Warming up ground-state orbitals: A route to excitation energies?

Linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is the workhorse of spectral prediction, yet it can struggle to predict or even describe important low-lying excitation energies. An alternative is to use static formalisms to target excited-state energies directly from variational density functional theory (DFT). This may involve using custom excited-state functionals or feeding excited-state orbitals and densities into standard ground-state approximations, and can often be effective, even for describing states for which adiabatic TDDFT fails. However, this comes at the cost of …

Myofibrosarcoma of the maxillary sinus with orbital floor involvement: a case report.

Myofibrosarcoma is a rare spindle-cell malignancy with myofibroblastic differentiation, and primary maxillary sinus involvement is exceptional. A 36-year-old woman presented with progressive unilateral nasal obstruction, purulent rhinorrhea, and hemifacial pain. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a destructive 44 × 45 × 57 mm right maxillary sinus mass involving the orbital floor and extending into the nasal cavity, ethmoid cells, and pterygopalatine fossa. Histology and immunohistochemistry supported the diagnosis of myofibrosarcoma. Partial maxillectomy with tita…

Histopathological evaluation of orbital and ocular lesions: A cross-sectional study.

Orbital and ocular lesions encompass a variety of inflammatory, congenital, benign and malignant conditions, often with overlapping clinical features that make diagnosis challenging. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate the histological spectrum of these lesions and correlate the findings with clinical diagnoses. It was conducted over 18 months in a tertiary care teaching hospital using histopathological examination of surgically removed specimens. Results showed that non-neoplastic lesions were most common, followed by benign and malignant tumors. This study advances knowledge by empha…

Protein-Protein Interactions Analyzed by the Fragment Molecular Orbital Method.

This chapter describes the applications of the fragment molecular orbital (FMO) method to analyzing the protein-protein interactions (PPIs). Employing the protein complexes related to influenza virus, measles virus, SARS-CoV-2 and HER2, the intermolecular interactions between amino acid residues are quantitatively evaluated. Recent advances in computational methodology, such as the systematic identification of interaction hotspots, the incorporation of conformational fluctuations and the clustering-based statistical averaging are addressed.

Orbital Electrowetting: From Continuous Droplet Transport to Programmable Microfluidics.

Droplet transport on solid surfaces underpins applications in microfluidics, thermal management, and water harvesting. Conventional electrowetting (CEW) has enabled digital droplet control, but reliance on numerous individually addressed electrodes, complex driving circuitry, and step-wise motion has limited scalability and practical deployment. Orbital electrowetting (OEW) has recently been introduced as a complementary paradigm, where asymmetric electrowetting forces and electrostatic energy gradients drive droplets into continuous, high-speed motion along predefined orbital pathways using o…

Tips and Tricks of Orbital Atherectomy in Real-World Clinical Practice.

Orbital atherectomy (OA) is a highly effective atherectomy device used to treat heavily calcified coronary arteries. The technique for using OA is critical and depends on appropriate use of the dedicated guidewire. OA employs a centrifugal, differential sanding mechanism with bidirectional movement. When used with proper technique, the device appears to be associated with a low rate of complications, such as bradycardia and slow flow, compared with rotational atherectomy (RA), and results in high procedural success rates. We describe our experience with the OA device and procedural techniques …

Aggressive, recurrent diffuse orbital Lipoblastomatosis - a rare and challenging encounter.

Lipoblastomatosis is a rare primitive embryonal adipose tissue tumor seen in the early pediatric age group. It is diffusely infiltrative but typically benign in nature. The standard of care for the management of these tumors is complete surgical extirpation. Incomplete excision is reported to have a higher incidence of recurrence. It is an extremely uncommon tumor in the orbit and only a few cases have been previously reported in the ophthalmic literature. Herein, the authors present the case of a diffuse orbital lipoblastomatosis in a young girl that displayed very aggressive behaviour with r…

Sinonasal Myxoma With Orbital Involvement: Case Report and Literature Review.

Sinonasal myxomas are rare benign tumors that typically occur in young children, with orbital involvement in 26% of reported cases. The authors report a case manifesting solely with progressive ocular motility restrictions and diplopia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an expansile lesion occupying the right posterior ethmoid cavity with right orbital involvement. Surgical resection reduced the tumor size. Although rare, this case demonstrates that sinonasal myxoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis in young patients with ocular motility restrictions.

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Mimicking Orbital Cellulitis: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

We reported a rare case of disseminated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) initially presenting as refractory orbital cellulitis in a 53-year-old male. The patient presented with acute periorbital swelling, pain, and restricted ocular motility, unresponsive to broad-spectrum antibiotics. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed extensive sinusitis with a peripherally enhancing medial extraconal orbital mass and adjacent bony erosions. A prompt functional endoscopic sinus surgery and histopathology revealed a poorly differentiated malignant neoplasm. Immunohistochemistry confirmed DLBCL, no…
