Non-analgesic effects of opioids: Topical application of Eucerin-based ointment containing opium on the healing process of thermal skin damage in rats.

The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of different doses of Eucerin-based ointment containing opium compared to routine treatment on experimentally induced burn injury. Male Wistar rats were divided into five experimental groups for topical application: silver sulfadiazine 1% (SSD), Eucerin-based ointment containing opium at concentrations of 0.05%, 0.5%, and 5%, and a Eucerin-based ointment containing 0.05% opium plus SSD (mixed group), following burn wound induction using the comb burn model. An equal volume of different ointments was administered topically. The wound appearanc

Considerations on the Controlled Delivery of Bioactive Compounds through Hyaluronic Acid Membrane.

(1) Background: The standard treatment for periodontal disease, a chronic inflammatory state caused by the interaction between biofilms generated by organized oral bacteria and the local host defense response, consists of calculus and biofilm removal through mechanical debridement, associated with antimicrobial therapy that could be delivered either systemically or locally. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a hyaluronic acid membrane matrix as a carrier for the controlled release of the active compounds of a formulation proposed as a topical treatment for periodontal di

Scrub typhus in the northern provinces of Vietnam: an observational study of admissions to a national referral hospital.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus is a common cause of fever in parts of South East and Southern Asia. Little is known about the disease burden in Vietnam. METHODS: A 2-year observational study of scrub typhus at a tertiary referral hospital in northern Vietnam was carried out. Diagnosis was based on a single serological test in patients with suggestive clinical symptoms. RESULTS: Scrub typhus was diagnosed in 3.5% (251/7226) of admissions. Cases occurred throughout the year, with incidence highest in the summer. Although complications were common, mortality was low (1.2%; 3/251). CONCLUSIONS: These

"Damaging what wasn't damaged already": psychological tension and antiretroviral adherence among HIV-infected methadone-maintained drug users.

Active drug use among HIV-infected persons is associated with poor adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and suboptimal treatment outcomes. To understand adherence experiences among HIV-infected drug users, we conducted semistructured interviews with 15 participants in a randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of directly observed HAART delivered in methadone maintenance clinics. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. We identified negative and positive psychological themes associated with both drug use and adherence. Participants desc

Relationships of Statin Therapy and Hyperlipidemia With the Incidence, Rupture, Postrepair Mortality, and All-Cause Mortality of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Cerebral Aneurysm: A Meta-analysis and Systematic Review.

Statins have been suggested in previous studies to play a protective role in experimental cerebral aneurysm (CA) models; however, no evidence supports that the application of statins can protect against aneurysm rupture in humans, and the risks of lipid levels and aneurysms remain unknown. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to summarize and update the epidemiological evidence to systematically assess the relationships of statin therapy and hyperlipidemia with the incidence, rupture, postrepair mortality, and all-cause mortality of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and CA. Related studies were i

Update on Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is an increasingly common acquired primary scarring alopecia, first described by Kossard in 1994. Clinically it is characterized by frontotemporal hairline recession, frequently accompanied by eyebrow loss. FFA was initially thought to have a hormonal origin as it was first described in postmenopausal women and premenopausal women with a history of hysterectomy or early menopause. This origin, however, has been questioned in recent years due to the publication of cases in men and premenopausal women. Although FFA has a highly characteristic clincal pattern, it

Scandcleft randomised trials of primary surgery for unilateral cleft lip and palate: 8. Assessing naso-labial appearance in 5-year-olds - a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Facial appearance is one of the most relevant measures of success in cleft lip and palate treatment. The aim was to assess nasolabial appearance at 5 years of age in all children in the project. In this part of the project the local protocol for lip closure continued to be used because the primary lip and nose operations were not part of the randomisation. The great majority of the surgeons used Millard's technique together with McComb's technique for the nose. One center used Tennison-Randalls technique and in one center the centers own technique as well as nose plugs were

A meta analysis of current status of alcohol septal ablation and surgical myectomy for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to perform an updated systematic review to compare the efficacy and short- and long-term mortality of surgical myectomy (SM) and alcohol septal ablation (ASA) by including most recent and largest cohort studies published in last few years. BACKGROUND: SM and ASA are the two invasive strategies used to relieve left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) in patients with drug refractory symptomatic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). In the absence of a randomized trial, we tried to compare the pros and cons of the two procedures using a systematic review and

The association between drugs frequently used by the elderly and vitamin D blood levels: a review of observational and experimental studies.

The risk of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) rises with increasing age. In the field of ADRs, drug-nutrient interactions (DNIs) are a relatively unexplored area. More knowledge will contribute to the simple prevention of this type of ADR. As the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly is high, the primary objective of this review is to evaluate the literature on the relationship between drug use and vitamin D status, focusing on medicines commonly used by the elderly. PubMed was searched for human epidemiological and clinical studies published until early 2013, investigating the relatio
