Pathways to social integration among homeless-experienced adults with serious mental illness: a qualitative perspective.

BACKGROUND: Social integration (i.e., reciprocal interactions with peers and community members) is a notable challenge for many homeless-experienced adults with serious mental illness (SMI). In this study, we examine a range of housing services offered to homeless-experienced adults with SMI and identify the impacts of supportive services on participants' social integration outcomes, with the goal of improving services in transitional and permanent housing settings for homeless-experienced adults with SMI. METHODS: Through semi-structured interviews with homeless-experienced adults with SMI (

HIV-Related Sexual Risk among African American Men Preceding Incarceration: Associations with Support from Significant Others, Family, and Friends.

We evaluated the association between social support received from significant others, family, and friends and HIV-related sexual risk behaviors among African American men involved in the criminal justice system. Project DISRUPT is a cohort study among African American men released from prison in North Carolina (N = 189). During the baseline (in-prison) survey, we assessed the amount of support men perceived they had received from significant others, family, and friends. We measured associations between low support from each source (<median value) and participants' sex risk in the 6 months befo…

"I need to talk, to talk to people": a qualitative study of service user and carer views and priorities for social functioning in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.

Improving social functioning for people with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders is a priority for service users, carers and broader society. While many face challenges with social functioning, a proportion do obtain a job, a partner, and other valued social goals. Informal carers are key stakeholders, support recovery and may support service users' social functioning, though some research suggests carer and service user priorities may differ. Research suggests item content in measures of social functioning may not fully capture people's social world. The aim of this study was to explore service

Having more friends is associated with greater sensitization to social exclusion: neural and behavioral evidence.

Social rejection profoundly affects well-being. How do features of people's real-world social networks relate to responses to social exclusion? People central in social networks-e.g. who have many friends-may be less distressed by exclusion, since they have many sources of support, or more sensitive to it, if they are more attuned to social feedback. We characterized a village's social network; a subset of residents (N = 74) completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study involving social exclusion in groups characterized by varying social relationships (spouses, friends, strang

Couch-Surfing and HIV Risk Behavior Among Young Adults Experiencing Homelessness.

Young adults experiencing homelessness (YAEH) are significantly more likely to engage in HIV risk-related sexual behavior relative to their stably housed peers, and their social support networks can influence their engagement in these behaviors. However, few studies have investigated HIV risk behaviors among YAEH who are "couch-surfing," a highly prevalent network-based survival strategy that involves cycling through temporary, informal housing arrangements. The current study utilizes survey data collected from 461 YAEH accessing drop-in center services in Los Angeles, California, between Sept…

Growing up amidst violence: mapping mental health ecologies with young people on Colombia's Pacific Coast.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing violence and conflict during childhood and adolescence can significantly impact mental health, including affecting young people's social and economic development. We lack research in conflict-affected contexts that directly analyses the perceptions and experiences of young people themselves. We do not understand enough how conflict-affected environments damage the social tissue and connectedness of young people. We need a better understanding of the resources and agency that young people have to access support for their mental health and emotional wellbeing. METHODS:
