Temporal bone fractures.

High-resolution technique is essential to the evolution of temporal bone fractures. Axial and coronal scan planes are optimal but may not be possible in acutely traumatized patients. A knowledge of normal temporal bone anatomy is important and can be obtained from standard texts, so it will not be considered in detail in this article. Classically, petrous temporal bone fractures have been classified as longitudinal, transverse, or mixed. Recent publications have emphasized the importance of describing fractures in terms of planes rather than lines. According to this concept, most temporal bone

Traumatic stapediovestibular luxation: two contrasting cases highlighting the importance of early treatment decision: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Traumatic stapediovestibular luxation is a rare but potentially devastating condition that may cause severe vertigo and hearing loss. Optimal management remains controversial because surgical manipulation around the stapes carries the risk of additional inner ear damage, whereas some patients recover with conservative treatment alone. PATIENT CONCERNS: Two patients presented with vertigo and hearing impairment after accidental penetrating ear trauma caused by cotton swabs. DIAGNOSES: High-resolution computed tomography demonstrated stapes footplate invagination into the vestibule

Lrig3-deficient mice exhibit strain-specific alterations in liver fat accumulation, intestinal morphology, and middle ear inflammation.

The transmembrane protein leucine-rich repeats and immunoglobulin-like domains 3 (LRIG3) regulates fat metabolism and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling. Lrig3-deficient mice exhibit impaired development of the snout and the inner ear lateral canal, neural defects, and cardiac hypertrophy in adulthood. However, no thorough and unbiased analysis of the physiological functions of Lrig3 has previously been performed. To address this knowledge gap, we performed histopathological examination of 42 tissues and organs from 1-year-old female C57BL/6JBomTac and 129S1-U mice with different Lrig3

Contralateral Hearing Loss in Temporal Bone Fractures: A Potential Association with Combined Intracranial Injury.

Temporal bone (TB) fractures are frequently accompanied by intracranial injury. This study aimed to analyze combined intracranial injuries in relation to functional changes in the inner ear, including those of the contralateral ear, in patients with TB fractures. Ninety-four patients (mean age: 35.6 ± 18.7 years, M : F=67 : 27) diagnosed with unilateral TB fracture were included. Bone conduction (BC) threshold, word recognition score (WRS), and changes in vestibular function were compared based on intracranial injuries, focusing on the contralateral side. Various types of intracranial injuries

Protective Mechanisms of Avocado Oil Extract Against Ototoxicity.

Despite the excellent antimicrobial activity of aminoglycoside antibiotics, permanent inner ear damage associated with the use of these drugs has resulted in the need to develop strategies to address the ototoxic risk given their widespread use. In a previous study, we showed that avocado oil protects ear hair cells from damage caused by neomycin. However, the detailed mechanism by which this protection occurs is still unclear. Here, we investigated the auditory cell-protective mechanism of enhanced functional avocado oil extract (DKB122). RNA sequencing followed by pathway analysis revealed t

Hearing disorders in cats.

Practical relevance: Auditory function is a sense that is central to life for cats - being important in situational awareness of potential predators, pursuit of prey, and for communication with conspecifics, humans and other species. Deafness in cats is most frequently the result of a genetic disorder, strongly associated with white fur and blue eyes, but may also result from acquired causes such as advancing age, ototoxic drugs, infection, environmental noise and physical trauma. Deafness can be sensorineural, where there is loss of cochlear hair cells, or conductive, where sound is muffled o

Combined transmastoid/middle fossa approach for intracranial extension of middle ear cholesteatoma.

A retrospective review was performed of patients treated for middle ear cholesteatoma with bone defects of the skull base via a combined transmastoid/middle fossa approach at the University of Tsukuba Hospital from 2006 through 2011 to determine the safety and effectiveness of a combined transmastoid/middle fossa approach for the treatment of cholesteatoma involving the middle cranial fossa. The bone defects of the skull base were reconstructed with a galeal flap pedicled with a parietal branch of the superficial temporal artery and an autologous bone flap. The clinical and radiological data w

Cochlear conductive hearing loss in patients with Meniere's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Physiological studies with experimental models of endolymphatic hydrops in Meniere's disease demonstrate some pressure changes at the level of round and oval window. Interestingly, conductive type hearing loss was observed in some patients during Meniere episodes. A close auditory follow-up of these patients may provide a better understanding of hydrodynamic changes of the hydrops and micromechanics of the inner ear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty-four patients (mean age 34.3 years; range 17 to 77 years) with Meniere's disease were enrolled in the study. Duration of Meniere symptoms

[Manifestations of primary vasculitis in the ENT region].

The primary ANCA associated vasculitides, Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), Churg Strauss syndrome (CSS) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), frequently affect the ENT region. For several reasons WG is of special significance for the otorhinolaryngologist. First, disease activity limited to the upper respiratory tract (localized WG) often proceeds the systemic vasculitis (generalized WG). The early diagnosis therefore has decisive consequences for stage adapted therapy. Second, in most cases (nearly 80%) WG is diagnosed histologically on biopsy specimens from the ENT region. During the initial pha

New evidence from Le Moustier 1: computer-assisted reconstruction and morphometry of the skull.

In this study, we present a new computerized reconstruction of the Le Moustier 1 Neanderthal skull and discuss its significance for Neanderthal growth and variability. Because of the precarious state of preservation of the original material, we applied entirely noninvasive methods of fossil reconstruction and morphometry, using a combination of computed tomography, computer graphics, and stereolithography. After electronic restoration, the isolated original pieces were recomposed on the computer screen using external and internal anatomical clues to position the bone fragments and mirror image

Time course of nerve-fiber regeneration in the noise-damaged mammalian cochlea.

The time course of events which are essential for nerve-fiber regeneration in the mammalian cochlea was determined using a group of chinchillas that had been exposed for 3.5 hr to an octave band of noise with a center frequency of 4 kHz and a sound pressure level of 108 dB. The animals recovered from 40 min (0 days) to 100 days at which times their inner ears were fixed and the organs of Corti prepared for phase-contrast and bright-field microscopy as plastic-embedded flat preparations. Selected areas identified in the flat preparations were semi-thick and thin sectioned at radial or tangentia

Contrast Agent Uptake in Endolymphatic Sac and Duct: Inverse Relation to Endolymphatic Hydrops.

OBJECTIVES: Ménière's disease (MD) and vestibular migraine (VM) can be associated with endolymphatic hydrops (ELH). The differential role of the endolymphatic sac and duct (ES/ED) system for the development of ELH is poorly understood. METHODS: On 251 delayed, contrast-enhanced inner ear MRI (iMRI) datasets from neurotological patients and healthy control participants, we evaluated (1) the visibility of the ES/ED system using a novel semi-quantitative scale, and (2) the dimensions of ELH, calculated using volumetric local thresholding (VOLT). Afterwards, statistical analysis of ES/ED radiolog

A review on the impacts of COVID-19 on the auditory system: Implications for public health promotion research.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there are few studies on the relationship between COVID-19 and the auditory system. In the current study, a review of the studies conducted in the fields of etiopathology, clinical manifestations, research, and treatment of hearing loss caused byCOVID-19 was conducted, which can be used as a baseline for future studies. METHODS: We utilized the research approach suggested by Arksey and O'Malley to carry out this scoping review. Search was conducted in Farsi and English with a focus on the onset of hearing loss in patients with COVID-19 through Medline and PubMed, and Go

The cochlea of the Sima de los Huesos hominins (Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain): New insights into cochlear evolution in the genus Homo.

The cochlea contains taxonomic and phylogenetic information and its morphology is related with hearing abilities among fossil hominins. Data for the genus Homo is presently limited to early Homo and the early Neandertals from Krapina. The present study of the middle Pleistocene hominins from the Sima de los Huesos (SH) provides new evidence on cochlear evolution in the genus Homo. We compared the absolute length, proportional lengths of each turn, number of turns, size and shape of the cross-section of the basal turn, volume, curvature gradient, and thickness of the cochlea between extant Pan

Cochlear isolation in neonatal mice for in vitro and ex vivo models: an anatomical landmark-based protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Ex vivo and in vitro models utilizing inner ear tissue from neonatal rodents are vital for developing treatments for hearing loss caused by damage to hair cells or auditory neurons. The cochlear isolation from the skull is associated with a high risk of mechanical damage to the soft tissues enclosed in the otic capsule. Such damage may result in artifactual hair cell loss and morphological alterations of SGNs. This stage of cochlear dissection requires more detailed description. To overcome technical difficulties, we described a protocol based on the use of key anatomic lines of

A Stress-Neuroendocrine-Myeloid Inflammation Axis Is Associated with the Progression of Ménière's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Ménière disease (MD) is a chronic inner ear disorder of unknown etiology. Although an immune-inflammatory link is suspected, the upstream triggers and cellular mechanisms connecting psychosocial stress to inner ear pathology remain poorly defined. This study aimed to investigate the role of stress-related, myeloid cell-derived inflammation in the progression of MD. METHODS: This multi-cohort study involved 384 MD patients (62.5% female); and 138 healthy controls (HCs) (46.4% female). Perceived stress was evaluated in 110 MD patients and 65 HCs. Transcriptional profiles were charac

Antigenicity evaluation of lac color and exploratory study for identifying potential biomarkers of anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Lac color, a natural red dye derived from the larvae of laccifer lacca kerr, is one of the most commonly used substances in food. To date, no studies have reported on the antigenicity of lac color and the other biomarkers that can determine anaphylactic reactions. To address this, we evaluated the antigenicity of lac color through active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA) in addition to identifying potential biomarkers performing exploratory studies. For ASA test, Guinea pigs (n = 5) were sensitized with 0(negative control), 4 mg/kg of lac color, 4 mg/kg of lac color + FCA, and 5 mg/kg of
