To identify the etiologic agent of Legionnaire's disease, we examined patients' serum and tissue specimens in a search for toxins, bacteria, fungi, chlamydiae, rickettsiae and viruses. From the lungs of four of six patients we isolated a gram-negative, non-acid-fast bacillus in guinea pigs. The bacillus could be transferred to yolk sacs of embryonated eggs. The histochemical effects of the lethal concentration that kills 50% of larvae (LC50) of three biological agents, abamectin, Bacillus thuringiensis and spinosad on the carbohydrates (polysaccharides), proteins, nucleic acids and lipids content of the midgut and fat bodies of Culex pipiens 2nd instar larvae were studied. The results showed that the three tested compounds reduced the carbohydrates (polysaccharides), proteins, RNA synthesis and lipids content after 72 hours of treatment where abamectin was the most effective followed by Bacillus thuringiensis then spinosad.

OBJECTIVES: In this case report, we present a patient with ocular tuberculosis presenting with progressive unilateral corneal melting.
PATIENT: A 47-year-old female was admitted with melting at the inferior half of the peripheral cornea and inferior subconjunctival nodules. Biopsy material of the nodules was negative for tuberculosis bacillus. However, polymerase chain reaction of the biopsy sample revealed the DNA of the bacillus, and the diagnosis was confirmed.

Data on comparative molecular genetic analysis of pFra plasmids from plague bacillus belonging to either two biovars (antiqua and orientalis) are presented. It was established that during evolution these replicons were rearranged, which resulted in the differences between pFra plasmids of plague bacillus of antiqua biovar (Yersinia pestis 231 and Y. pestis 358/12) and that of orientalis biovar (Y. pestis A1122 and Y. pestis EV). These included inversions of two plasmid DNA regions and size differences of 3 kb.

Bacillus cereus typically causes a self-limited foodborne gastrointestinal (GI) illness. Severe invasive infection occurs rarely, mainly among immunocompromised hosts. We describe a cluster of B. cereus infections among 5 patients with acute myeloid leukemia and chemotherapy-induced neutropenia.
