation and oxidative stress during pregnancy, has been linked to child neurodevelopmental problems (NDP) and emotional and behavioral problems (EBP). Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and their oxidized metabolites (oxylipins) are important bioactive lipids that modulate immune responses, inflammation, and oxidative stress. However, their roles in child NDP and EBP remain unclear. METHODS: This study included 259 mother-child pairs from the PROTECT birth cohort in Puerto Rico. Maternal plasma samples collected around 26 weeks' gestatio

Psychopathology and social competencies of adolescents who were extremely low birth weight.

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown that infants who were extremely low birth weight (ELBW) are particularly vulnerable to problems related to inattention and hyperactivity at school age. It is not known whether these problems persist to adolescence. OBJECTIVE: To explore and compare the levels of psychopathology in a regional cohort of ELBW infants and sociodemographically matched term controls as reported by teens and their parents. DESIGN/METHODS: Cross-sectional cohort study/geographically defined region. PARTICIPANTS: TEENS: ELBW 141/169 (83%) and control 122/145 (84%), aged 12 to 16

Developmental Pathways to Adult Mental Health in Adolescent Parents: Childhood and Early Adolescent Antecedents.

This study examined three questions: 1) what are the childhood predictors of becoming a teenage parent (versus a first-time parent as a young adult); 2) does becoming a parent in the teen years carry higher risk of young-adult internalizing and externalizing problems than becoming a first-time parent as a young adult; and 3) does the relation between childhood factors and adult mental health differ between teen parents and adult parents. We combined data from two U.S. samples that were followed from age 6 through age 35. Family socioeconomic status, one's parent's marital status, parenting beh

Engaging Black and Latinx Communities in Building Capacity for Behavioral Health.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 affected nearly every aspect of people's lives worldwide. In the United States, the consequences of closures and quarantine increased stress, worry, isolation, and mental health and substance use problems, leading to behavioral health (BH) problems. These conditions were exacerbated among Black and Latinx populations by language barriers, lack of mental health access, shortage of mental health providers, inadequate or lack of insurance coverage, and the health care system's unfamiliarity with Black and Latinx cultures and consequent Black and Latinx distrust in it. METH

Measurement of Eco-Anxiety in the Chinese Context: Development and Validation of a New Eco-Anxiety Scale Based on the Hogg Eco-Anxiety Scale.

With the increasing complexity of ecological and environmental problems, eco-anxiety is increasingly recognized as an essential problem in China. Despite its prevalence, there is a lack of valid measurements in China. The purpose of the present study was to expand the Hogg Eco-anxiety Scale (HEAS) under the Chinese context and evaluate the psychometric attributes of the expanded scale. Specifically, a qualitative study was conducted in Study 1 (n = 17) to expand the HEAS in the Chinese context. Exploratory factor analysis in Study 2 (n = 297) and confirmatory factor analysis in Study 3 (n = 37

Time-Restricted Ketogenic Diet in Huntington's Disease: A Case Study.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disorder with limited treatment options. Substantial evidence implicates mitochondria dysfunction in brain and skeletal muscle in the pathogenesis of HD. Metabolic strategies, such as fasting and ketogenic diets, theoretically enhance brain and muscle metabolism and mitochondria function, which may improve the clinical symptoms of HD. We report the case of a 41-year-old man with progressive, deteriorating HD who pursued a time-restricted ketogenic diet (TRKD) for 48 weeks. Improvements were measured in his motor symptoms (52%

Management of sleep disorders among children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders: A practical guide for clinicians.

There is a complex relationship between sleep disorders and childhood neurodevelopmental, emotional, behavioral and intellectual disorders (NDEBID). NDEBID include several conditions such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning (intellectual) disorders. Up to 75% of children and young people (CYP) with NDEBID are known to experience different types of insomnia, compared to 3% to 36% in normally developing population. Sleep disorders affect 15% to 19% of adolescents with no disability, in comparison with 26% to 36% among CYP w

Trait anxiety and self-concept among children and adolescents with food neophobia.

Food problems in children and adolescents often have a detrimental effect on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of their parents. However, the impact of such problems on the psychological wellbeing of children and adolescents themselves has been less widely studied. The purpose of this study was to determine whether children and adolescents with food neophobia differed in trait anxiety and dimensions of self-concept from their neophilic and their average peers. A community sample of 831 participants (368 males and 463 females) between the ages of 8 and 16 were classified into six groups

[Formula: see text]Executive functioning and its relation to ASD and ADHD symptomatology in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS; velo-cardio-facial-syndrome) are at risk for the developmental disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, the relation between executive functioning (EF) and the severity of ADHD and ASD symptoms is examined, since EF is known to be important in relation to emotional and behavioral problems. The participants consist of 58 children (38 females) with a mean age of 13.5 years (SD 2.6). Standardized assessment was used to evaluate the severity of ASD and ADHD symptomatology. The maj
