NREM-related parasomnias in Machado-Joseph disease: clinical and polysomnographic evaluation.

Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) are autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorders that affect the cerebellum and its connections, and have a marked clinical and genetic variability. Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) or spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3)--MJD/SCA3--is the most common SCA worldwide. MJD/SCA3 is characterized classically by progressive ataxia and variable other motor and non-motor symptoms. Sleep disorders are common, and include rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD), restless legs syndrome (RLS), insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, excessive fragmentary myoclon

Normal sensorimotor plasticity in complex regional pain syndrome with fixed posture of the hand.

BACKGROUND: Movement disorders associated with complex regional pain syndrome type I have been a subject of controversy over the last 10 years regarding their nature and pathophysiology, with an intense debate about the functional (psychogenic) nature of this disorder. The aim of this study was to test sensorimotor plasticity and cortical excitability in patients with complex regional pain syndrome type I who developed a fixed posture of the hand. METHODS: Ten patients with complex regional pain syndrome type I in the right upper limb and a fixed posture of the hand (disease duration less tha…

[Tics and Tourette syndrome in literature, cinema and television].

INTRODUCTION: Different neurological diseases have often been portrayed in literature, cinema and television. Tics and Tourette syndrome, for example, are commonly represented from different perspectives, which are sometimes very realistic but in some cases are used for more dramatic purposes or to make a character look ridiculous. One of the main effects of these inadequate views is to further stigmatise those who suffer these movement disorders. AIMS: To review the way tics and Tourette syndrome have been portrayed in certain literary works, films and television. DEVELOPMENT: Tics are rapi…

Motor stereotypies in children with autism and other developmental disorders.

The purpose of the study was to count and characterize the range of stereotypies--repetitive rhythmical, apparently purposeless movements--i … rs and objects was rare but virtually limited to autism. Stereotypies are environmentally modulated movement disorders, some highly suggestive, but not pathognomonic, of autism. Their underlying brain basis and genetic correlates need investigation.

An ultrastructural study of granule cell/Purkinje cell synapses in tottering (tg/tg), leaner (tg(la)/tg(la)) and compound heterozygous tottering/leaner (tg/tg(la)) mice.

Homozygous tottering (tg/tg) and compound heterozygous tottering/leaner (tg/tg(la)) mutant mice exhibit juvenile onset of three abnormal neurological phenotypes: (i) petit mal-like epilepsy; (ii) ataxia; and (iii) an intermittent myoclonus-like movement disorder. Homozygous leaner mice (tg(la)/tg(la)) exhibit early onset of ataxia (postnatal days 10-12), and also exhibit the myoclonus-like movement disorder and evidence of absence seizure activity; the myoclonus-like disorder is most evident in the first month of life, then diminishes in severity and frequency. The ultrastructure of the cerebe

Polysomnographic characteristics of patients with Rett syndrome.

During wakefulness, patients with Rett syndrome have disordered breathing. To understand further this ventilatory control disorder, we performed polysomnography in 30 patients with Rett syndrome and 30 control subjects (female subjects with primary snoring). The median age was 7 years (range, 1 to 32 years) for Rett syndrome and 6 years (range, 1 to 17 years) for control subjects. During periods of wakefulness, 67% of patients with Rett syndrome had the characteristic pattern of disordered breathing (i.e., episodes of hyperventilation followed by central apnea and desaturation). No such events

Features of eye movements during rapid automatized naming in Chinese children aged 7-11 years.

Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) tests have been well-documented to predict reading abilities as well as a variety of neurobiological disorders (e.g., developmental dyslexia). Traditional measures of RAN tests only take into account the naming time and accuracy and cannot reflect temporal-spatial features during RAN tests. Although the eye tracking approach appears to be a promising tool for characterizing the essential temporal-spatial characteristics of RAN tests, no research has been conducted to investigate whether and how gender, age, and task-type alter those characteristics. Additionally,

Alzheimer's disease and sleep disorders: A bidirectional relationship.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent dementia, pathologically featuring abnormal accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau, while sleep, divided into rapid eye movement sleep (REM) and nonrapid eye movement sleep (NREM), plays a key role in consolidating social and spatial memory. Emerging evidence has revealed that sleep disorders such as circadian disturbances and disruption of neuronal rhythm activity are considered as both candidate risks and consequence of AD, suggesting a bidirectional relationship between sleep and AD. This review will firstly grasp basic know

Consolidating the Role of Mutated ATP2B2 in Neurodevelopmental and Cerebellar Pathologies.

Plasma membrane calcium ATPases (PMCAs) encoded by ATP2B genes have been implicated in Mendelian diseases with ataxia, dystonia, and intellectual disability. Work to date has shown that ATP2B2 (encoding PMCA2) is required for synaptic function and Purkinje-cell integrity in the cerebellum. A recent case series has linked ATP2B2 to a novel entity, characterized by neurodevelopmental and movement phenotypes, in only seven individuals. We called for collaboration to collect five unpublished families affected by the new rare ATP2B2-related condition. Exome-/genome sequencing-identified genotypes i

The emerging functions of intraflagellar transport 52 in ciliary transport and ciliopathies.

Ciliary transport in eukaryotic cells is an intricate and conserved process involving the coordinated assembly and functioning of a multiprotein intraflagellar transport (IFT) complex. Among the various IFT proteins, intraflagellar transport 52 (IFT52) plays a crucial role in ciliary transport and is implicated in various ciliopathies. IFT52 is a core component of the IFT-B complex that facilitates movement of cargoes along the ciliary axoneme. Stable binding of the IFT-B1 and IFT-B2 subcomplexes by IFT52 in the IFT-B complex regulates recycling of ciliary components and maintenance of ciliary
