A Nation of Disasters: Lessons on Systemic Risks and Cascading Impacts From Malawi's COVID-19 Experience.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the cascading and systemic nature of risks, in low-income, multi-hazard contexts such as Malawi, where pre-existing vulnerabilities amplified impacts across health, economic, and social systems. This study draws on qualitative data from stakeholder workshops and key informant interviews, triangulated with national statistics, to analyze how overburdened health systems, disrupted livelihoods, and inequitable resource distribution heightened socio-economic fragility. It also examines how concurrent hazards, including flooding and cholera outbreaks, interacted with t

A qualitative investigation of the occupational perceptions of firefighters with or without post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

This qualitative study aims to examine the relationships between post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and the perceptions of Turkish firefighters, categorized by lower and higher degrees of PTSS, regarding work and family life, social interactions, and professional circumstances. Eleven firefighters participated in the interviews. The data was analyzed using a thematic approach. The high-PTSS group displayed symptoms such as re-experiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal, which impeded their daily functioning and occupational performance. The low-PTSS group recognized these symptoms as a natura…

Psychological Functioning Among Latino Victims of Teen Dating Violence: The Role of Relational and Collective Resources.

This study examined whether the relationship between teen dating violence (DV) and psychological functioning (depression, anxiety, and hostility) varied as a function of relational and collective resources (social support, familism, and school connectedness) among Latino teen victims of DV. Data came from a subset of youth who experienced DV (n = 95) from the Dating Violence Among Latinos Adolescents Study, a national survey of Latino teens aged 12-18 years old. Multivariate regression models showed that school connectedness was associated with lower depression and anxiety for DV victims. Addi

The distributional impact of recessions: The global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic recession.

Using U.S. Current Population Survey data, this paper compares the distributional impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic Crisis and those of Global Financial Crisis in terms of (i) worker characteristics, (ii) job characteristics-"social" (where individuals interact to consume goods), "teleworkable" (where individuals have the option of working at home), and "essential" jobs (which were not subject to government mandated shutdowns during the recent recession), and (iii) wage distributions. We find that young and less educated workers have always been affected more in recessions, while women and Hisp

Eyes that bind us: Gaze leading induces an implicit sense of agency.

Humans feel a sense of agency over the effects their motor system causes. This is the case for manual actions such as pushing buttons, kicking footballs, and all acts that affect the physical environment. We ask whether initiating joint attention - causing another person to follow our eye movement - can elicit an implicit sense of agency over this congruent gaze response. Eye movements themselves cannot directly affect the physical environment, but joint attention is an example of how eye movements can indirectly cause social outcomes. Here we show that leading the gaze of an on-screen face in

GABAB Receptor Agonist R-Baclofen Reverses Social Deficits and Reduces Repetitive Behavior in Two Mouse Models of Autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is diagnosed by two core behavioral criteria, unusual reciprocal social interactions and communication, and stereotyped, repetitive behaviors with restricted interests. Excitatory/inhibitory imbalance is a prominent hypothesis for the etiology of autism. The selective GABAB receptor agonist R-baclofen previously reversed social deficits and reduced repetitive behaviors in a mouse model of Fragile X syndrome, and Arbaclofen improved some clinical symptoms in some Fragile X and ASD patients. To evaluate R-baclofen in a broader range of mouse models of ASD, we teste…

Host-parasite genotypic interactions in the honey bee: the dynamics of diversity.

Parasites are thought to be a major driving force shaping genetic variation in their host, and are suggested to be a significant reason for the maintenance of sexual reproduction. A leading hypothesis for the occurrence of multiple mating (polyandry) in social insects is that the genetic diversity generated within-colonies through this behavior promotes disease resistance. This benefit is likely to be particularly significant when colonies are exposed to multiple species and strains of parasites, but host-parasite genotypic interactions in social insects are little known. We investigated this

Social strain and cortisol regulation in midlife in the US.

Chronic stress has been implicated in a variety of adverse health outcomes, from compromised immunity to cardiovascular disease to cognitive … onments, can in the long run compromise HPA-axis functioning and ultimately affect health. Negative social interactions with family and friends may be a significant source of stress in daily life, constituting the type of recurrently stressful environment that could lead to compromised HPA functioning and altered diurnal cortisol rhythms. Meeting a binational research challenge: substance abuse among transnational Mexican farmworkers in the United States.

To help in understanding the manner in which community, individual, and other factors in the United States and Mexico contribute to drug use among transnational migrants, this paper introduces a binational social ecology model of substance abuse in this population. We draw on our 2 NIH-funded ethnographic studies-1 on problem drinking and the other on drug abuse-among transnational Mexican workers in the mushroom industry of southeastern Pennsylvania. Our model demonstrates that major reasons for substance abuse among transnational migrants include nontraditional living arrangements in labor c

A single cooperative experience increases corticolimbic synaptic density and prosocial behavior.

Cooperation is typically studied as an output of the social brain, as opposed to an experience that shapes it. Here, we developed a task in rats that permits interaction while requiring joint action for reward. Cooperation depended on dyad familiarity and visual access. Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) to basolateral amygdala (BLA) projections were activated during cooperation with a familiar partner, whereas ACC to anterior insula (AI) projections were simultaneously suppressed regardless of familiarity. A single 90 min cooperative experience increased presynaptic marker SV2A - detected by pos

Mental Nerve Sensory Restoration in Pediatric Patients Using Cross-Facial Nerve Grafting.

Facial sensation has significant functional importance. Loss of sensation in the lower lip can cause significant morbidity, including the inability to detect dislodged food, drooling, and injury. The value of reinnervating lower lip sensation lies in mitigating these complications and enhancing functional recovery and social interaction. Cross-facial nerve grafting techniques can be used to restore facial sensation. We describe our technique and outcomes of 2 pediatric patients who underwent mental nerve sensory restoration with sural nerve cross-facial nerve grafting. The intact contralateral…

Improving the outcome in leukemia patients by controlling subthreshold depression and cancer-related fatigue.

Patients with leukemia often suffer from the combined effects of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and subthreshold depression, which mutually exacerbate each other in a vicious cycle. In this editorial, we comment on the article by Liu et al, published in the World Journal of Psychiatry. We further elucidate the profound impact of subthreshold depressive symptoms on the experience of CRF and complications in patients with leukemia. This editorial highlights the importance of early identification and treatment of subclinical depression, and advocates for a multidisciplinary and integrated treatment

Interactions between Hypertension and Breastfeeding: What Do We Know?

Substantial evidence indicates that breastfeeding reduces mortality and morbidity in infants. However, social changes in the 20th century resulted in a considerable decline in breastfeeding rates in many countries. Breast milk is crucial because of its nutritional, immunological, and emotional benefits and economic value. Approximately 10% of pregnancies are complicated by hypertensive syndromes, which are the most commonly diagnosed conditions during pregnancy. This perspective aims to explore how hypertension may interfere with the quality of human breast milk. While numerous studies have in
