Articulatory changes in muscle tension dysphonia: evidence of vowel space expansion following manual circumlaryngeal therapy.

UNLABELLED: In a preliminary study, we documented significant changes in formant transitions associated with successful manual circumlaryngeal treatment (MCT) of muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), suggesting improvement in speech articulation. The present study explores further the effects of MTD on vowel articulation by means of additional vowel acoustic measures. Pre- and post-treatment audio recordings of 111 women with MTD were analyzed acoustically using two measures: vowel space area (VSA) and vowel articulation index (VAI), constructed using the first (F1) and second (F2) formants of 4 poi

Effect of body position on lung sounds in healthy young men.

BACKGROUND: The effect of body position on the generation of abnormal respiratory sounds (eg, snoring and stridor) is well recognized. Postural effects on normal lung sounds have been studied in less detail but need to be clarified if respiratory acoustic measurements are to be used effectively in clinical practice. METHODS: Lung sounds and airflow were recorded in six healthy male subjects. Two acoustic sensors were placed over corresponding sites of the right and left chest, first anteriorly and then on the back. Subjects were studied in sitting, supine, prone, and lateral decubitus positio

The impact of preventive voice care programs for training teachers: a longitudinal study.

The teaching profession puts vocal health at a higher risk than other professions, causing what is referred to as "occupational dysphonia." There is a need for primary prevention of "occupational dysphonia" among the teaching profession, where good vocal health is promoted before a problem occurs. To investigate the primary prevention of occupational dysphonia among teachers, this study uses a sample population of 55 training teachers, in the postgraduate certificate of education (PGCE) course at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, who were randomly assigned to three training groups: c

Inputs from the cochlea and the inferior colliculus converge on olivocochlear neurones.

Medial olivocochlear (MOC) neurones, located in the superior olivary complex, can suppress cochlear gain by their action on the cochlear outer hair cells. Inputs from the contralateral cochlea and the inferior colliculus (IC) have been separately shown to increase activity of MOC neurones. In this study we have investigated in guinea-pigs under barbiturate anaesthesia the interactions between these two inputs by combining electrical stimulation of the IC with acoustic stimulation of the contralateral cochlea. Electrical stimulation of the IC resulted in a significant suppression of the amplitu

Linear accelerator radiosurgery for vestibular schwannoma.

OBJECT: The use of radiosurgery in the treatment of acoustic neuromas has increased substantially during the last decade. Most published experience relates to the use of the gamma knife. In this report, the authors review the methods and results of linear accelerator (LINAC) radiosurgery in 44 patients with acoustic neuromas who were treated between 1993 and 1997. METHODS: Computerized tomography scanning was selected as the stereotactic imaging modality for target definition. A single, conformally shaped isocenter was used in the treatment of 40 patients; two or three isocenters were used in

Effect of aggressive therapy on laryngeal symptoms and voice characteristics in patients with gastroesophageal reflux.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is associated with a variety of laryngopharyngeal signs and symptoms. Injury of the laryngopharynx as a result of GER can be refractory to conventional antireflux therapy. This prospective study was undertaken to evaluate the prevalence of laryngopharyngeal signs and symptoms in patients with documented GER and to assess the response to a high-dose combination antireflux therapy consisting of cisapride and pantoprazole. Twenty-two patients with symptoms of GER were enrolled. After baseline evaluation using a history questionnaire for symptoms, laryngeal endoscopy

Eavesdropping on insects hidden in soil and interior structures of plants.

Accelerometer, electret microphone, and piezoelectric disk acoustic systems were evaluated for their potential to detect hidden insect infestations in soil and interior structures of plants. Coleopteran grubs (the scarabaeids Phyllophaga spp. and Cyclocephala spp.) and the curculionids Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.) and Otiorhynchus sulcatus (F.) weighing 50-300 mg were detected easily in the laboratory and in the field except under extremely windy or noisy conditions. Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae) larvae weighing 1-12 mg could be detected in small pots of wheat in the laboratory b

[Middle ear function in children with cleft palate].

Middle ear problems in patients with cleft palate have for a long time received insufficient attention. The present study was designed to evaluate middle ear function in 56 children with cleft palate and in a control group of 50 children without cleft palate. The age ranging between 5 and 14 years was similar in both groups. All children underwent routine otoscopic examinations of ear, nose and throat, and were also examined using the Madsen acoustic impedance audiometer. Four major parameters (static compliance, middle ear pressure, acoustic stapedius reflex and Eustachian tube function) were

Analysis of the coil generated impulse noise in extracranial magnetic stimulation.

An intense impulse noise artifact is generated by the coil used in extracranial magnetic stimulation (EMS) of the brain and cranial nerves. In this study we measured and analyzed the sound pressure level (SPL), spectral content, wave form, and time course of the magnetic coil acoustic artifact (MCAA) impulse noise in the sound field and in the ear canal of life-size models of the human cranium. Two different clinical magnetic stimulators and coils were used. Sound field measurements from both coils showed the MCAA to be a transient impulse noise with a rapid rise-time, brief duration, broad ac

[A short history of hearing research. II. Renaissance].

The history of basic research on the function of the hearing organ is revisited. The present, second part of the review covers the period between the renaissance of anatomical research in the 16th century and the beginning of modern hearing research at the end of the 19th century. Andreas Vesalius gave the two ossicles malleus and incus their names. His scholar Philippus Ingrassia found 1546 the third ossicle, the stapes. The cochlea was discovered 1552 by Bartholomeus Eustachius and denoted as cochlea 1561 by Gabriel Falloppio. Thomas Willis speculated 1672 that different "tones" (species aud

Vertical line array observations of the angles of intromission into a layered shallow water seabed.

Bottom-reflected acoustic arrivals from muddy seabeds can exhibit incident grazing angle-dependent reflection loss associated with the angle of intromission. Previous studies investigated this phenomenon through bottom-reflection measurements on individual hydrophones. In this Letter, acoustic transmissions from a towed source in two mid-frequency bands (3.5-4.5 and 5.5-6.5 kHz) are analyzed using vertical line array hydrophones deployed on the Washington shelf. Weak bottom-reflected arrivals are observed, exhibiting more complex frequency-dependent behavior than predicted by a homogeneous mud

Matrix-product-state compression of quantum-encoded vocal-tract transfer functions.

Vocal-tract transfer functions are densely sampled acoustic representations, making direct quantum-state preparation costly. In this paper, we investigate whether their resonant structure permits compact quantum-compatible encoding. Transfer functions from the Dresden Vocal Tract Dataset are represented as 14-qubit amplitude states and compressed using matrix product states. The resulting states exhibit low cross-partition complexity, allowing a bond-dimension-eight representation to reduce storage by 13.7 times while retaining reconstruction accuracy close to the uncompressed finite-element r

Emerging Technologies to Track and Improve Sleep Health.

This review explores cutting-edge advancements, including wearable sleep trackers, brain age assessments, transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), acoustic stimulation, and glymphatic system modulation. Sleep trackers provide continuous monitoring of sleep patterns, while brain age estimation offers insights into brain health and early detection of accelerated aging. TES shows promise in improving mood, memory, and sleep. Acoustic stimulation during slow-wave sleep has been demonstrated to enhance memory consolidation. Additionally, optimizing the glymphatic system may facilitate brain waste

Observation of size-dependent thermalization in CdSe nanocrystals using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy.

We report heat dissipation times in semiconductor nanocrystals of CdSe. Specifically, a previously unresolved, subnanosecond decay component in the low-temperature photoluminescence decay dynamics exhibits longer decay lifetimes (tens to hundreds of picoseconds) for larger nanocrystals as well as a size-independent, ~25-meV spectral shift. We attribute the fast relaxation to transient phonon-mediated relaxation arising from nonequilibrium acoustic phonons. Following acoustic phonon dissipation, the dark exciton state recombines more slowly via LO-phonon assistance resulting in the observed spe

Cerebellopontine cistern: microanatomy applied to vestibular schwannomas.

The microanatomy of the cerebellopontine cistern (CPC) is of interest to many surgeons and has been the subject of controversial works especially concerning the study of the subarachnoid space in the internal acoustic meatus (IAM). The CPC lies in the cerebellopontine angle between the brainstem, cerebellum and petrous bone. It contains in its upper part the trigeminal nerve with the superior petrosal vein. The cochleovestibulofacial bundle occupies the middle portion and lies between the pontomedullary sulcus and the IAM. The glossopharyngeal, vagus and accessory nerves are located in the inf

The elastic constants and related properties of the energetic material cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) determined by Brillouin scattering.

The acoustic phonons of cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) have been studied using Brillouin scattering. The analysis of the acoustic-phonon velocities allowed determination of the complete stiffness tensor for this energetic material. The results are compared to other recent experimental and theoretical determinations of the RDX elastic constants, bulk moduli, and shear moduli. The observed ordering of elastic constants, C11>C22>C33, is qualitatively associated with a (001) cleavage plane and molecular packing. This interpretation is further corroborated by the linear compressibilities plot

Meningioma of the internal auditory canal.

Meningiomas are the second most common tumor to involve the cerebellopontine angle (CPA), but controversy exists as to whether they can arise within the internal auditory canal (IAC) or whether involvement of the IAC occurs secondarily by extension from the CPA. This paper reports on a patient with an enhancing IAC meningioma that then grew and on subsequent scans was found to involve the CPA. This case demonstrates that these tumors can arise within the IAC and can grow out to involve the CPA. These findings are discussed within the context of meningioma tumor genetics and the histologic evid

Sudden hearing loss and unstable angina pectoris.

Acute sudden sensorineural hearing loss has been extensively described in the literature and is a well recognized clinical entity. The exact etiology for this entity has been difficult to ascertain. Multiple etiologies have been promoted including infectious agents, vascular abnormalities, acoustic trauma, metabolic disorders, and autoimmune syndromes. In some cases, neoplasms such as acoustic neurinoma can be identified. On occasion, ototoxic medications are present in the history. Moulonguet and Gougelot have associated mitral valve prolapse, microemboli, transient hemiparesis and sudden hea

[Hemodilution therapy of acute inner ear damage].

Two independently conducted randomized clinical studies (sudden deafness; acute acoustic trauma) showed that in terms of hearing gain and the elimination of tinnitus low-molecular dextran 40 and 6% hydroxyethyl starch 40/0.5 do not produce any significant difference in therapy. Clear significant results were obtained with patients who suffered from acute acoustic trauma, when only NaCl-infusions were applied. Both rheologically effective substances show side effects, but they lie in the per-mil-range. On the grounds of measured clinical results we refuse zero or next to zero therapy of patient

Prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Between 1982 and 1986, osteogenesis imperfecta was diagnosed by ultrasound in seven fetuses. The known heterogeneity of osteogenesis imperfecta was confirmed by the prenatal ultrasonographic findings. Dependent on the type of osteogenesis imperfecta, the appearance of the limbs varied from severely shortened and broad, with very low echogeneity and absent acoustic shadow (type IIA), to only moderately shortened and thin, with almost normal echogeneity and acoustic shadow but clearly visible fractures causing angulation of the bone (types IIC and III). Ultrasonography offers the possibility to
