Controlled scanpath variation alters fusiform face activation.

We investigated the influence of experimentally guided saccades and fixations on fMRI activation in brain regions specialized for face and object processing. Subjects viewed a static image of a face while a small fixation cross made a discrete jump within the image every 500 ms. Subjects were required to make a saccade and fixate the cross at its new location. Each run consisted of alternating blocks in which the subject was guided to make a series of saccades and fixations that constituted either a Typical or an Atypical face scanpath. Typical scanpaths were defined as a scanpath in which the

Category-specific occipitotemporal activation during face perception in dyslexic individuals: an MEG study.

In dyslexia, it is consistently found that letter strings produce an abnormally weak or no response in the left occipitotemporal cortex. Time-sensitive imaging techniques have located this deficit to the category-specific processing stage at about 150 ms after stimulus presentation. The typically reported behavioral impairments in dyslexia suggest that the lack of occipitotemporal activation is specific to reading. It could, however, also reflect a more general dysfunction in the left inferior occipitotemporal cortex or in the time window of category-specific activation (150 to 200 ms). As ear

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy: comparison of conventional MR imaging with diffusion-weighted and diffusion tensor imaging: case report.

Conventional MR imaging, MR spectroscopy, diffusion-weighted imaging, and diffusion tensor imaging were performed in a 5-month-old male patient with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. On conventional T2-weighted MR images, symmetric, confluent high signal intensity was found in the temporoparietal white matter. A large lactate peak and decreased N-acetylaspartate were found in this region on proton MR spectroscopic images. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed increased apparent diffusion coefficient, representing vasogenic edema. Diffusion tensor imaging revealed decreased anisotropy, consistent wi

Functional delineation of the human occipito-temporal areas related to face and scene processing. A PET study.

By measuring regional cerebral blood flow using PET, we delineated the roles of the occipito-temporal regions activated by faces and scenes. We asked right-handed normal subjects to perform three tasks using facial images as visual stimuli: in the face familiar/unfamiliar discrimination (FF) task, they discriminated the faces of their friends and associates from unfamiliar ones; in the face direction discrimination (FD) task, they discriminated the direction of each unfamiliar face; in the dot location discrimination (DL) task, they discriminated the location of a red dot on a scrambled face.

[Clinical manifestation of frontotemporal dementia].

Frontotemporal dementia is a degenerative disease, usually of presenile onset, frequently with positive family history, whose main clinical features are early social and personal behavioral disturbances, cognitive defects mainly in attention, language and executive functions, personality disorders and blunt, unconcerned and subdepressive affect. Anatomic and functional neuroimaging shows atrophy and functional defects in anterior brain regions, and the EEG is persistently normal. Although frontotemporal dementia has been confounded with Alzheimer's disease for long time, it can be identified o

Brain imaging in a patient with hemimicropsia.

Hemimicropsia is an isolated misperception of the size of objects in one hemifield (objects appear smaller) which is, as a phenomenon of central origin, very infrequently reported in literature. We present a case of hemimicropsia as a selective deficit of size and distance perception in the left hemifield without hemianopsia caused by a cavernous angioma with hemorrhage in the right occipitotemporal area. The symptom occurred only intermittently and was considered the consequence of a local irritation by the hemorrhage. Imaging data including a volume-rendering MR data set of the patient's bra

[Fronto-temporal degenerative dementia. A modern neuropathologic approach].

The classification of degenerative dementias with fronto-temporal atrophy has been debated since the description of Pick's disease. The study of a clinico-pathological series of 10 cases using immunohistochemistry lead to the following conclusions: reserving the name of Pick's disease to those cases with argyrophilic inclusions, the most recognisable and characteristic marker at neuropathological examination, allows an easy and reliable diagnosis; keeping on with the splitting of these disorders into various clinico-pathologic entities seems today more useful than grouping them into a single s

Late-onset sporadic progressive subcortical gliosis.

We report two sporadic cases of progressive subcortical gliosis (PSG) with onset after age 60. The presentation included slowly progressive dementia with memory loss, geographic disorientation, and personality change. Both were diagnosed clinically as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and both met NINCDS-ADRDA criteria for probable AD. Autopsy revealed generalized atrophy, predominantly involving the white matter of the frontal and temporal lobes. Microscopically, prominent fibrillary astrocytosis was present in the subcortical white matter and in the subpial and deep layers of the overlying cerebral c…

Clustering of Pick bodies in patients with Pick's disease.

Clustering of Pick bodies (PB) was studied in the frontal and temporal lobe in 10 cases of Pick's disease (PD). Pick bodies exhibited clustering in 47/50 (94%) brain areas analysed. In 20/50 (40%) brain areas, PB were present in a single large cluster > or =6400 microm in diameter, in 27/50 (54%) PB occurred in smaller clusters (200-3200 microm in diameter) which exhibited a regular periodicity relative to the tissue boundary, in 1/50 (2%) there was a regular distribution of individual PB and in 2/50 (4%), PB were randomly distributed. Mean cluster size of the PB was greater in the dentate gyr…

The apolipoprotein E epsilon4 allele frequency is normal in fronto-temporal dementia, but correlates with age at onset of disease.

The apolipoprotein (apoE) epsilon4 allele was studied in fronto-temporal dementia (FTD), a diagnostic category including the specific disorders Pick's disease and frontal lobe degeneration of non-Alzheimer type (FLD). These dementing diseases have neuronal and synaptic degeneration in common with Alzheimer's disease (AD), for which the presence of the apoE epsilon4 allele is a known risk factor, and lowers the age of onset of disease. Previous studies on the apoE epsilon4 allele frequency in FTD have been inconclusive. The structural hallmarks of AD, allegedly linked to apoE presentation, neur

EEG reactivity correlates with neuropsychological test scores in Down's syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Down's syndrome patients express a neurodegenerative disorder and mental retardation. We studied the reactivity of EEG and its correlation with neuropsychological test score in Down's syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 32 patients with Down's syndrome and 31 controls for blocking of occipital EEG activity. The temporo-occipital EEG with eyes open (EO) was compared with resting EEG with eyes closed (EC), (EC/EO ratio). RESULTS: Both Down patients and controls showed significant diminution of alpha, beta and theta activity and decrease of EEG frequency with EO. However, t

A case of 'sign blindness' following left occipital damage in a deaf signer.

We report on a right-handed, deaf, life long signer who suffered a left posterior cerebral artery (PCA) stroke. The patient presented with right homonymous hemianopia, alexia and a severe sign comprehension deficit. Her production of sign language was, however, virtually normal. We suggest that her syndrome can be characterized as a case of 'sign blindness', a disconnection of the intact right hemisphere visual areas from intact left hemisphere language areas. This case provides strong evidence that the neural systems supporting sign language processing are predominantly in the left hemisphere

The frontotemporal region plays a role in the genesis of migraine without aura.

We have compared the migraine-inducing effect of nitroglycerin ointment applied to the frontotemporal region of the head, which is innervated by the ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the trigeminal nerve, with that of nitroglycerin applied to the chin (innervated by the mandibular division), the posterolateral region of the neck (innervated by the second and third cervical roots), the lateral surface of the proximal third of the forearm (innervated by the sixth cervical root), and the medial surface of the upper-arm region (second dorsal root). One hundred patients suffering from migraine

Visual hallucinations with written words in a case of left parietotemporal lesion.

A 15 year old ambidextrous patient presented with left temporoparietal lesions after head trauma. Seizures associated with visual hallucinations of written words arose six months later. Electroencephalography showed spike and wave complexes with phase opposition over the left parietal area. On MRI a post-traumatic porencephalic lesion was seen in area 7 and the superior part of area 39 of Brodmann; on T2 sequences, it was surrounded by a hyperecho predominating in the inferior part of the parietal lobe and extending in the posteroexternal temporal cortex. This first description of hallucinatio

Subdivisions and connections of auditory cortex in owl monkeys.

The organization and connections of auditory cortex in owl monkeys, Aotus trivirgatus, were investigated by combining microelectrode mapping methods with studies of architecture and connections in the same animals. In most experiments, portions of auditory cortex were first explored with microelectrodes, neurons were characterized as responsive or not to auditory stimuli, and best frequencies were determined whenever possible. Most recordings were in cortex previously designated as primary (A-I) and rostral (R) auditory fields (Imig et al. J Comp Neurol 171:111, '77) and in a newly defined ros

Pick's disease with Pick bodies: an unusual autopsy case showing degeneration of the pontine nucleus, dentate nucleus, Clarke's column, and lower motor neuron.

We report a 51-year-old female with Pick's disease with Pick bodies (PDPB) showing a brainweight of 530 g. This case was considered to be a very rare case of PDPB, in which the lesion developed in the temporal and frontal lobes and later spread to the parietal lobe, occipital lobe, brainstem, cerebellum and spinal cord. This case showed very atypical clinicopathological findings. Clinically, bulging eyes and myoclonus were observed. Neuropathologically, Pick bodies were widely distributed beyond the usual distribution areas to the parietal cortices, occipital cortices, dentate nuclei, motor ne

Frontal cortex hyperactivation and gamma desynchrony in Fragile X syndrome: Correlates of auditory hypersensitivity.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an X-linked disorder that often leads to intellectual disability, anxiety, and sensory hypersensitivity. While sound sensitivity (hyperacusis) is a distressing symptom in FXS, its neural basis is not well understood. It is postulated that hyperacusis may stem from temporal lobe hyperexcitability or dysregulation in top-down modulation. Studying the neural mechanisms underlying sound sensitivity in FXS using scalp electroencephalography (EEG) is challenging because the temporal and frontal regions have overlapping neural projections that are difficult to differentiat…

Autistic spectrum disorders in childhood epilepsy surgery candidates.

One third of children with autistic spectrum disorders (or pervasive developmental disorders) enter that state by regression from a more normal prior development at the onset of epilepsy or epileptiform abnormality in the electroencephalogram. In a very small proportion structural lesions of the temporal lobes are discovered. These form part of the sample of children coming to a surgical treatment programme. Ninety-eight child candidates for epilepsy surgery were seen by one neuropsychiatrist. Their psychiatric diagnoses were coded on DSM IV schedules. Other variables of interest were the age …
