[Paying attention to cerebral/central visual impairment].

Cerebral/central visual impairment (CVI) has a wide range of features owing to central visual pathway disorders. It is currently the most common type of visual impairment in children in developed countries and is increasing in the developing world. The major cause of CVI is hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in premature children. CVI occurs from the postgeniculate visual pathway to the occipital lobe and results in severe visual impairment and even blindness. CVI may also lead to visual cognitive disability, walk difficulty, delayed social interaction and autism spectrum. These children are less…

An overview of modeling and behavioral assessment of autism in the rodent.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are common neurodevelopmental disorders with a growing incidence that generally present in the first 3 years of life. Behavioral symptoms, including impaired social interaction and increased repetitive or stereotypic movements, are hallmark characteristics of autism. Animal models are research tools used to study the biology of the disease and to develop new therapeutic approaches. The complexity of the etiology of autism makes it challenging to develop a comprehensive animal model that accurately mimics different clinical aspects of autism. Here, we reviewed t…

"For Me, the Anorexia is Just a Symptom, and the Cause is the Autism": Investigating Restrictive Eating Disorders in Autistic Women.

Autistic women are overrepresented among people in treatment for Anorexia Nervosa (AN). The current study aimed to: (1) better understand how AN develops and persists in autistic individuals from the perspective of autistic women, parents and healthcare professionals; (2) derive a theoretical model of restrictive eating difficulties in autism. We conducted 44 semi-structured interviews and used Thematic Analysis to identify patterns of meaning across the data. Themes related to sensory sensitivities, social interaction and relationships, sense of self and identity, difficulties with emotions, …

Understanding Suicide Risk in Autistic Adults: Comparing the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide in Autistic and Non-autistic Samples.

This study explored whether the Interpersonal Theory of suicide informs our understanding of high rates of suicidality in autistic adults. Autistic and non-autistic adults (n = 695, mean age 41.7 years, 58% female) completed an online survey of self-reported thwarted belonging, perceived burden, autistic traits, suicidal capability, trauma, and lifetime suicidality. Autistic people reported stronger feelings of perceived burden, thwarted belonging and more lifetime trauma than non-autistic people. The hypothesised interaction between burdensomeness and thwarted belonging were observed in the n

Autistic Symptoms in Children and Adolescents with Gender Dysphoria.

Studies have shown an increase of symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in gender dysphoria (GD). Various hypotheses try to explain this possible co-occurrence (e.g., a role of resistance to change, stereotyped behaviors or prenatal testosterone exposure). This study examined ASD symptoms with the Children's Social Behavior Questionnaire (CSBQ) in 490 children with GD compared to 2507 typically developing (TD) and 196 children with ASD. CSBQ total scores of the GD sample were in between scores from the TD and ASD sample. The GD sample showed elevated levels of autistic symptomatology on a

Vagal Regulation in Breastfeeding Infants and Their Mothers.

Consistent with the gustatory-vagal hypothesis, vagal stimulation during breastfeeding may contribute to infants' physiological regulatory development independent of caregiving effects. This study examined whether breastfeeding predicted 6-month-old infants' (N = 151) and their mothers' vagal regulation during the face-to-face still-face (FFSF). Although breastfed and nonbreastfed infants showed expected vagal withdrawal during the Still-Face episode, only breastfed infants showed continued withdrawal during the reunion episode, suggesting greater physiological mobilization to repair the inter

A Concise History of Asperger Syndrome: The Short Reign of a Troublesome Diagnosis.

First described in 1944 by Hans Asperger (1944), it was not before 1994 that Asperger Syndrome (AS) was included in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, only to disappear in the Manual's fifth edition in 2013. During its brief existence as a diagnostic entity, AS aroused immense interest and controversy. Similar to patients with autism, AS patients show deficits in social interaction, inappropriate communication skills, and interest restriction, but also display a rich variety of subtle clinical characteristics that for many distinguish AS from autis…

The effects of the fast track preventive intervention on the development of conduct disorder across childhood.

The impact of the Fast Track intervention on externalizing disorders across childhood was examined. Eight hundred-ninety-one early-starting children (69% male; 51% African American) were randomly assigned by matched sets of schools to intervention or control conditions. The 10-year intervention addressed parent behavior-management, child social cognitive skills, reading, home visiting, mentoring, and classroom curricula. Outcomes included psychiatric diagnoses after grades 3, 6, 9, and 12 for conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and any ext

[Brain imaging in autism spectrum disorders. A review].

In the past two decades, an increasing number of functional and structural brain imaging studies has provided insights into the neurobiological basis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This article summarizes pertinent functional brain imaging studies addressing the neuronal underpinnings of ASD symptomatology (impairments in social interaction and communication, repetitive and restrictive behavior) and associated neuropsychological deficits (theory of mind, executive functions, central coherence), complemented by relevant structural imaging findings. The results of these studies show that al…

An evaluation of antecedent exercise on behavior maintained by automatic reinforcement using a three-component multiple schedule.

We evaluated antecedent exercise for treating the automatically reinforced problem behavior of 4 individuals with autism. We conducted preference assessments to identify leisure and exercise items that were associated with high levels of engagement and low levels of problem behavior. Next, we conducted three 3-component multiple-schedule sequences: an antecedent-exercise test sequence, a noncontingent leisure-item control sequence, and a social-interaction control sequence. Within each sequence, we used a 3-component multiple schedule to evaluate preintervention, intervention, and postinterven

Genetic studies in children with intellectual disability and autistic spectrum of disorders.

Autism is one of the five disorders that falls under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a category of neurological disorders characterized by "severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development." ASD is characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills, social interaction and restricted, repetitive stereotyped patterns of behavior. The five disorders under PDD are autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett's disorder and PDD-not otherwise specified. ASD can often be re…

[Diagnosis of Asperger syndrome in infancy and childhood].

I discussed, in this chapter, the possibilities and limitations of clinical diagnosis for Asperger syndrome (AS) in infancy and early childhood. For early diagnosis or simply noticing the possibility of AS, clinicians should be sensitive to the auxiliary conditions of AS such as motor dysfunction and sensory/sleep disturbances during the early stage of life, as well as the incipient representations of the main AS symptoms in the diagnostic criteria, such as lack of reciprocal social interaction or joint attention. Future prospective study with large cohort, or creation of the new methods for c…

[Autism, chromosome 15 and the GAbaergic dysfunction hypothesis].

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairment of social interaction, language, communication, and stereotyped, repetitive behavior. Genetic predisposition to autism has been demonstrated from families and twin studies. Despite recent advances in identifying some susceptibility candidate genes, its underlying neurological mechanism is uncertain. There are genetic, biochemical and neuropathological findings that support the hypothesis that autism could be caused by GABAergic dysfunction and it is partially responsible for the etiology of this disorder. One of the mo…

Orthognathic surgery for secondary cleft and craniofacial deformities.

Orthognathic surgery is a critical component of surgical management of craniofacial deformities such as cleft lip and palate, craniofacial dysostoses, and mandibulofacial dysostoses. These operations can correct discrepancy in jaw relationship and malocclusion, relieve airway obstruction, correct facial asymmetry, optimize facial aesthetics, improve speech articulation, improve ability to masticate, and enhance psychological development and social interaction. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons who treat these deformities should be part of a craniofacial team to provide interdisciplinary care for…

Is autism an autoimmune disease?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a spectrum of behavioral anomalies characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, often accompanied by repetitive and stereotyped behavior. The condition manifests within the first 3 years of life and persists into adulthood. There are numerous hypotheses regarding the etiology and pathology of ASD, including a suggested role for immune dysfunction. However, to date, the evidence for involvement of the immune system in autism has been inconclusive. While immune system abnormalities have been reported in children with autistic disorder, there i…

Gender differences in the experience of intimate partner violence among active duty U.S. Army soldiers.

The relationship of intimate partner violence to psychological distress and the mediating or moderating effects of social support were examined among 99 married active duty Army women and 477 married active duty Army men. Although approximately 40% of both the men and the women had experienced physical partner violence in the past year, in neither group was physical violence correlated with psychological distress when controlling for other variables. Among women, psychological abuse inflicted by a partner was significantly associated with greater psychological distress. Among men, poor marital

Breast implants and illness: a model of psychological factors.

Studies of disease outcomes have not produced an explanation or an intervention for the symptoms and complaints that some women have attributed to breast implants. Reviews of the literature have found no increased risk of specific systemic disease, and no treatment recommendations have emerged. However, similar symptoms in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and other contexts have been considered to be stress or behaviourally mediated, and a number of promising behavioural interventions have been developed. Aetiological, research, and treatment implications may follow from the consideration of suc
