Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa Strains Carrying the ctxB7 Allele Caused a Large Cholera Outbreak during 2014 in the Tribal Areas of Odisha, India.

The large outbreak of cholera reported during July to September 2014 in the Narla block of Kalahandi district, India, was investigated to determine the causative organism. Rectal swabs collected from patients with diarrhea and environmental water samples were cultured following standard techniques. The causative organism was identified as Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa biotype El Tor, and analysis by double mismatch mutation assay PCR confirmed that all strains were the ctxB7 variant of Haitian V. cholerae O1. The environmental water samples were negative for V. cholerae. The V. cholerae O1 strains

HIV, prisoners, and human rights.

Worldwide, a disproportionate burden of HIV, tuberculosis, and hepatitis is present among current and former prisoners. This problem results from laws, policies, and policing practices that unjustly and discriminatorily detain individuals and fail to ensure continuity of prevention, care, and treatment upon detention, throughout imprisonment, and upon release. These government actions, and the failure to ensure humane prison conditions, constitute violations of human rights to be free of discrimination and cruel and inhuman treatment, to due process of law, and to health. Although intervention

Controlling tungiasis in an impoverished community: an intervention study.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, tungiasis is endemic in some resource-poor communities where various domestic and sylvatic animals act as reservoirs for this zoonosis. To determine the effect of control measures on the prevalence and intensity of infestation of human and animal tungiasis, a repeated cross-sectional survey with intervention was carried out. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a traditional fishing community in Northeast Brazil, humans and reservoir animals were treated, and premise-spraying using an insecticide was done, while a second fishing community served as a control. Both communi

Children with pertussis inform the investigation of other pertussis cases among contacts.

BACKGROUND: The number of reported pertussis has increased in the last two decades. However, many cases of pertussis may be underreported or not diagnosed. The World Health Organization estimates that pertussis causes 200,000-400,000 deaths each year, most deaths are in infants and in developing countries. Infants with pertussis can indicate an undetected source cases in the community. METHODS: At a University Hospital in Brazil individuals that had frequent contacts with a child with confirmed pertussis (the index case) and had recent history of cough were enrolled into the study. The potential impact of enhanced diagnostic techniques for tuberculosis driven by HIV: a mathematical model.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the potential impact of enhanced tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic techniques as a TB control strategy in an adult population with high HIV prevalence. DESIGN: A compartmental difference-equation model of TB/HIV was developed using parameter estimates from the literature. METHODS: The impact of five TB control interventions (rapid molecular testing, mycobacterial culture, community-wide and HIV-targeted active case finding, and highly active antiretroviral therapy) on TB incidence, prevalence, and mortality was modeled in a steady-state population with an HIV prevalence of 1

Residual lung damage after completion of treatment for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.

SETTING: Limpopo Province, South Africa. OBJECTIVE: To assess the residual lung damage of patients who completed treatment for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). DESIGN: Chest radiograph and lung function tests were performed at the end of treatment. The radiographs were read by two independent observers who attributed a zonal score of between 0 and 18, depending on the extent of radiographic abnormalities (opacification or cavitation), counted the number of visible cavities and measured the diameter of the largest cavity. RESULTS: The mean zonal score was 6.5. Cavitation was presen

The newest epidemic: a review of HIV/AIDS in Central and Eastern Europe.

HIV/AIDS has emerged as a grave public health threat in Central and Eastern Europe and in the Central Asian republics over the past five years. Massive political, social, cultural, and behavioural changes - along with economic upheaval and collapse of the public health infrastructure in many countries - have created circumstances conducive to the rapid spread of HIV. This paper reviews HIV and sexually transmitted disease (STD) data for all countries in the region, as well as behavioural, social, cultural, and other HIV epidemic enabling factors. The epidemiological picture of HIV in the regio

International relations and epidemics: a short expedition to places inhabited by states and mad cows.

The complex process of co-evolution between humans, their social structures and biological disease agents have from time to time established relationships between the three. Recently, one such set of paths has opened up faster and closer global connections. As new and more inclusive approaches emerge from the shadow of strict intra-disciplinary containment, it is tempting to formulate the relationship between epidemics and international relations in new terms deriving from new metaphors. The argument that components central to international relations (state, sovereignty, power) do not associat

Survey to assess dental practitioner's knowledge of infectious disease.

The prerequisite to understanding the need for infection control practices in dentistry is a sound knowledge of infectious disease and the potential for its transmission in the dental setting. To assess the infectious disease knowledge-base of dental practitioners, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to dentists in British Columbia. The survey results showed that many of the mechanisms, routes and risks for the transmission of viral pathogens in the dental setting are not clearly understood by dentists. Continuing education is needed to ensure that compliance with current infection c

The role of health literacy in clinical, treatment, and work-related outcomes in people with inflammatory arthritis in England: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy has been deemed central to the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases by WHO, including rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. However, the association between health literacy, other social determinants of health, and outcomes in people with inflammatory arthritis remains poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the associations between health literacy, social determinants of health, and clinical, mental health, and work-related outcomes in people with inflammatory arthritis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used individual-level data from pat

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Non-communicable Diseases in an Adult Tribal Population of Kanyakumari District, India: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background The broad category of illnesses known as non-communicable diseases (NCDs) includes conditions such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and chronic respiratory disorders. It causes million deaths worldwide each year, or of all fatalities. The concerning rise in NCDs is thought to be caused by the increasing prevalence of anthropometric and behavioural risk factors for these lifestyle diseases. Due to poor diet, greater exposure to harmful addictions such as tobacco, and lack of access to healthcare services, NCD rates are steadily rising among India's marginalised people (tribal). In

Decades of discovery: unveiling emerging trends, pivotal research areas, and landmark publications in national tobacco research in India.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use remains a major public health concern in India, contributing significantly to the burden of non-communicable diseases and premature mortality. Over the past two decades, national tobacco research has evolved in response to shifting regulatory frameworks, scientific developments, and increasing awareness of tobacco's health, social, and environmental implications. The World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), adopted in 2003, has played a catalytic role in aligning research efforts with global priorities. However, there is a need to

Managing Obesity in Lockdown: Survey of Health Behaviors and Telemedicine.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, billions of people have gone into lockdown, facing pandemic related challenges that engender weight gain, especially in the obese. We report the results of an online survey, conducted during Israel's first quarantine, of 279 adults treated in hospital-based obesity clinics with counseling, medications, surgery, endoscopic procedures, or any combination of these for weight loss. In this study, we assessed the association between changes in dietary and lifestyle habits and body weight, and the benefits of receiving weight management care remotely through telemedic
