An aspect of our work with quinoxaline 1,4-dioxides involved the synthesis and reactivity of (quinoxalin-2-yl)acrylonitrile 1,4-dioxide. We have found that treatment of a methanolic solution of this unsaturated nitrile (cis or trans) with primary alkylamines affords a novel series of pyrido[2,3-b]quinoxaline 5-oxides. These tricyclic pyridoquinoxalines represent a unique class of agents with oral activity against trichomoniasis.

A strategy for the direct synthesis of α-methylated arylacetamides from arylacetonitriles via a cascade α-methylation with methanol and the selective hydration with an aldoxime as a water source was proposed and accomplished. In the presence of [Cp*Ir(6,6'-(OH)2dpa)Cl][Cl], desirable products were obtained in high yields. Furthermore, mechanistic experiments, DFT calculations, the practical application of this strategy, and the expansion of this catalytic system to other alcohols are also presented.

A very mild and efficient procedure has been developed for the preparation of N-methylated uridine, pseudouridine, guanosine and inosine derivatives. This process was compatible with free hydroxyls within the ribose and did not require precautions on the protection or deprotection of other functionalities. The key to this extremely mild methylation without protection relied on the in situ generated methyl oxonium from the Wittig reagent and methanol. A putative mechanism for the selective methylation was also proposed.

A practical method to synthesize N-heteroaryl esters from N-heteroaryl methanols with acyl cyanides via C-C bond cleavage without using any transition metal is demonstrated here. The use of Na2CO3/15-crown-5 couple enables access to a series of N-heteroaryl esters in high efficiency. This protocol is operationally simple and highly environmentally benign producing only cyanides as byproducts.

A rapid method for the extraction and estimation of morphine in Indian opium is described. Methanolic extract of opium is treated with activated charcoal and the colorless extract obtained contains all of the major opium alkaloids. Morphine content is estimated colorimetrically by using hydrogen peroxide-copper-ammonia. The reaction is specific for morphine, and no other major opium alkaloid responds. The results obtained by the proposed method are in general agreement with those obtained by the nitroso method.

In this work, we report the evaluation of a (CuO/WO3)-CuWO4 heterostructured system as a methanol and acetone gas sensor in different configurations, contrasted with the pure oxides CuO and WO3.
