Eradication of murine typhus fever in a rural area: preliminary report.

An attempt to eradicate murine typhus fever by control of rats and rat-fleas in rural foci was carried out in Georgia between July 1953 and May 1954. Anticoagulant rat poisons and DDT powder were the principal agents used. Rats were eliminated from 89% of rat-infested premises and satisfactory flea reduction was achieved.Although premises cleared of rats have become reinfested at a rate of 25% 10-18 months after clearance, typhus fever has apparently been eliminated. On the results reported, the authors believe that eradication of murine typhus fever from rural areas is economically and practi

Extending Service Beyond Active Duty: Generalizability of Rheumatoid Arthritis Research Conducted Among U.S. Veterans.

Biomedical research involving United States Veterans continues to advance healthcare beyond the Veterans Health Administration. This is particularly true in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), where Veteran-centric research has uncovered novel insights into pathogenesis, risk factors, and disease manifestations, informing clinical care and research across both Veteran and non-Veteran populations. This includes clinical trials and epidemiologic studies in cardiovascular disease, frailty, glucocorticoid use and complications, malignancy, medication adherence, mental health, metabolic comorbidity, mortali…

Equivalency Between the Generalized Bivariate Bernoulli Model Dependency Test and a Logistic Regression Model With Interaction Effects.

BACKGROUND: Binary endpoints measured at two timepoints-such as pre- and post-treatment-are common in biomedical and healthcare research. Th … dency analyses to more complex longitudinal binary data structures, broadening its applicability in biomedical research.

Cognitive, emotional, and behavioral considerations for chronic pain management in the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome hypermobility-type: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) hypermobility-type is the most common hereditary disorder of the connective tissue. The tissue fragility characteristic of this condition leads to multi-systemic symptoms in which pain, often severe, chronic, and disabling, is the most experienced. Clinical observations suggest that the complex patient with EDS hypermobility-type is refractory toward several biomedical and physical approaches. In this context and in accordance with the contemporary conceptualization of pain (biopsychosocial perspective), the identification of psychological aspects invol

Top 20 Research Studies of 2020 for Primary Care Physicians.

This article summarizes the top 20 research studies of 2020 identified as POEMs (patient-oriented evidence that matters), including the two most highly rated guidelines of the year on gout and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Regarding COVID-19, handwashing and social distancing through stay-at-home orders or quarantine measures are effective at slowing the spread of illness. Use of proper face masks (not gaiters or bandanas) is also effective at preventing trans- mission. This is important because the virus can infect others during the presymptomatic phase. Aspirin can no longer

Feasibility of a cardiovascular cohort in a Sub-Saharan Africa community: preliminary report of the pilot project TAHES (Tanvè Health Study) in Benin.

BACKGROUND: Faced with the growing burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) including atherosclerotic in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the development of appropriate prediction tools, based on large cohorts, appears useful for prevention. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the pilot project TAHES (Tanvè Health Study) was to explore the feasibility of a large cohort study focused on CVD and risk factors in Benin. METHODS: We implemented a prospective cohort over 2 years. The sample consisted of all people aged 25 years or older who had lived for at least the previous 6 months in the villages of Tanvè or D

A New Frailty Score for Experimental Animals Based on the Clinical Phenotype: Inactivity as a Model of Frailty.

The development of animal models to study human frailty is important to test interventions to be translated to the clinical practice. The aim of this work was to develop a score for frailty in experimental animals based in the human frailty phenotype. We also tested the effect of physical inactivity in the development of frailty as determined by our score. Male C57Bl/6J mice, individually caged, were randomly assigned to one of two groups: sedentary (inactive) or spontaneous wheel-runners. We compared the sedentary versus the active lifestyle in terms of frailty by evaluating the clinical crit

The citizen scientist: Community-academic partnerships through Translational Advisory Boards.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the effectiveness of engaging patient partners as "citizen scientists" in the research process to boost patient centered outcomes research in underrepresented populations. METHODS: Translational Advisory Boards in South Texas have effectively collaborated with University researchers to develop community-based patient centered research. Here we describe innovative approaches in research to engage patients and offer practical methods to enhance partnerships between patients and researchers to facilitate patient engagement. RESULTS: Three health issues identified by the T

Development of an internationally agreed minimal dataset for juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) for clinical and research use.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare autoimmune inflammatory disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality. International collaboration is necessary to better understand the pathogenesis of the disease, response to treatment and long-term outcome. To aid international collaboration, it is essential to have a core set of data that all researchers and clinicians collect in a standardised way for clinical purposes and for research. This should include demographic details, diagnostic data and measures of disease activity, investigations and treatment. Variables in ex

ProThera Biologics, Inc.: a novel immunomodulator and biomarker for life-threatening diseases.

ProThera Biologics is a development stage bio-therapeutics company in East Providence, Rhode Island. The company was founded in 2002 to focus on the critical role and commercial potential of Inter-alpha Inhibitor Proteins (IAIP) for treating acute life-threatening inflammatory diseases. The discovery research originated in the basic research laboratories of the co-founders, Yow-Pin Lim, MD, PhD, and Douglas C. Hixson, PhD, at Rhode Island Hospital, a Lifespan partner. The company is backed by the Slater Technology Fund and has received research grants from the Rhode Island State Science and Te

Translation in tobacco and drug abuse prevention research.

The purpose of this article is to describe the translation of research on tobacco and drug abuse prevention from basic science to program development to large-scale program dissemination, and from animal to human studies. Where relevant, continuity of translation is discussed by referring to two variables that have been studied for their potential relationship to drug use risk in both animals and humans: sensation and novelty seeking and low impulse control. Review of the research indicates relatively slow translation until the early 1990s. The authors recommend several mechanisms to promote m
