[Pathologic aerophagia: a rare cause of chronic abdominal distension].

OBJECTIVE:: To describe an adolescent with pathologic aerophagia, a rare condition caused by excessive and inappropriate swallowing of air and to review its treatment and differential diagnoses. CASE DESCRIPTION:: An 11-year-old mentally impaired blind girl presenting serious behavior problems and severe developmental delay with abdominal distension from the last 8 months. Her past history included a Nissen fundoplication. Abdominal CT and abdominal radiographs showed diffuse gas distension of the small bowel and colon. Hirschsprung's disease was excluded. The distention was minimal at the mo

Sleep disturbance in Mowat-Wilson syndrome.

Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWS) is a multiple congenital anomaly syndrome caused by a heterozygous mutation or deletion of the ZEB2 gene. It is characterized by a distinctive facial appearance in association with intellectual disability (ID) and variable other features including agenesis of the corpus callosum, seizures, congenital heart defects, microcephaly, short stature, hypotonia, and Hirschsprung disease. The current study investigated sleep disturbance in people with MWS. In a series of unstructured interviews focused on development and behaviors in MWS, family members frequently reported s

[Language and behavioral difficulties at age 3 and half and reading delay in grade 2].

BACKGROUND: Early detection of specific language impairment and dyslexia in children is an important public health problem. Longitudinal studies are needed for the distinction of real impairments from simple transitory delays. METHODS: Teachers filled a 29-item questionnaire on language and behavior for 695 children aged 3.5 years. Four years later (at second grade of primary school) the same children were evaluated for reading and writing. Statistical analysis focused on the relationships between teacher's early observations and reading delay 4 years later. Associated factors were age, sex,

Callous/unemotional traits and social-cognitive processes in adjudicated youths.

OBJECTIVE: There seem to be two dimensions associated with psychopathic traits in youths: a callous/unemotional factor (C/U) and an impulsivity/conduct problems factor (I/CP). This study sought to clarify the nature of these two factors and examine their relation with social-cognitive problems in incarcerated adolescents. METHOD: One hundred sixty-nine male and female adjudicated youths were recruited for participation. Self-report measures and archival data were used to assess psychopathic traits, emotional distress, behavioral dysregulation, social-cognitive processes, and delinquency sever

Ethnic differences in comorbidity among substance-abusing adolescents referred to outpatient therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine differences in psychiatric comorbidity between African-American and Hispanic substance-abusing adolescents referred fo … t substance abusers. Among Hispanic youths in particular, treatments must address constellations of problem behaviors that appear to co-occur and likely represent the child's entrenchment in a deviant subculture.

Influence of socioeconomic status on behavioral, emotional and cognitive effects of rubella vaccination: a prospective, double blind study.

A double-blind prospective design was used to investigate the immediate and prolonged psychological effects of a specific viral infection, and the role of immune activation in mediating these effects. Subjects were 240 female teenager girls who were vaccinated with rubella vaccine. Based on analysis of levels of antibodies to rubella, subjects were divided into two groups. An experimental group (n = 60), which included subjects who were initially seronegative and were infected following vaccination, and a control group (n = 180), which included subjects who were already immune to rubella befor

A survey of attitudes, knowledge, and behavior related to HIV testing of adolescents and young adults enrolled in alcohol and drug treatment.

The objectives of this study were to assess attitudes, knowledge, and behavior related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody testing of adolescents and young adults undergoing treatment for alcohol and drug problems. Setting and subjects were 101 adolescents and young adults enrolled in a New England substance abuse rehabilitation program. All subjects had heard about acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and 84% desired an HIV antibody test if it were anonymous and confidential. If found to be HIV positive, 83% stated that they would be less likely to continue substance-abuse tre

Use of Direct-Acting Antiviral Agents and Survival Among Medicare Beneficiaries with Dementia and Chronic Hepatitis C.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) have chronic hepatitis C due to the high prevalence of both conditions among elderly populations. Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are effective in treating hepatitis C virus (HCV). However, the complexity of ADRD care may affect DAA use and outcomes among patients with HCV and ADRD. Little information exists on uptake of DAAs, factors associated with DAA use, and health benefits of DAAs among patients with HCV and ADRD. OBJECTIVE: To examine use and survival benefits of DAAs in Medicare patients with HCV and ADRD.

Parental aggravation may tell more about a child's mental/behavioral health than Adverse Childhood Experiences: Using the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with a number of health problems and early mortality. Developmental studies … adjustments tended to be even more pronounced, suggesting that parents seek external resources when problem behaviors become significant in their children. CONCLUSION: For children at risk, future interventions should consider the value of refocusing attention from the occurrence ACEs per se, to critical, proximal indices - parents' negative feelings around paren …

Neural Mechanisms for Adaptive Learned Avoidance of Mental Effort.

Humans tend to avoid mental effort. Previous studies have demonstrated this tendency using various demand-selection tasks; participants generally avoid options associated with higher cognitive demand. However, it remains unclear whether humans avoid mental effort adaptively in uncertain and nonstationary environments. If so, it also remains unclear what neural mechanisms underlie such learned avoidance and whether they remain the same regardless of cognitive-demand types. We addressed these issues by developing novel demand-selection tasks where associations between choice options and cognitiv

Parental ADHD and Depression: Time-Varying Prediction of Offspring Externalizing Psychopathology.

Parental attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depression are risk factors for negative child outcomes, but given their frequent co-occurrence and variability over time, developmentally sensitive studies are needed. To characterize change in parental ADHD and depression as predictors of change in child ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), 230 five- to ten-year-old children with (n = 110) and without (n = 120) ADHD were followed prospectively for 2 years with 90% retention. At baseline and again 2 years later (i.e., Wave 2), parents self-reported their ADHD and depression

Homelessness among lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth: implications for subsequent internalizing and externalizing symptoms.

Although lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth with a history of homelessness (running away or being evicted from their homes by parents) report more psychological symptoms than homeless heterosexual peers, it is unclear whether symptoms are due to homelessness, given the absence of a non-homeless comparison group. This study longitudinally investigates whether LGB youth with a history of homelessness report more subsequent psychological symptoms than non-homeless LGB youth and examines potential mediators of any such relationships. Of the 156 LGB youth interviewed (49% female; 78% non-White)

Violence against girls provokes girls' violence: from private injury to public harm.

Young women adjudicated delinquent in juvenile court report suffering inordinate amounts of emotional, physical, and sexual trauma in early childhood and adolescence. In addition, adolescent girls' arrests for violent crimes rose dramatically in the 1990s. This article explores the relationship between those two factors. Drawing from interviews with court-involved girls, this article highlights two contexts in which girls committed aggressive offenses: an incidence of intimate violence in a lesbian relationship and a stabbing in self-defense against sexual assault. I argue that the trauma witn

Multiple cognitive capabilities/deficits in children with an autism spectrum disorder: "weak" central coherence and its relationship to theory of mind and executive control.

This study examined the validity of "weak" central coherence (CC) in the context of multiple cognitive capabilities/deficits in autism. Children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and matched typically developing children were administered tasks tapping visuospatial coherence, false-belief understanding and aspects of executive control. Significant group differences were found in all three cognitive domains. Evidence of local processing on coherence tasks was widespread in the ASD group, but difficulties in attributing false beliefs and in components of executive functioning were present i

The impact of cochlear implants on young deaf children: new methods to assess cognitive and behavioral development.

Much evidence suggests that, early in life, auditory input and communication are essential for the normal development of language, cognition, and behavior. Thus, deaf children, who experience significant disruptions in auditory input, are likely to show delays not only in the production of oral language but in other important aspects of development such as visual attention and behavioral control. Cochlear implants have shown tremendous promise in restoring auditory information to deaf children and concomitant improvements in speech recognition and production. However, little is known about how

Social support and treatment response in older depressed primary care patients.

A previously tested theoretical model that specifies relationships among depression, activities of daily living (ADL) impairment, and social support components was validated with 307 patients aged 60 and older from a multisite effectiveness trial of 3 treatments (antidepressant, placebo, Problem-Solving Treatment) for dysthymia or minor depression in primary care. Participants completed interviews and self-reports at baseline and at 6 and 12 weeks. The short-term, longitudinal data were analyzed with covariance structure modeling techniques. Consistent with the previous model, impairment in AD

Cognitive and motor performance of narcoleptic and normal subjects living in temporal isolation.

Six unmedicated narcoleptic subjects and nine normal controls lived in a temporal isolation laboratory for 18-22 days. They were permitted to "free-run" for the last 9-13 days. Brief cognitive and motor performance tests were repeated on average six times per subjective day. They consisted of serial search, complex verbal reasoning tasks and manual dexterity of each hand. Only minor differences in performance were found between the narcoleptic subjects and controls. Narcoleptic subjects showed mild impairment of accuracy on the search task that could be explained by occasional lapses and an af

Act partially amending the Civil Code and other laws, 26 September 1987.

This Act amends the adoption provisions of the Japanese Civil Code to introduce special adoption. The following are the major principles governing special adoption: 1) special adoption occurs when decreed by the family court in circumstances where it is considered particularly necessary (e.g., when parental care is difficult or inadequate); 2) the adoptive parents should, in general, be married and be at least 25 years old; 3) the child adopted should be under six years old, but can be up to eight years old if the prospective adopters have taken care of it before it reached the age of six; 4)

Training skills in the psychiatrically disabled: learning coping and competence.

Social skills training methods represent a major strategy for psychiatric rehabilitation. Building skills in patients with schizophrenic and other major mental disorders is based on the assumption that coping and competence can override stress and vulnerability in reducing relapses and improving psychosocial functioning. For maximum efficiency, skills training needs to incorporate procedures and principles of human learning and information processing. Several models for skills training have been designed and evaluated, each of which has proved to be effective in raising the social competence o
