The need for a rapid method by which first responders can screen for the presence of spores in powder samples has been increased since the anthrax attack of 2001. The majority of powders that were sampled in the context of that attack were hoaxes and did not contain Bacillus anthracis. The large number of samples overwhelmed the analysis capacity of public health laboratories. The possibility of the survival of guinea pigs after the simultaneous administration of different doses of Bacillus anthracis virulent strain 81/1 in combination with both B. anthracis vaccine strain STI and heterologous bacilli (B. subtilis strain PAC) has been experimentally shown. On the basis of the results of these experiments suggestion has been made that the "survival phenomenon" is the process involving the lysosomal systems of polymorphonuclear and mononuclear phagocytes.

Spores of Bacillus megaterium ATCC 19213, Bacillus subtilis niger and Bacillus stearothermophilus ATCC 7953 were converted to fully demineralized, but viable, H forms by controlled acid titration. Thirteen strains among 3 species of entomopathogenic bacteria were tested against 3 medically important mosquito species in French Polynesia. Two strains of Bacillus thuringiensis were highly toxic to Aedes polynesiensis, Aedes aegypti, and Culex quinquefasciatus. Six of 7 strains of Bacillus sphaericus tested were highly toxic to Cx. quinquefasciatus but not to the Aedes spp. Clostridium bifermentans serovar. malaysia was more toxic to Ae. polynesiensis than to the other 2 species. Entomopathogenic bacteria merit field testing for larval mosquito control in French Polynesia.

Most media have been unreliable when used to determine the number of coagulase-positive staphylococci in meat pot pies in the presence of overwhelming numbers of Bacillus cells. Various metabolic inhibitors were tested to determine whether they would suppress the growth of Bacillus cells without appreciably affecting the staphylococcal growth. The use of Staphylococcus Medium No. 110 modified by the addition of 0.75 mM sodium azide appears to be practical for the isolation of small numbers of coagulase-positive staphylococci from frozen meat pot pies.
