Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is an emergent zoonotic agent associated with multidrug resistance (MDR). This work aimed to describe the antibacterial activity of four essential oils (EOs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against 15 S. pseudintermedius strains isolated from pyoderma. The four EOs, namely Rosmarinus officinalis (RO), Juniperus communis (GI), Citrus sinensis (AR), and Abies alba (AB), and AgNPs were used alone and in combination to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). All strains were MDR and methicillin-resistant. A

BACKGROUND: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhoea. There are no vaccines and infections are treated principally with antibiotics. However, gonococci rapidly develop resistance to every antibiotic class used and there is a need for developing new antimicrobial treatments. In this study we focused on two gonococcal enzymes as potential antimicrobial targets, namely the serine protease L,D-carboxypeptidase LdcA (NgO1274/NEIS1546) and the lytic transglycosylase LtgD (NgO0626/NEIS1212). To identify compounds that could interact with these enzymes as potential

Natural polymers have recently been investigated for various applications, such as 3D printing and healthcare, including treating infections. Among microbial infections, fungal diseases remain overlooked, with limited therapeutic options and high recurrence. Cutaneous cryptococcosis is an opportunistic fungal infection triggered by mechanical inoculation or hematogenous dissemination of the yeast that causes cryptococcal pneumonia and meningitis. Every year, Cryptococcus neoformans endanger the lives of immunosuppressed hosts, resulting in 180,000 deaths per year. Nonetheless, healthy individu

The drugs available to treat sporotrichosis, an important yet neglected fungal infection, are limited. Some Sporothrix spp. strains present reduced susceptibility to these antifungals. Furthermore, some patients may not be indicated to use these drugs, while others may not respond to the therapy. The anthelmintic drug niclosamide is fungicidal against the Sporothrix brasiliensis type strain. This study aimed to evaluate whether niclosamide also has antifungal activity against Sporothrix globosa, Sporothrix schenckii and other S. brasiliensis strains with distinct genotypes and antifungal susce

Numbers of infections with Neisseria gonorrhoeae are among the top three sexually transmitted infections (STI) worldwide. In addition, the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Neisseria gonorrhoeae pose an important public-health issue. The integration of genomic, phenotypic and epidemiological data to monitor Neisseria gonorrhoeae fosters our understanding of the emergence and spread of AMR in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and helps to inform therapy guidelines and intervention strategies. Thus, the Gonococcal resistance surveillance (Go-Surv-AMR) was implemented at the Robert Ko

Nocardia is an emerging bacterial disease that often affects patients with compromised immune systems. As the number of patients undergoing solid organ transplants continues to rise, and as more cancer survivors are treated with long-term immune-modifying agents, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressive medications, organisms that typically pose no harm are becoming a public health concern. Carbapenems are usually a second-line therapy in the setting of Nocardia infections. We present the case of a patient who had an immunocompromised status and was diagnosed with Nocardia farcinica, which showe

Mycobacteria are opportunistic intracellular pathogens that have plagued humans and other animals throughout history and still are today. They manipulate and hijack phagocytic cells of immune systems, enabling them to occupy this peculiar infection niche. Mycobacteria exploit a plethora of mechanisms to resist antimicrobials (e. g., waxy cell walls, efflux pumps, target modification, biofilms, etc.) thereby evolving into superbugs, such as extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR TB) bacilli and the emerging pathogenic Mycobacterium abscessus complex. This review summarizes the mechanisms

The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) poses a significant threat to health globally. During searching for new chemical entities regulating MDR- and XDR-Mtb, chemical investigation of the black oil beetle gut bacterium Micromonospora sp. GR10 led to the discovery of eight new members of arenicolides along with the identification of arenicolide A (Ar-A, 1), which was a previously reported macrolide with incomplete configuration. Genomic analysis of the bacterial strain GR10 revealed their putative biosynthetic

AIMS: Salmonella Typhi biofilm-mediated infections are globally rising. Due to the emergence of drug resistance antibiotics did not show effective results against S. Typhi biofilm. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an in-depth interrogation of S. Typhi biofilm to understand its formation kinetics, compositions, and surface charge value.
METHODS: This study utilized the S. Typhi MTCC-733 strain from a microbial-type culture collection in India. The S. Typhi biofilm was formed on a glass slide in a biofilm development apparatus. Typhoidal biofilm analysis was done with the help of various

Biofilm-mediated Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (Salmonella Ser. Typhi) infections are a growing global health issue due to the formation of antibiotic resistance. The study aimed to discover some of the druggable target proteins of Salmonella Ser. Typhi biofilm and antibiofilm enzyme to prevent Salmonella Ser. Typhi biofilm-mediated infection. Enzymatic therapy has demonstrated effective therapeutic results against bacterial infections due to its specificity and high binding capacity to the target. Therefore, this study focused on the computational interaction between the cellulase enzyme

Shigella stands as a major contributor to bacterial dysentery worldwide scale, particularly in developing countries with inadequate sanitation and hygiene. The emergence of multidrug-resistant strains exacerbates the challenge of treating Shigella infections, particularly in regions where access to healthcare and alternative antibiotics is limited. Therefore, investigations on how bacteria evade antibiotics and eventually develop resistance could open new avenues for research to develop novel therapeutics. The aim of this study was to analyze whole genome sequence (WGS) of human pathogenic Shi

Essential oils of Mentha piperita, Punica granatum, Thymus vulgaris and Citrus limon in olive oil as a carrier were mixed with biopolymer chitosan to prepare nanoemulsions. The formulations were prepared using the following ratios: 0.5:0.5:4, 1:1:4, and 2:3:4 of chitosan: essential oil: olive oil, respectively, representing 12 formulations based on four essential oils. Based on the characterization of nanoemulsions, M. piperita, T. vulgaris, and C. limon oils produced the smallest droplets. However, P. granatum oil produced high droplets size. The products were evaluated in vitro for antimicro

Pseudomonas aeruginosa infects the lungs of patients with cystic fibrosis. Sputum expectorated from the lungs of patients contains low levels of oxygen, indicating that P. aeruginosa may be oxygen-deprived during infection. During in vitro growth under oxygen-limiting conditions, a P. aeruginosa reference strain increases expression of a cytochrome oxidase with a high affinity for oxygen, and of nitrate and nitrite reductases that enable it to use nitrate instead of oxygen during respiration. Here, we quantified transcription of the genes encoding these three enzymes in sputum samples from 18

Candida haemulonii is an emergent infectious pathogen that affects human presenting comorbidities and/or immunodepression. Little is known about other possible hosts. For the first time, this fungus was found causing a cutaneous infection in a snake, Boa constrictor, characterized by scale opacity and several ulcerative lesions. This C. haemulonii was isolated, identified using molecular techniques and a phylogenetic study, and had its growth totally inhibited by all the drugs tested; however, no fungicide effect was seen for fluconazole and itraconazole. The B. constrictor clinical signals su

Candida auris, the youngest Candida species, is known to cause candidiasis and candidemia in humans and has been related to several hospital outbreaks. Moreover, Candida auris infections are largely resistant to the antifungal drugs currently in clinical use, necessitating the development of novel medications and approaches to treat such infections. Following up on our previous studies that demonstrated eugenol tosylate congeners (ETCs) to have antifungal activity, several ETCs (C1-C6) were synthesized to find a lead molecule with the requisite antifungal activity against C. auris. Preliminary
