Prevalence of white coat effect in treated hypertensive patients in the community.

Patients receiving drug therapy for hypertension in the tertiary care setting frequently exhibit higher office readings compared to ambulatory blood pressure values (white coat effect). In this study, the prevalence of a white coat effect was determined in an unselected population of 147 hypertensive patients receiving treatment from their family physicians in the community. The proportion of patients with a white coat effect (defined as office - ambulatory blood pressure > or = 20/10 mm Hg) was significantly (P < .001) higher when based upon the family physician's routine blood pressure readi

The Chinese-born immigrant infant feeding and growth hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Rapid growth in the first six months of life is a well-established risk factor for childhood obesity, and child feeding practices (supplementation or substitution of breast milk with formula and early introduction of solids) have been reported to predict this. The third largest immigrant group in Australia originate from China. Case-studies reported from Victorian Maternal and Child Health nurses suggest that rapid growth trajectories in the infants of Chinese parents is common place. Furthermore, these nurses report that high value is placed by this client group on rapid growth an

Effectiveness of a nurse-led online educational programme based on basic insulin therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus: A quasi-experimental trial.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led online educational programme based on patients with diabetes mellitus treated with initial basal insulin therapy. BACKGROUND: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) need to be treated with insulin to control hyperglycaemia and reduce the risk of diabetic complications when oral hypoglycaemic drugs are not effective or contraindicated. Current practices emphasise the leading role of nurses in patients treated with initial basal insulin therapy after discharge. The introduction of nurse-led online education within this are

Docetaxel-related side effects and their management.

Docetaxel is an effective treatment approved in five key cancers, but its effectiveness in clinical practice can be compromised by sub-optimal side-effect management. The aim of this review was to investigate the extent of the published work on specific docetaxel-related side effects and to provide, where possible, evidence-based recommendations for their prevention and management. PubMed and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) databases were systematically searched for articles published in English over the past 5 and 2 years, respectively, and pertaining to six side effects iden

What's new about old drugs.

Every month new clinical trials are published that provide relevant insight into medical care. Health care professionals are expected to review the results of these trials to update their knowledge and clinical practice. Although it is impossible to review every clinical trial, it is important to evaluate study findings in one's area of interest or practice. For nurses and other practitioners in the field of geriatrics, clinical trials involving drug therapy can be particularly valuable. This article is a review of clinical trials published in the past year that provide new information about d

Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Regarding Preconception Care: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Healthcare Workers in a Rural Block of Jammu and Kashmir, North India.

Background Preconception care (PCC) improves maternal and child health outcomes by optimizing women's and couples' health before pregnancy through health education, supplementary medication, dietary modifications, and reducing preconception risk factors. In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) directed all nations to develop their own PCC policies based on national needs. The government of India included PCC as a key strategy to reduce perinatal mortality and morbidity in the India Newborn Action Plan (INAP) in 2014. However, its implementation remains limited in India. Healthcare workers
