OBJECTIVE: We report a missed case of otosyphilis presenting as otic capsule lucencies on temporal bone computed tomography.
METHODS: A 58-year-old woman presented with a 15-year history of bilateral, mixed hearing loss together with otic capsule lucencies, subsequently confirmed as otosyphilis. A literature review of otosyphilis was undertaken based on a PubMed search of studies published between 1988 and 2012, using the key words 'otosyphilis', 'otodystrophy', 'otic capsule lucencies' and 'luetic osteitis'.

Differentiating a pyogenic cerebral abscess from a cystic brain tumor can be a challenge when using morphological and functional imaging techniques. The prevalence of a history of shoulder complaints is higher in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) than in healthy individuals. The aims of this study were to evaluate shoulder disease in PD patients with ultrasonography (US) and to identify the relationship between the US findings of shoulder disease and the motor signs in patients with PD. Biofilm formation by the human pathogen Neisseria meningitidis was analyzed. Biofilm-forming meningococcal strains were identified and quantitated by crystal violet staining. Laser scanning confocal microscopy of the meningococcal biofilm revealed variable layers up to 90 microm in thickness. Teorema and indometacin were administered to patients with degenerative and inflammatory joint diseases and degenerative vertebral column diseases for a period of 21 days. 24 patients were included in the 3 groups distinguished by diagnostic criteria. Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding poses a diagnostic challenge for gastroenterologists, though advancements such as video capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy have led to increased detection of small bowel lymphangiomas. Lymphangiomas are benign tumors with dilated lymphatic channels that rarely affect the jejunum or ileum. We present a rare case of jejunal lymphangioma causing obscure gastrointestinal bleeding diagnosed by video capsule endoscopy, confirmed by enteroscopy, and successfully treated with surgical resection.

Three patients with intraocular foreign bodies and traumatic cataracts underwent single stage pars plana lensectomy with anterior capsule preservation, vitrectomy, removal of the foreign body, and intraocular lens implantation. The preserved anterior capsule permitted support for the placement of an intraocular lens in the posterior chamber in the ciliary sulcus. The procedure enabled early visual rehabilitation. This procedure seems useful in the management of posterior segment intraocular foreign body associated with cataract.
