Combining multiple feature representations and AdaBoost ensemble learning for reducing false-positive detections in computer-aided detection of masses on mammograms.

One of the drawbacks of current Computer-aided Detection (CADe) systems is a high number of false-positive (FP) detections, especially for detecting mass abnormalities. In a typical CADe system, classifier design is one of the key steps for determining FP detection rates. This paper presents the effective classifier ensemble system for tackling FP reduction problem in CADe. To construct ensemble consisting of correct classifiers while disagreeing with each other as much as possible, we develop a new ensemble construction solution that combines data resampling underpinning AdaBoost learning wit

Utility of time-resolved three-dimensional magnetic resonance digital subtraction angiography without contrast material for assessment of intracranial dural arterio-venous fistula.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is an arteriovenous shunting disease of the dura. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is expected to be a safer alternative method in evaluation of DAVF, compared with invasive intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography (IADSA). PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic use of time-spatial labeling inversion pulse (Time-SLIP) three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance digital subtraction angiography (MRDSA) without contrast material in six patients with DAVF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Images for 3D time-of-flight MRA, which has been a val

Correlation between computer-aided dynamic gadolinium-enhanced MRI assessment of inflammation and semi-quantitative synovitis and bone marrow oedema scores of the wrist in patients with rheumatoid arthritis--a cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To test the correlation between assessment of inflammation using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) analysed by a novel computer-aided approach and semi-quantitative scores of synovitis and bone marrow oedema (BME) using the OMERACT-RA MRI Scoring (RAMRIS) system, in the wrist of patients with RA. METHODS: Fifty-four RA patients had conventional and DCE-MRI of a symptomatic wrist using a low-field 0.2T extremity scanner. RAMRIS synovitis and BME of the wrist joint were done. DCE-MRI data were analysed in three ways: (i) in all images (fully automated approach), (ii) within a l

Alterations in functional activation in euthymic bipolar disorder and schizophrenia during a working memory task.

Dysfunctions in prefrontal cortical networks are thought to underlie working memory (WM) impairments consistently observed in both subjects with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It remains unclear, however, whether patterns of WM-related hemodynamic responses are similar in bipolar and schizophrenia subjects compared to controls. We used fMRI to investigate differences in blood oxygen level dependent activation during a WM task in 21 patients with euthymic bipolar I, 20 patients with schizophrenia, and 38 healthy controls. Subjects were presented with four stimuli (abstract designs) followe

The anatomy of extended limbic pathways in Asperger syndrome: a preliminary diffusion tensor imaging tractography study.

It has been suggested that people with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) have altered development (and connectivity) of limbic circuits. However, direct evidence of anatomical differences specific to white matter pathways underlying social behaviour and emotions in ASD is lacking. We used Diffusion Tensor Imaging Tractography to compare, in vivo, the microstructural integrity and age-related differences in the extended limbic pathways between subjects with Asperger syndrome and healthy controls. Twenty-four males with Asperger syndrome (mean age 23+/-12 years, age range: 9-54 years) and 42 age-

Acute toxic leukoencephalopathy: potential for reversibility clinically and on MRI with diffusion-weighted and FLAIR imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Toxic leukoencephalopathy may present acutely or subacutely with symmetrically reduced diffusion in the periventricular and supraventricular white matter, hereafter referred to as periventricular white matter. This entity may reverse both on imaging and clinically. However, a gathering together of the heterogeneous causes of this disorder as seen on MRI with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and an analysis of their likelihood to reverse has not yet been performed. Our goals were to gather causes of acute or subacute toxic leukoencephalopathy that can present with reduced diffusion o

Combination of a mean transit time measurement with an acetazolamide test increases predictive power to identify elevated oxygen extraction fraction in occlusive carotid artery diseases.

UNLABELLED: Reduced cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular reactivity to acetazolamide have been used as predictors for subsequent ischemic stroke in patients with occlusive carotid artery diseases, called type 3 ischemia. However, recent studies have shown that reduced cerebrovascular reactivity to acetazolamide does not always represent elevated oxygen extraction fraction (OEF). The aim of this study was to establish the methodology to improve the validity of an acetazolamide test identifying elevated OEF. METHODS: This study included 65 patients who developed transient ischemic attack or

Multiple template-based fluoroscopic tracking of lung tumor mass without implanted fiducial markers.

Precise lung tumor localization in real time is particularly important for some motion management techniques, such as respiratory gating or beam tracking with a dynamic multi-leaf collimator, due to the reduced clinical tumor volume (CTV) to planning target volume (PTV) margin and/or the escalated dose. There might be large uncertainties in deriving tumor position from external respiratory surrogates. While tracking implanted fiducial markers has sufficient accuracy, this procedure may not be widely accepted due to the risk of pneumothorax. Previously, we have developed a technique to generate

Factors influencing the accuracy of biomechanical breast models.

Recently it has been suggested that finite element methods could be used to predict breast deformations in a number of applications, including comparison of multimodality images, validation of image registration and image guided interventions. Unfortunately knowledge of the mechanical properties of breast tissues is limited. This study evaluated the accuracy with which biomechanical breast models based on finite element methods can predict the displacements of tissue within the breast in the practical clinical situation where the boundaries of the organ might be known reasonably accurately but

[3D motion adapted gating: a new navigator technique to shorten the acquisition time for coronary MRA].

PURPOSE: A major problem of free breathing coronary MR angiography (MRA) with respiratory navigator gating is low navigator efficiency and prolonged scan time due to irregular breathing patterns. 3D motion adapted gating (MAG) is a new adaptive navigator technique, which adapts in real time to changes of the end-expiratory position of diaphragm. This study evaluates the influence of 3D MAG on coronary MRA. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In 3D MAG, two additional gating windows are grouped around the conventional window. Additionally, each gating window is divided into three bands assigned to differen

Whole-brain voxel-based statistical analysis of gray matter and white matter in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Volumetric MRI studies based on manual labeling of selected anatomical structures have provided in vivo evidence that brain abnormalities associated with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) extend beyond the hippocampus. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) is a fully automated image analysis technique allowing identification of regional differences in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) between groups of subjects without a prior region of interest. The purpose of this study was to determine whole-brain GM and WM changes in TLE and to investigate the relationship between these abnormalities and clinical

Brain processing of visual sexual stimuli in healthy men: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

The brain plays a central role in sexual motivation. To identify cerebral areas whose activation was correlated with sexual desire, eight healthy male volunteers were studied with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Visual stimuli were sexually stimulating photographs (S condition) and emotionally neutral photographs (N condition). Subjective responses pertaining to sexual desire were recorded after each condition. To image the entire brain, separate runs focused on the upper and the lower parts of the brain. Statistical Parametric Mapping was used for data analysis. Subjective ratin

Measuring tortuosity of the intracerebral vasculature from MRA images.

The clinical recognition of abnormal vascular tortuosity, or excessive bending, twisting, and winding, is important to the diagnosis of many diseases. Automated detection and quantitation of abnormal vascular tortuosity from three-dimensional (3-D) medical image data would, therefore, be of value. However, previous research has centered primarily upon two-dimensional (2-D) analysis of the special subset of vessels whose paths are normally close to straight. This report provides the first 3-D tortuosity analysis of clusters of vessels within the normally tortuous intracerebral circulation. We d
