Repetitive self-mutilation among Japanese eating disorder patients with drug use disorder: comparison with patients with methamphetamine use disorder.

Repetitive self-mutilation and drug use disorder are less prevalent in Japan, although the prevalence of eating disorder is comparable with rates in Western countries. However, repetitive self-mutilation has not previously been described in relation to eating disorder and drug use disorder in Japan. Subjects consisted of 19 patients with eating disorders and drug use disorders (ED+DUD) and 12 patients with methamphetamine use disorders (MAP). Subjects were drawn from 180 patients who were referred because of eating disorders and 22 patients who were referred because of methamphetamine-related

Clinical characteristics of patients with major affective disorders and comorbid migraine.

The present study was undertaken to examine the clinical characteristics of patients with major affective disorders and comorbid migraine. Patients (n = 102) with an index episode of either major depression or mania were interviewed with a semi-structured interview based partly on DSM-IV criteria and partly on Akiskal's criteria for affective temperaments. Compared to the patients without migraine (n = 49), the patients with comorbid migraine (n = 53) had a higher frequency of bipolar II disorder (43% vs. 10%), a lower frequency of bipolar I disorder (11% vs. 33%), an approximately equal frequ

Sexual abuse and eating disorders. Borderline personality disorder as a mediating factor?

Sexual abuse appears to be causally linked to eating disorders, particularly those involving bulimic features. However, the psychological factors that mediate between these two phenomena are not understood. Recent findings suggest that borderline personality disorder may explain some of the association. The present research investigates the potential links between reported sexual abuse, borderline personality disorder, and eating psychopathology in a case series of 100 women with eating disorders. The results suggest that borderline personality disorder is a psychological factor that explains

Food consumption and eating disorders in Latin America and the Caribbean: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between food consumption and eating disorders (ED) is pivotal, given that eating disorders are characterized by … all conducted in Brazil. The studies included adults diagnosed with binge eating disorder (BED) or bulimia nervosa (BN). No participants with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) were included in these studies. High energy variability was observed in the diets; when considering only binge eating episodes, the highest intake was found in participants diagnosed with BED. …

Exploring the utility of N-acetylcysteine for loss of control eating: protocol of an open-label single-arm pilot study.

BACKGROUND: A sense of loss of control over eating, such that eating occurs despite the intent not to, is common in people with obesity and eating disorders such as binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa. Currently, options for management of loss of control eating are limited. We recently determined that the pro-drug N-acetylcysteine (NAC) reduces compulsive-like eating in a rat model of diet-induced obesity. We will now conduct a single site, open-label pilot study to examine the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of NAC for loss of control eating in humans. METHODS: Thirt…

All had been in remission from the eating disorder for at least one year. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed with thematic analysis using an inductive approach. Associations between autism spectrum disorder and eating disorders with and without self-induced vomiting: an empirical study.

However, there was significant difference in the AQ score between bulimia nervosa and binge EDs (BED). Of the 4 ED subtypes, BED had the highest ASD traits. The non-vomiting group with illness duration < 4 years had a significantly higher AQ communication score than the vomiting group with illness duration ≥4 years. CONC …

Physiology of weight regain: Lessons from the classic Minnesota Starvation Experiment on human body composition regulation.

Since its publication in 1950, the Biology of Human Starvation, which describes the classic longitudinal Minnesota Experiment of semistarvation and refeeding in healthy young men, has been the undisputed source of scientific reference about the impact of long-term food deprivation on human physiology and behavior. It has been a guide in developing famine and refugee relief programs for international agencies, in exploring the effects of food deprivation on the cognitive and social functioning of those with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and in gaining insights into metabolic adaptations…

Studies which included more men, included those diagnosed with binge eating disorder, and recruited from large community samples tended to have lower sensitivity. The relationship between body mass index, binge eating disorder and suicidality.

BACKGROUND: While restrictive and compensatory eating disorders (e.g. anorexia and bulimia) are associated with elevated risk of suicide, less is known about binge eating disorder (BED). There is suggestive evidence of a U-shaped relationship between body mass index (BMI) and completed suicide, but fewer studies on suicidal ideation or attempts. This study examined the association between BED, BMI, and suicidality, and assessed whether these relationships varied by gender. METHODS: Data come from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiologic Surveys (N = 14,497). Binge episodes and BED were ass…

An investigation of objective and subjective types of binge eating episodes in a clinical sample of people with co-morbid obesity.

BACKGROUND: Objective binge eating episodes (OBEs) refer to binge eating on an unusually large amount of food and are the core symptom in current definitions of bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). Subjective binge eating episodes (SBEs) refer to eating on a small or moderate amount of food (that is perceived as large) and like OBEs are associated with loss of control (LOC). Reaching consensus on what is considered a large amount of food can however be problematic and it remains unclear if the size of a binge is an essential component for defining a binge eating episode. The a…

The needs of carers: a comparison between eating disorders and schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study compares the level of distress and the need for support between carers of patients with anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) and carers of patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: Thirty-two carers of patients suffering from AN and BN and 30 carers of patients with schizophrenia filled out the general health questionnaire (GHQ-12) and the burden inventory (BI). In addition, they were interviewed with a semi-structured research interview, the carers' needs assessment (CNA), to assess relevant problem areas as well as the need for helpful interventions. Patients with …

Prader-Willi Syndrome: Genetics and Behavior.

Since its inception, the John F. Because eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia nervosa also share features with PWS, any light that could be shed on the causes and treatment of the eating disorder in PWS could potentially have far-reaching implications for other eating disorders as well. In this article, we review …

Body image measurement in eating disorders.

The current paper reviews the methods used for assessing body image in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A major concern in the assessment of body image in the area of eating disorders has been the apparent failure to recognize the complexity of the body image construct. The development of a range of standardized measures of body image has been an important advancement in recent years; however, it would be premature to assume that any of these methods assesses body image in its entirety. Rather, each provides an operational index of one aspect of this multidimensional construct. The relati…
