Dose Variations Using an X-Ray Cabinet to Establish in vitro Dose-Response Curves for Biological Dosimetry Assays.

In biological dosimetry, dose-response curves are essential for reliable retrospective dose estimation of individual exposure in case of a radiation accident. Therefore, blood samples are irradiated in vitro and evaluated based on the applied assay. Accurate physical dosimetry of the irradiation performance is a critical part of the experimental procedure and is influenced by the experimental setup, especially when X-ray cabinets are used. The aim of this study was to investigate variations and pitfalls associated with the experimental setups used to establish calibration curves in biological

Synthesis and biochemical properties of cyanuric acid nucleoside-containing DNA oligomers.

1-(2-Deoxy-beta-D-erythro-pentofuranosyl)cyanuric acid (cyanuric acid nucleoside, dY) (1) has been shown to be formed upon exposure of DNA components to ionizing radiation and excited photosensitizers. To investigate the biological and structural significance of dY residue in DNA, the latter modified 2'-deoxynucleoside was chemically prepared and then site-specifically incorporated into oligodeoxyribonucleotides (ODNs). This was achieved in good yields using the phosphoramidite approach. For this purpose, a convenient glycosylation method involving 3,5-protected 2-deoxyribofuranoside chloride

Assessment of Differentiated Thyroid Carcinomas in French Polynesia After Atmospheric Nuclear Tests Performed by France.

IMPORTANCE: Due to the amount of iodine 131 released in nuclear tests and its active uptake by the thyroid, differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is the most serious health risk for the population living near sites of nuclear tests. Whether low doses to the thyroid from nuclear fallout are associated with increased risk of thyroid cancer remains a controversial issue in medicine and public health, and a misunderstanding of this issue may be associated with overdiagnosis of DTCs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study was conducted by extending a case-control study publish

Genetic predisposition for the development of radiation-associated meningioma: an epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Ionising radiation is an established risk factor for meningioma, yet less than 1% of irradiated individuals develop this tumour. Familial aggregation of meningioma is rare. We aimed to assess whether genetic factors can modify the risk for meningioma formation after the initiating effect of radiation, by comparison of the frequency of meningiomas in families that included irradiated and unirradiated siblings. METHODS: This study was based on a larger epidemiological, genetic case-control study, and included 525 families that were divided according to irradiation and disease status

EPR and ENDOR study of crystalline cytosine x HCl doped with 5-methylcytosine. Radiation-induced radical formation and hole transfer.

Radical formation and hole transfer were investigated in crystals of cytosine.HCl (C.HCl) doped with 0-1.1 mol-% 5-methylcytosine x HCl (5MC x HCl). The doping level was determined by NMR spectroscopy. Crystals and polycrystalline samples were X-irradiated at 295 K, 77 K and 12 K and studied with EPR, ENDOR and FSE spectroscopy at these temperatures. At 295 K the dominant radicals were the so-called 3alphaH radical, formed in 5MC by a net H-abstraction from the methyl group, and the cytosine C6 H-addition (5-yl) radical. At 12 K five radicals were identified. These were the 3alphaH radical, cy

CONTRIBUTION OF THE G1691A ALLELE CARRYING OF THE COAGULATION FACTOR V GENE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THROMBOSES IN RADIATION-EXPOSED PATIENTS WITH REACTIVE CHANGES IN PERIPHERAL BLOOD.

UNLABELLED: Thrombosis triggers, in addition to «classic» risk factors (RFs) of cardiovascular events, includes the reactive changesof peripheral blood (RCPB), markers of the hereditary thrombophilia and radiation anamnesis. However, results ofmost studies suggest the «classic» RFs are able to neutralize the prothrombogenic potential of the hereditary thrombophilia and other, less powerful predictors of thrombosis. OBJECTIVE: to determine the influence of the G1691A allele of the proaccelerin gene carrying to the thrombosis development, taking into account the vascular type of their occurrenc

Differential expression of thymic DNA repair genes in low-dose-rate irradiated AKR/J mice.

We previously determined that AKR/J mice housed in a low-dose-rate (LDR) ((137)Cs, 0.7 mGy/h, 2.1 Gy) γ-irradiation facility developed less spontaneous thymic lymphoma and survived longer than those receiving sham or high-dose-rate (HDR) ((137)Cs, 0.8 Gy/min, 4.5 Gy) radiation. Interestingly, histopathological analysis showed a mild lymphomagenesis in the thymus of LDR-irradiated mice. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether LDR irradiation could trigger the expression of thymic genes involved in the DNA repair process of AKR/J mice. The enrichment analysis of Gene Ontology terms and

Multicolour FISH analysis of ionising radiation induced micronucleus formation in human lymphocytes.

Micronucleation of chromosomal DNA is an effective indicator of DNA damage and micronucleus (MN) analysis is a valuable tool for radiation biodosimetry studies. To gain a comprehensive knowledge of micronucleation process after ionising radiation (IR) exposure, whole genome-wide chromosome analysis is desirable. With this objective, multicolour fluorescence in situ hybridization (M-FISH) technique was utilised in the present study to characterise the chromosome content of spontaneous and IR-induced micronuclei in three human donors. M-FISH analysis revealed a radiation dose-dependant increase

Analysis of spontaneous and bleomycin-induced chromosome damage in peripheral lymphocytes of long-haul aircrew members from Argentina.

Spontaneous and bleomycin (BLM)-induced chromosomal aberrations in G0 and G2 stages of the cell cycle have been analyzed in peripheral lymphocytes of 21 long-haul aircrew members from Argentina in order to assess BLM-induced clastogenesis as a first approach to determine the DNA repair capacity and thereby the susceptibility to environmental cancers in aircrew. The possibility that occupational exposure of flight personnel to cosmic radiation can induce an adaptive response in their peripheral lymphocytes that can be detected by a subsequent in vitro treatment with BLM was also investigated. Clinical and economic impact of vascular access teams utilizing an IC-ECG-based tip confirmation system for peripherally inserted central catheters.

INTRODUCTION: Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are commonly used in clinical practice. Historical PICC placement methods (e.g. fluoroscopy-guided placement or blind insertion with confirmatory chest X-ray) have many limitations and are associated with longer wait times, treatment delays, and potential risks to patient safety. One such way of addressing some of these issues is the use of dedicated systems that integrate ultrasound vessel selection and PICC insertion, magnetic catheter tip navigation, and intracavitary electrocardiogram-based tip confirmation (IC-ECG). The uptake

Mechanistic insights into Moringa oleifera leaf bioactive against cytotoxic stress: an integrative approach.

Exposure to ionizing radiation during medical diagnostics and cancer therapy often results in collateral damage to healthy cells, primarily due to the generation of free radicals. Moringa oleifera (MO), known for its rich antioxidant profile, may offer protective effects against such damage. This study investigates the radioprotective potential of MO leaf extract against DNA damage induced by bleomycin and X-irradiation. The antioxidant capacity of the extract was evaluated using DPPH radical scavenging assays, which revealed a dose-dependent increase in free radical inhibition, from 21.51% at

Dual-domain latent alignment for MRI-to-CT synthesis via target-aware manifold learning.

Computed tomography (CT) is essential for clinical diagnosis and radiotherapy planning but involves ionizing radiation, motivating the synthesis of CT images from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Most existing MRI-to-CT synthesis methods rely on fully paired supervision, which is difficult to scale in practice and restricts the availability of diverse training data. While unpaired CT samples can provide additional anatomical priors, current approaches typically exploit them as generic style references, lacking explicit mechanisms to preserve anatomical geometry. In this work, we propose DELA-

Nested Case-Control Study of Incident Prostate Cancer in Danish Male Military Pilots.

OBJECTIVES: Pilots may have an increased risk of prostate cancer, potentially linked to circadian rhythm disruptions from crossing time zones, prolonged sedentary work, and ionizing radiation. However, existing research on associations presents inconsistent findings, likely attributable to methodological limitations, such as using the general population as a reference group and reliance on mortality as the primary outcome measure. This study aimed to contribute to understanding of the incidence of prostate cancer in pilots. METHODS: This nested case-control study included 54 male prostate can

Tracking tuberculosis control using detailed population health and satellite luminosity data: findings from Kazakhstan.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan, like many other formerly socialist countries, experienced a surge in tuberculosis (TB). Despite the successful efforts of Kazakhstan's Ministry of Health in reducing TB related mortality, analysis of TB risk factors in Kazakhstan remains incomplete. This study takes advantage of detailed district-level population health data, and links TB to the presence of man-made environmental damage from the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site and the desiccation of the Aral Sea. Using both propensity score matching and regression models, along with censu

Beyond Suspected Appendicitis: Ultrasonography in a Child With Multifocal Lymphadenitis and Suspected Cat-Scratch Disease.

Ultrasonography is particularly useful in children because it can be repeated without ionizing radiation and can be adapted to the clinical question during the examination. A 10-year-old boy with right lower quadrant pain, right leg pain, and a limp was referred with suspected acute appendicitis. A comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound examination of the abdomen demonstrated a normal appendix and an enlarged lymph node corresponding to the site of right lower quadrant tenderness. During the examination, conversation with the patient and his mother disclosed household cat ownership, frequent expo

Artificial intelligence in thyroid ultrasound: clinical applications and perspectives.

Thyroid nodules are highly prevalent, with increasing detection rates driven by advanced imaging and expanded screening. Ultrasound serves as the first-line tool for screening, diagnosis and follow-up, owing to its non-invasiveness, real-time capability, cost-effectiveness and absence of ionizing radiation. However, conventional ultrasound diagnosis is highly operator-dependent, resulting in substantial inter-observer variability and diagnostic errors, particularly for subtle or indeterminate lesions. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning and radiomics, has emerged as a prom
