Modeling the impact of cochlear nerve degeneration on speech recognition performance.

Cochlear nerve degeneration (CND), including the loss of synapses between inner hair cells and auditory nerve fibers (ANFs), has emerged as a likely contributor to "hidden hearing loss", a condition in which listeners experience speech-in-noise difficulties that cannot be fully explained by audiometric thresholds. This form of primary neural de-afferentation preferentially affects low- and medium-spontaneous rate (SR) fibers, which are critical for encoding acoustic features such as amplitude modulations, especially under challenging listening conditions such as noisy backgrounds. Although CND

The additive impact of the distal ureteral diameter ratio in predicting early breakthrough urinary tract infections in children with vesicoureteral reflux.

INTRODUCTION: Many factors influence patient and provider decisions to surgically correct vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), including risk of breakthrough febrile urinary tract infections and likelihood of spontaneous resolution. Ureteral diameter ratio has been shown in several studies to be more predictive than reflux grade with regard to breakthrough urinary tract infection (UTI). We developed and investigated the accuracy of a computational model for predicating febrile breakthrough urinary tract infection within 13 months of starting prophylactic antibiotics in children with VUR. OBJECTIVE: T

Axon and Myelin Sheath Segmentation in Electron Microscopy Images using Meta Learning.

Various neurological diseases affect the morphology of myelinated axons. Quantitative analysis of these structures and changes occurring due to neurodegeneration or neuroregeneration is of great importance for characterization of disease state and treatment response. This paper proposes a robust, meta-learning based pipeline for segmentation of axons and surrounding myelin sheaths in electron microscopy images. This is the first step towards computation of electron microscopy related bio-markers of hypoglossal nerve degeneration/regeneration. This segmentation task is challenging due to large

Cone-beam computed tomography-based deep learning-augmented model for screening sleep-disordered breathing risk.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a common but underdiagnosed disorder due to complex diagnostic procedures, posing a substantial global health burden. Craniofacial anatomy, such as mandibular retrusion and upper airway narrowing, plays a prominent role in SDB among Asian populations, underscoring the potential role of orthodontists in SDB risk screening. This study aimed to develop a deep learning-augmented, cone-beam computed tomography-based model for SDB risk screening in adults. METHODS: A training cohort included 110 patients with SDB and 110 sex-matched nonsnoring contr

A data-driven approach for real-time soft tissue deformation prediction using nonlinear presurgical simulations.

A method that allows a fast and accurate registration of digital tissue models obtained during preoperative, diagnostic imaging with those captured intraoperatively using lower-fidelity ultrasound imaging techniques is presented. Minimally invasive surgeries are often planned using preoperative, high-fidelity medical imaging techniques such as MRI and CT imaging. While these techniques allow clinicians to obtain detailed 3D models of the surgical region of interest (ROI), various factors such as physical changes to the tissue, changes in the body's configuration, or apparatus used during the s

Breast Cancer Detection and Prevention Using Machine Learning.

Breast cancer is a common cause of female mortality in developing countries. Early detection and treatment are crucial for successful outcomes. Breast cancer develops from breast cells and is considered a leading cause of death in women. This disease is classified into two subtypes: invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). The advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques have made it possible to develop more accurate and reliable models for diagnosing and treating this disease. From the literature, it is evident that the incorpor

Numerical and physical modeling of breast cancer based on image fusion and artificial intelligence.

PURPOSE: The key problem raised in the paper is the change in the position of the breast tumor due to magnetic resonance imaging examinations in the abdominal position relative to the supine position during the surgical procedure. Changing the position of the patient leads to significant deformation of the breast, which leads to the inability to indicate the location of the neoplastic lesion correctly. METHODS: This study outlines a methodological process for treating cancer patients. Pre-qualification assessments are conducted for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and 3D scans are taken in t

A Computer-Aided Heart Valve Disease Diagnosis System Based on Machine Learning.

Cardiac auscultation is a noninvasive, convenient, and low-cost diagnostic method for heart valvular disease, and it can diagnose the abnormality of the heart valve at an early stage. However, the accuracy of auscultation relies on the professionalism of cardiologists. Doctors in remote areas may lack the experience to diagnose correctly. Therefore, it is necessary to design a system to assist with the diagnosis. This study proposed a computer-aided heart valve disease diagnosis system, including a heart sound acquisition module, a trained model for diagnosis, and software, which can diagnose

Reduced brain entropy in migraine with partial restoration during attacks: A resting-state fMRI study.

Migraine is a prevalent and disabling neurological disorder, characterized by impaired regulation of migraine burden, sensory processing, and cognitive-emotional states. Brain entropy quantifies the complexity of neural dynamics, where reduced entropy may reflect diminished neural adaptability, but its assessment with fMRI in migraine remains limited. Here, we examined alterations in brain entropy and their associations with clinical burden, migraine phase, and symptomatology. Resting-state fMRI data were acquired from adults with episodic migraine, chronic migraine, and healthy controls. Foll

Dynamic brain states during encoding and their post-encoding reinstatement predicts episodic memory in children.

Episodic memory, the ability to rapidly learn and explicitly remember past events and experiences, plays a critical role in children's academic learning and knowledge acquisition. The formation of lasting memories relies on the brain's ability to dynamically organize its activity. How these neural configurations unfold moment-by-moment across encoding and offline phases remains poorly understood. To probe these dynamics, we applied a novel Bayesian Switching Dynamic Systems approach, a hidden Markov model with automatic state detection, to fMRI data from children performing scene encoding foll

A closed-loop model of the respiratory system: focus on hypercapnia and active expiration.

Breathing is a vital process providing the exchange of gases between the lungs and atmosphere. During quiet breathing, pumping air from the lungs is mostly performed by contraction of the diaphragm during inspiration, and muscle contraction during expiration does not play a significant role in ventilation. In contrast, during intense exercise or severe hypercapnia forced or active expiration occurs in which the abdominal "expiratory" muscles become actively involved in breathing. The mechanisms of this transition remain unknown. To study these mechanisms, we developed a computational model of

Systematic image perturbations reveal persistent gaps between human and machine vision.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are promising computational models for understanding visual object recognition. Yet, whether DNNs use similar visual cues for object recognition as humans do remains unknown. We created an image set that systematically untangles global shape, internal parts, and texture information, and compared human recognition behavior against >200 DNNs spanning diverse architectures, training diets, and training objectives. No DNNs replicated humans' cue-reliance profile, including those with recurrence or specialized training. Fine-tuned text-image contrastive-trained models, r

Gait-based neurodegenerative disease classification using multimodal temporal-spectral representations and a dual-branch CNN.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) often cause gait impairments with overlapping motor symptoms, complicating multi-class discrimination. This study proposes a lightweight dual-branch convolutional neural network integrating recurrence plots and spectrogram representations of vertical ground reaction force signals to classify Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and healthy controls. Evaluated on the Gait in NDDs Dataset comprising 64 subjects, the proposed framework achieved 96.15% accuracy, outperforming recurrence-based (94.19%) and spectrogram-based (95.

Comparison of three methods for classifying burst and suppression in the EEG of post asphyctic newborns.

Fisher's linear discriminant, a feed-forward neural network (NN) and a support vector machine (SVM) are compared with respect to their ability to distinguish bursts from suppression in burst-suppression electroencephalogram (EEG) signals using five features inherent in the EEG as input. The study is based on EEG signals from six full term infants who have suffered from perinatal asphyxia, and the methods have been trained with reference data classified by an experienced electroencephalographer. The results are summarized as area under the curve (AUC) values derived from receiver operating char

Alterations in resting-state control energy of limbic-to-subcortical networks in individuals with alcohol use disorder and comorbid sleep disturbances.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is frequently comorbid with sleep disturbances, yet the neural mechanisms through which sleep and AUD jointly shape brain organization remain unclear. Conventional resting-state analyses describe connectivity but not the energetic cost of transitions between large-scale network states. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data from 93 individuals with AUD and 91 demographically matched healthy controls (HC) from the Human Connectome Project were analyzed. Sleep was assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Static inter-network transition energies w

Leveraging Neural Networks to Correct FoldX Free Energy Estimates.

Fast and accurate prediction of folding stability and binding affinity due to protein mutations is a critical need in structural biology. While experimental methods are accurate, they are often time-consuming and costly. Computational approaches like FoldX offer fast and inexpensive alternatives by estimating free energy changes (ΔΔG) from a single 3D structure, but their accuracy remains limited. In this work, we present dFX, a neural-network-based residual correction framework that improves FoldX free energy predictions by learning from its underlying energy terms. We first assembled a colle
