Spatial distribution models of seroreactive sheep to Leptospira spp. in Veracruz, Mexico.

Leptospirosis is an infectious zoonotic disease of special importance in tropical regions of the world and is closely related to climatic conditions. In Mexico, at least eight Leptospira serogroups are known to affect sheep, but little is known about their distribution. The aim was to analyse the spatial distribution of seroreactive sheep to eight serogroups of Leptospira spp. through ecological niche modelling from the state of Veracruz. We carried out a cross-sectional, multistage, and stratified epidemiological study, sampling 405 sheep in different regions of the state (north, center, and

A bead-based suspension array for the detection of Salmonella antibodies in pig sera.

BACKGROUND: Slaughter pigs are monitored for the presence of the zoonotic pathogen Salmonella, using both serology and bacteriology. ELISAs used to investigate pig herds are based on the detection of antibodies against components of the Salmonella cell envelope. Nearly all Salmonella isolates in food-producing animals are serovars of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica, distributed over various serogroups as determined by the composition of their lipopolysaccharide (LPS). ELISAs for Salmonella serology are usually based on serogroup B and C1 LPS, often combined with serogroup D or E LPS. A

Effects of anti-human neutrophil antibodies in vitro. Quantitative studies.

Opsonic, antiphagocytic, cytotoxic, and metabolic effects of homologous and heterologous antibodies against human neutrophils were analyzed by means of quantitative assays to facilitate detection of antibody activity, and to probe membrane function of these cells. Normal human neutrophils were purified by gradient centrifugation, sensitized with heat-inactivated antineutrophil antisera, and incubated with rabbit alveolar macrophages in balanced salt solution containing nitroblue tetrazolium. The macrophages engulfed sensitized neutrophils and reduced nitroblue tetrazolium to formazan in phagoc

[Efficacy of Spirolept vaccine against human leptospirosis as estimated by passive protection of laboratory rodents].

OBJECTIVE: This study had for aim to assess the serological response induced by the Spirolept vaccine against human leptospirosis. METHOD: A serological follow-up was made on 31 patients at a risk of occupational exposure. The antibody titers of vaccinated patients were assessed by MAT and ELISA. In a second step, vaccinal protection was studied in vivo by checking the seroprotective effect of the human sera injected in an animal model (Meriones unguiculatus) naturally susceptible to the disease. The passive protection was studied by comparing the death rate on five batches of animals to whic

A Diagnostic Scoring Model for Leptospirosis in Resource Limited Settings.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infection with significant morbidity and mortality. The clinical presentation of leptospirosis is known to mimic the clinical profile of other prevalent tropical fevers. Laboratory confirmation of leptospirosis is based on the reference standard microscopic agglutination test (MAT), direct demonstration of the organism, and isolation by culture and DNA detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. However these methods of confirmation are not widely available in resource limited settings where the infection is prevalent, and reliance is pla

Sulfatide-binding assay for von Willebrand factor. Detection of von Willebrand's disease without discrimination of vWD subtypes.

The appropriate diagnosis of von Willebrand's disease requires a panel of laboratory assays. Subclassification of a patient's von Willebrand's disease is also important as it will influence management. The minimal test panel should comprise an assay for factor VIII coagulant, assessment of von Willebrand factor antigen and at least one functional von Willebrand factor assay (collagen-binding assay and/or Ristocetin cofactor assay). This panel will provisionally determine whether von Willebrand's disease is present and whether the von Willebrand's disease provisionally detected is a qualitative

Prevalence of major infectious diseases in backyard chickens from rural markets in Morocco.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Raising backyard chickens is a common practice in Morocco, mainly in rural or periurban areas. Constraints due to devastating avian diseases have been recognized as a major limiting factor in backyard poultry production. Consequently, these flocks could potentially be implicated as reservoirs for poultry diseases. However, there is a considerable lack of information on disease prevalence in this production system, and the risk represented by these small flocks remains under debate. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence and identify related risk factors of a range

Genotyping of viable Toxoplasma gondii from the first national survey of feral swine revealed evidence for sylvatic transmission cycle, and presence of highly virulent parasite genotypes.

Feral swine are known reservoirs of various pathogens, including Toxoplasma gondii. Here, we report the first national survey of viable T. gondii in feral swine in the USA. We paired serological surveys with parasite isolation and bioassay to evaluate the prevalence and genetic diversity of these parasites. From 2012-2017, sera and tissues from 1517 feral swine across the USA were collected for the isolation of viable T. gondii. Serum samples were initially screened for antibodies to T. gondii, and then the tissues of seropositive feral swine were bioassayed in mice. Antibodies were detected i
