Anhedonia as a phenotypic marker of familial transmission of polysubstance use trajectories across midadolescence.

Psychopathologic traits that arise in adolescence may increase proneness to substance use uptake as well as channel the familial transmission of substance use. Poly use is a common pattern of substance use in youth. To identify a parsimonious model of familial transmission of substance use, the current study tested whether anhedonia-a psychopathologic endophenotype manifested as the inability to experience pleasure-mediates the association of family history of substance use (FHS) with polysubstance use patterns across midadolescence. High school students (N = 3,392) in Los Angeles, CA, complet

Anxiety and depression following traumatic limb amputation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic amputation can result in multiple physical, psychological and socio-economic sequalae. While there has been a significant increase in investment and public profile of the rehabilitation of patients who have experienced traumatic limb amputation, little is known about the prevalence of anxiety and depression, especially in the long term. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between traumatic limb amputation and anxiety and depression. DATA SOURCES: A literature search of available databases including Cochrane, Medline, Embase, and PsycINFO was performed for relevant s

The forest and the trees: relational and specific factors in addiction treatment.

AIMS: Increased expectations for the use of evidence-based methods in addiction treatment have fueled a debate regarding the relative importance of 'specific' versus 'common' factors in treatment outcome. This review explores the influence of these factors on addiction treatment outcome. METHODS: The authors review and link findings from four decades of research on specific and general factors in addiction treatment outcome research. FINDINGS: Although few would argue that what one does in addiction treatment is immaterial, outcome studies tend to find small to no difference when specific tr

A randomized trial of Parents Who Care: effects on key outcomes at 24-month follow-up.

This study was designed to test the efficacy of Parents Who Care (PWC), a seven-session universal prevention program which includes parenting, youth, and family components designed to prevent substance use and other problem behaviors. Using an intent-to-treat experimental design, this study tests the program efficacy across race within a balanced sample of European American (EA) and African American (AA) youth and their parents (n = 331 n AA = 163; n EA = 168). Families were recruited, randomly assigned to three conditions (group-administered [PA], self-administered with telephone support [SA]

Risk profiles of adolescent girls who were victims of dating violence.

The prevalence of dating violence, as well as its relationship to potential risk factors, was examined among a nationally representative sample of 9th-through 12th-grade U.S. females (N = 7,824) who completed the 1999 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The dependent variable was physical dating violence; the independent variables were violence, suicide, substance use, and sexual risk behavior. Unadjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals were examined, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the most significant risk factors. It was found that nearly one in

Forgotten fathers: an exploratory study of mothers' report of drug and alcohol problems among fathers of urban newborns.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between fathers' substance use and maternal and paternal background characteristics, infant outcome measures, and fathers' frequency of caregiving at 6 months postpartum in a cohort of cocaine-exposed and unexposed infants. METHODS: Secondary analysis was completed on data collected through interviews and medical records obtained from 252 mothers participating in an ongoing longitudinal study of cocaine-exposed and unexposed mothers and infants. RESULTS: By maternal report, 22% of the mothers reported that the father of the baby had a history of a

Interpersonal aggressive behaviour and alcohol consumption among young urban adolescents in France.

In order to supplement existing studies of deviant populations (alcoholics, drug addicts, jailed delinquents) and to bring to light the existence of early relationships between aggressiveness and alcohol consumption, an epidemiological survey was carried out among 1601 adolescents (aged 13-16) from a suburban area of Paris. Some types of the aggressive behaviour studied were more socially acceptable--breaking objects, hitting people, fighting--than others--threatening to use or using physical violence to obtain money or objects from people. A majority of the adolescents had already demonstrate

The effect of drugs on male sexual function and fertility.

Drugs may have negative effects on male libido, erection, ejaculation and orgasm, as well as on fertility, and research on these effects is increasing. Libido may be decreased by drugs that block dopamine or testosterone, or that cause dysphoria. Erection may be decreased by drugs that divert blood flow from the penis, or drugs that affect spinal reflexes. Ganglion blockers may also inhibit erection. Ejaculation may be diminished by drugs that affect spinal reflexes or be inhibited by ganglion blockage. Enervation of the vas deferens and epididymis may be blocked and cause a smaller emission.

Prediction of risk for drug use in high school students.

On the basis of questionnaires administered to almost 2,000 high school students in Cali, Colombia, a subset of items was selected that deal primarily with parent-child relationships. This 53 item set, referred to as the Drug Risk Scale (DRS), was administered to two new cross-validation samples, one consisting of high school students and the other consisting of drug addicts attending drug rehabilitation centers. Significant differences in parent-child relations were found between these new groups. The DRS was also found to have reasonably high sensitivity and specificity. Its potential value

Thymostimulin treatment in AIDS-related complex.

Thirty-four patients with AIDS-related complex (ARC) were treated for 6 months with thymostimulin, a thymic hormone. Clinical and immunological findings after a 1-year follow-up were compared with those in 24 age- and sex-matched controls receiving no immunotherapy. Statistical evaluation after 6 and 12 months showed significant differences in the two groups. The thymostimulin-treated group had higher leukocyte and lymphocyte counts, more positivity in intradermal tests with multiple recall antigens, and less lymphadenopathy and weight loss. The number of OKT3+ and OKT4+ lymphocytes decreased

Stigmatisation of Gambling Disorder, Alcohol Use Disorder and Internet Use Disorder: Results of an Experimental Vignette Study.

People with mental health problems are subject to stigmatisation and there is evidence that addictive disorders are particularly stigmatised. Aim of this study was to analyse potential differences in the amount or quality of stigmatisation between substance- and non-substance related addictive disorders. An experimental vignette study was conducted, in which participants of an online survey (N = 2052, 50.4% male, 49.0% female, 0.6% diverse, age: M = 40.7 [SD = 14.92] years) randomly received one of four descriptions of a female or male person with either gambling disorder, alcohol use disorder

Prevalence and correlates of antisocial personality disorder in older adults.

OBJECTIVES: There is a paucity of research on antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) in the geriatric population and the majority of knowledge on the disorder is drawn from young adult samples. Researchers posit that the prevalence of ASPD as well as other personality disorders (PDs) is underestimated among older adults. Using a nationally representative sample, the present study examines the prevalence and correlates of ASPD in adults ages 50 and older. METHODS: We analyzed data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions Waves I and III. Multivariate logistic re

Staging of mental disorders: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The staging method, whereby a disorder is characterized according to its seriousness, extension, development and features, is attracting increasing attention in clinical psychology and psychiatry. The aim of this systematic review was to critically summarize the tools that are available for reproducing and standardizing the clinical intuitions that are involved in a staging formulation. METHODS: A comprehensive research was conducted on the MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE and Cochrane databases from inception to May 2012. The following search terms were used: 'stage/staging' AND 'psychi

Do peer perceptions mediate the effects of ADHD symptoms and conduct problems on substance use for college students?

Although extensive research suggests that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct problems (CP; symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and antisocial personality disorder) contribute to risk for substance use, why these symptoms increase risk for substance use remains unclear. Given that research indicates that perceived peer tolerance and perceived peer substance use affect substance use, we evaluated the degree to which these peer-perception constructs mediated the association that ADHD symptoms, CP symptoms, and their interaction share with substanc

Longitudinal links from attachment with mothers and fathers to adolescent substance use: Internalizing and externalizing pathways.

The present study examined whether internalizing and externalizing symptoms may mediate the association between adolescent-mother and adolescent-father attachment and substance use. The sample included 167 adolescents (47% girls) who were assessed at five time points with approximately 1 year between each assessment, beginning in middle adolescence (Mage = 14.07) and ending in the transition to young adulthood (Mage = 18.39). The adolescents reported their perceived attachment with both their mother and father during middle adolescence (Times 1 and 2), their internalizing and externalizing sym

Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences and Perinatal Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Substance Use.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum mental health conditions including depression are a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACE) have a dose-response predictive relationship to postpartum depression, highlighting mothers' own early relational trauma as an important risk factor for both mother and infant's postpartum course. Currently, far less is understood about whether maternal ACEs create risk for other postpartum mental health conditions that can negatively impact mother and baby. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to understand the relationship betwe

Implementation Studies Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse on Opioid and Stimulant Use Disorders Treatment: An Updated Mapping Review (2020-2024).

BACKGROUND: While there is high demand for rapid translation of evidence-based innovations related to opioid and stimulant disorders, implementation research-proven to enhance utilization of evidence-based practices-comprises only a small portion of substance-related treatment studies. METHODS: We conducted a mapping review of the National Institute on Drug Abuse investment in implementation-focused studies for opioid and stimulant use disorders treatment from 2020 through 2024. Replicating the same methodology, this review extends the work of Cheng et al. who examined funded studies on the s

Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy: A Review of a Novel Treatment for Psychiatric Disorders.

Recent research suggests that functional connectivity changes may be involved in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. Hyperconnectivity in the default mode network has been associated with psychopathology, but psychedelic serotonin agonists like psilocybin may profoundly disrupt these dysfunctional neural network circuits and provide a novel treatment for psychiatric disorders. We have reviewed the current literature to investigate the efficacy and safety of psilocybin-assisted therapy for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. There were seven clinical trials that investigated psilo

Increased psychological distress in post-partum, cocaine-using mothers.

This study investigated psychological symptoms, self-reported postpartum by poor, primarily African American women who used cocaine during pregnancy. Ninety-nine cocaine-using mothers (COC+) were compared to 44 noncocaine-using mothers (COC-) on standardized measures of psychological distress and verbal comprehension. Mothers were interviewed to determined extent of drug involvement. COC+ mothers reported using alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco at two to three times the rate of comparison mothers during pregnancy and reported earlier initiation of marijuana use. COC+ women were more likely to ad
