Development and characterization of multiplex panels of polymorphic microsatellite loci in giant liver fluke Fascioloides magna (Trematoda: Fasciolidae), using next-generation sequencing approach.

The microsatellite markers were designed for the giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, veterinary important liver parasite of free-living and domestic ruminants. Due to its geographic distribution (five enzootic regions across USA and Canada, three permanent European foci) and invasive character, F. magna is an interesting model for population genetics. Out of 667 amplicon candidates generated after NGS, 118 provided the best resolution and were tested with PCR analysis. In total, 56 yielded PCR products of expected size and in 36 of them the declared repetitive motif was identified by Sanger…

Bluetongue dynamics in French wildlife: exploring the driving forces.

Bluetongue (BT) was monitored in wildlife in France during two consecutive years corresponding to contrasting incidence rates in livestock: in 2008 at the peak of domestic outbreaks and in 2009 when very few outbreaks were observed. The disease status of 2 798 ruminants comprising 837 red deer (Cervus elaphus) was explored using ELISA test on serum and real-time RT-PCR test on blood or spleen. A large proportion of red deer were seropositive and positive to RT-PCR in 2008, but also in 2009 (seroprevalence: 47.1% and 24.3%), suggesting that red deer could maintain infection when domestic incide…

Participatory epidemiology to assess sarcoptic mange in serow of Taiwan.

We used participatory epidemiology (PE) in remote areas to understand the observed distribution and prevalence of infestation by sarcoptic mange mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) on wild Formosan serow (Capricornis swinhoei) in Taiwan. A semistructured interview protocol was used for 37 interviews during June-December 2008. Serow with skin lesions consistent with sarcoptic mange were reported within a latitudinal range of approximately 24°00'N to 22°40'N on the Central Mountain Range of Taiwan. The observed prevalence was 40-80% in seven of the 19 interview districts. Clinical signs were observed main

From fetus to adult--an allometric analysis of the giraffe vertebral column.

As mammalian cervical vertebral count is almost always limited to seven, the vertebral column of the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) provides an interesting study on scaling and adaptation to shape in light of these constraints. We have defined and described the growth rates of the lengths, widths, and heights of the vertebrae from fetal through neonatal life to maturity. We found that the disproportionate elongation of the cervical vertebrae is not a fetal process but occurs after birth, and that each cervical (C2-C7) vertebrae elongates at the same rate. C7 is able to specialize toward elon

[The problem of Q fever in zoo ungulates].

Antibodies to Coxiella burnetii were recorded from approximately 13% of 469 ungulates which had been examined by means of micro-CFT (complement fixation test). Particular reference is made to a Q-fever situation in a musk ox herd. The results obtained from these investigations are likely to support the conclusion that latent Q-fever infection may be expected to occur in ungulates and to grow manifest in stress situations.

Influence of food deprivation on SCFA and electrolyte transport across sheep reticulorumen.

Net absorption rates for SCFA, sodium, chloride, magnesium, and water were measured in the temporarily isolated and washed reticulorumen of sheep. The animals were either fed hay ad lib. plus concentrates once daily or were deprived of food for two days. Food deprivation led to decreased net absorption of all the substances tested. Comparing the solutes, the relative decreases varied between 43% (butyrate) and 56% (acetate). The decrease in solute absorption was accompanied by diminished water absorption. It is concluded that the reduction in absorption may be beneficial for the animal in that

Differential scaling of the long bones in the terrestrial carnivora and other mammals.

We measured the lengths and diameters of four long bones from 118 terrestrial carnivoran species using museum specimens. Though intrafamilial regressions scaled linearly, nearly all intraordinal regressions scaled non-linearly. The observed non-linear scaling of bone dimensions within this order results from a systematic decrease in intrafamilial allometric slope with increasing body size. A change in limb posture (more upright in larger species) to maintain similar peak bone stresses may allow the nearly isometric scaling of skeletal dimensions observed in smaller sized mammals (below about 1

[Control of antroduodenal motility in sheep].

The continuous but cyclic delivery of contents through the pylorus in the adult ruminant is regulated by the initiation of the migrating myoelectric complexes on the duodenal bulb. The motor responses of the pyloric antrum to the volume of digestive contents, the presence of lipids and ulcerogenic agents revealed that the inhibition of the motor antral activity, whatever its origin, resulted in a higher frequency of the duodenal cyclic motor events. Conversely, stimulation of duodenal motor activity, for example the increased frequency of migrating myoelectric complexes, resulted in the inhibi

A Mouse Model of PPRV Infection for Elucidating Protective and Pathological Roles of Immune Cells.

The study was aimed at developing an accessible laboratory animal model to elucidate protective and pathological roles of immune mediators during Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) infection. It is because of the critical roles of type I IFNs in anti-viral defense, we assessed the susceptibility of IFN receptor knock out (IFNR KO) mice to PPRV infection. IFNR KO mice were exceedingly susceptible to the infection but WT animals efficiently controlled PPRV. Accordingly, the PPRV infected IFNR KO mice gradually reduced their body weights and succumbed to the infection within 10 days irrespec…

Use of Akaike information criteria for model selection and inference. An application to assess prevention of gastrointestinal parasitism and respiratory mortality of Guinean goats in Kolda, Senegal.

A field experiment was carried out in Kolda (southern Senegal) from July 1986 to July 1988. Its goals were to: (1) describe the patterns of mortality of female Guinean goats by age, season and year; (2) assess preventive measures against respiratory diseases and gastrointestinal parasitism in reducing mortality; and (3) estimate the overall impact of these measures on survival to 1 year of age. Preventive measures for respiratory disease included vaccination against peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and pneumonic pasteurellosis (Pasteurella multocida types A and D). Control of gastrointestinal …

Behavioral assessment and treatment of postprandial regurgitation.

The behavioral assessment and treatment of five patients with postprandial symptoms of regurgitation and "rumination" illustrate the contribution of behavior therapy to alleviating postprandial distress. They also suggest that psychological/behavioral factors may influence the development and course of some gastrointestinal disorders.

Latent typologies of posttraumatic stress disorder amongst first responders: a comparison to combat veterans.

First responders and veterans are disproportionately affected by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Findings from the extant literature suggest that there may be distinct subtypes of PTSD, and that differences in occupations and the types of traumas experienced may be related to different symptom presentations. As such, the present study used latent profile analysis to identify latent subtypes of PTSD in a carefully diagnosed sample of veterans and first responders. In doing so, we identified a four-profile solution: Cognitive Distress (26.9 %), Anhedonic Avoidance (33.2 %), Ruminative Arou

Bedtime procrastination as a typical problem of self-regulation? Insights from the examination of heart rate variability, behavioral regulation and emotion regulation.

Bedtime procrastination (BP), recognized as a common self-regulation issue, is linked to insufficient sleep and in turn, adverse health outcomes. However, the specific contributions of different components of self-regulation - particularly the biological underpinnings - remain insufficiently understood. This cross-sectional study aims to explore the relationship between BP and self-regulation components, namely vagally-mediated HRV (vmHRV) as physiological concomitant of self-regulation, behavioral regulation, and emotion regulation. A final sample of N = 135 adults completed a baseline vmHRV

Auditory P50 Sensory Gating Alterations in Major Depressive Disorder and their Relationship to Clinical Symptoms.

Cognitive deficits in depression are pervasive and include impairments in attention and higher-order functions but the degree to which low-level sensory processes are affected is unclear. The present work examined event-related potential (P50 and N100) features of auditory sensory gating (i.e., the ability to inhibit P50/N100 responses to redundant stimuli) and their relationship to depressive symptoms, including ruminations and dysfunctional attitudes. In 18 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 18 healthy volunteers, auditory sensory gating was measured using a paired-stimulus pa

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, and Depression Symptoms After Potentially Traumatic Events: Latent Classes and Cognitive Correlates.

People exposed to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) may develop distinct symptom patterns, which may require different therapeutic approaches. We aimed to identify classes of people exposed to PTEs based on the presence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) clusters, anxiety, and depression and to explore which cognitive factors (rumination, worry, and negative cognitions) are associated with class membership. Latent class analyses were conducted to identify subgroups of 258 PTE-exposed Spanish adults. A three-class solution emerged: a resilient class with low odds of all symptoms ( n = 18
