Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 but Not Matrix Metalloproteinase-9, Implicated in the Manifestation of Chronic Periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition affecting the tooth's supporting tissues, resulting in gradual loss of periodontal ligament (PDL), alveolar bone, and gum resorption. Neutrophil and monocyte/macrophage, destructive proteases like matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 and MMP-9 play pivotal roles in such lesions in periodontitis. Therefore, this study aims to compare the level of MMP-3 and MMP-9 gene expression in patients with or without periodontitis in an Iranian population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 22 chronic periodontitis patients and 1

New Insights in Hydrogels for Periodontal Regeneration.

Periodontitis is a destructive inflammatory disease characterized by microbial infection that damages the tissues supporting the tooth (alveolar bone, gingiva, periodontal ligament, and cementum), ultimately resulting in the loss of teeth. The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is to achieve the regeneration of all of the periodontal tissues. Thus, tissue engineering approaches have been evolving from simple membranes or grafts to more complex constructs. Hydrogels are highly hydrophilic polymeric networks with the ability to simulate the natural microenvironment of cells. In particular, hyd

Multimodal Imaging of Dental Pulp Healing Patterns Following Tooth Autotransplantation and Regenerative Endodontic Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the healing process of dental pulp after tooth autotransplantation (TAT) and regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) of immature teeth is important both clinically and scientifically. This study aimed to characterize the pattern of dental pulp healing in human teeth that underwent TAT and RET using state-of-the-art imaging techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study examined 4 human teeth, 2 premolars that underwent TAT, and 2 central incisors that received RET. The premolars were extracted after 1 year (case 1) and 2 years (case 2) due to ankylosis, while the ce

Genetic insights into PHARC syndrome: identification of a novel frameshift mutation in ABHD12.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in ABHD12 (OMIM: 613,599) are associated with polyneuropathy, hearing loss, ataxia, retinitis pigmentosa, and cataract (PHARC) syndrome (OMIM: 612674), which is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease. PHARC syndrome is easily misdiagnosed as other neurologic disorders, such as retinitis pigmentosa, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and Refsum disease, due to phenotype variability and slow progression. This paper presents a novel mutation in ABHD12 in two affected siblings with PHARC syndrome phenotypes. In addition, we summarize genotype-phenotype information of

Berry as an adjunct to nonsurgical periodontal therapy: A clinical trial.

Periodontal disease, a persistent inflammatory condition affecting the tissues around the teeth, is brought on by an imbalance between dental biofilm and the host's reaction, with the potential for tooth loss. Periodontal disease has been linked to an excess of free radicals induced by oxidative stress or antioxidant deficiency. There is a notable oxidative process early in the course of periodontal disease, especially in periodontitis. The objective of the study is to assess if berry supplements can be used as a supplement to nonsurgical periodontal therapy. Forty individuals with chronic per…

Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells Differentiate into Cementoid-Like-Secreting Cells on Decellularized Teeth Scaffolds.

Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease that in some cases can cause tooth loss. Cementum is a mineralized tissue that forms part of the insertion periodontium and serves to fix the teeth to the alveolar bone. In addition, it acts as a reservoir of different growth and differentiation factors, which regulate the biology of the teeth. Cementogenesis is a complex process that is still under investigation and involves different factors, including dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP). In this work we studied the role of surface microtopography in the differentiation of human dental pulp stem c…

Clinico-microbiological Efficacy of Indocyanine Green as a Novel Photosensitizer for Photodynamic Therapy among Patients with Chronic Periodontitis: A Split-mouth Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional nonsurgical periodontal therapy, i.e., scaling and root planing (SRP), is not sufficient to completely eradicate the microorganisms present in dental plaque biofilm due to the incapability of instruments to reach the inaccessible areas of a tooth with anatomical variations. Hence, to increase the effectiveness of SRP, many adjunctive treatment strategies are proposed, including photodynamic therapy (PDT). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and microbiological efficacy of PDT using Indocyanine green (ICG) as a novel photosensitizer for the

Estimation and Correlation of Serum Albumin and Serum Alkaline Phosphatase Levels Between Smokers and Non-smokers With Generalized Chronic Periodontitis.

Background Periodontal disease is a chronic low-grade inflammatory disease triggered by periodontal microbial interaction present in the dysbiotic biofilm and the host's immune response further leads to the destruction of the supporting periodontal apparatus, which may, in turn, lead to tooth loss. Smoking is an environmental risk factor for periodontitis, and it enhances the secretion of various enzymes from host cells, which results in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. The albumin concentration is related to nutrition and inflammation. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), an enzy…

New World camelids are sentinels for the presence of Borna disease virus.

Borna disease (BD), a frequently fatal neurologic disorder caused by Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1), has been observed for decades in horses, sheep, and other mammals in certain regions of Europe. The bicoloured white-toothed shrew (Crocidura leucodon) was identified as a persistently infected species involved in virus transmission. Recently, BoDV-1 attracted attention as a cause of fatal encephalitis in humans. Here, we report investigations on BoDV-1-infected llamas from a farm in a BD endemic area of Switzerland, and alpacas from holdings in a region of Germany where BD was last seen in the

Esophageal Obstruction and Death in a Nonverbal Patient.

BACKGROUND: There are more than 100,000 cases of esophageal foreign body in the United States each year. Most cases resolve spontaneously; however, complete esophageal obstruction is a medical emergency. Patients with developmental disabilities are at high risk, because a large percentage of this population is effected by dysphagia, pica, tooth loss, or impulsive swallowing. In some cases, the diagnosis of esophageal foreign body can be made clinically, with the typical presentation including coughing, inability to tolerate secretions, drooling, vomiting, and dysphagia. In other instances, ima…

The effects of statins on dental and oral health: a review of preclinical and clinical studies.

The statin family of drugs are safe and effective therapeutic agents for the treatment of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Due to a wide range of health benefits in addition to their cholesterol lowering properties, statins have recently attracted significant attention as a new treatment strategy for several conditions, which are not directly related to normalizing a lipid profile and preventing CVD. Statins exert a variety of beneficial effects on different aspects of oral health, which includes their positive effects on bone metabolism, their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant p

Biocultural diversity in Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene Africa: Olduvai Hominid 1 (Tanzania) biological affinity and intentional body modification.

OBJECTIVES: The dentition of Olduvai Hominid 1 (OH1) exhibits an anomalous pattern of dental wear that was originally attributed to either intentional cultural modification (filing) or plant processing behaviors. A differential diagnosis of the wear and assessment of the biological affinity of OH1 is presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Macroscopic and microscopic observations of all labial and buccal tooth surfaces were undertaken to assess wear patterns. A multivariate analysis of mandibular morphology of OH1 compared to other Late Pleistocene, Holocene, and recent modern humans was used to as

Actinomycosis as a Rare Local Manifestation of Severe Periodontitis.

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection primarily caused by anaerobic gram-positive filamentous bacteria, primarily of the genus Actinomyces. Oral-cervicofacial actinomycosis is the localization found most often, presenting as a soft tissue swelling, an abscess, a mass lesion, or sometimes an ulcerative lesion. Periodontitis-like lesions, however, are rare findings. This report describes the case of a 41-year-old healthy female patient (nonsmoker), who was referred to the clinic with dull and throbbing pain in the second quadrant. Tooth 25 showed increased mobility and probing pocket
