Development and validation of an Eating Disorders Symptom Impact Scale (EDSIS) for carers of people with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Family members of relatives with eating disorders experience high levels of distress due to the difficulties in their care giving role. However no measures have been developed to measure the specific impact that an individual with an eating disorder has on family life. The aim of this study was to develop a measure to assess the specific caregiving burden of both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A secondary aim was to examine whether this measure was sensitive to change. METHODS: A new scale, the Eating Disorders Symptom Impact Scale (EDSIS), was generated by a panel of clini…

Predicting the outcome of eating disorders using structural equation modeling.

OBJECTIVE: There is a need for models that predict accurately the course of mental disorders. METHOD: Eating-disordered female inpatients were assessed longitudinally at the beginning of treatment (t1), at the end of treatment (t2), at 2 or 3-year follow-up (t3), and at 6-year follow-up (t4). The sample consisted of 196 women with bulimia nervosa (BN) purging type, 103 women with anorexia nervosa (AN), and 68 women with binge eating disorder (BED; N=367). Confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis were used to predict the women's status at 6-year follow-up. RESULTS: The results for BN an…

Hedonic response to sucrose solutions and the fear of weight gain in patients with eating disorders.

Previous research has shown that patients with bulimia nervosa (B), anorexia nervosa, restricting type, or restrictive-anorectic (RA), and anorexia nervosa, binge eating, purging type, or anorectic-bulimic (AB) exhibit a reduced hedonic response to sucrose compared with control subjects. We hypothesized that this response could be linked to an excessive fear of weight gain rather than a decreased ability to experience pleasure. We therefore compared the hedonic responses to sucrose solutions in B, RA and AB women (n=20/group) in two different conditions: sucrose solution swallowed vs. sucrose …

Promoting positive body image and intuitive eating in women with overweight and obesity via an online intervention: Results from a pilot feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Body dissatisfaction and dietary restraint are established risk factors for eating disorders and are also prevalent in individuals who are overweight and obese. Studies have shown that online prevention programs can lower these risk factors. The aim of this feasibility pilot study was to estimate effects of a 12-week online health promotion and eating disorder prevention program in a sample of women with overweight or obesity, but without binge eating. METHODS: The program was evaluated in an uncontrolled pre-post-follow-upstudy over 12 months. Outcome measures were eating disorde

Diagnostic, clinical, and personality correlates of food anxiety during a food exposure in patients diagnosed with an eating disorder.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are characterized by high levels of anxiety, especially while eating. However, little is known about anxiety experienced during meals and specifically what other variables may impact such anxiety. OBJECTIVE: We sought to further quantify and understand the relationship between food anxiety, eating disorders, and related correlates (e.g., comorbid diagnoses, personality). METHODS: In the current study [N = 42 participants diagnosed with an eating disorder (n = 36 participants with anorexia nervosa)], we quantified anxiety before, during, and after a meal using dat

Mental nerve injury induces novelty seeking behaviour leading to increasing ethanol intake in Wistar rats.

OBJECTIVE: Dental treatment and orofacial surgeries may induce chronic neuropathic orofacial pain (CNOP). This kind of pain affects adaptability to environmental changes in both model animals and humans. Part of the adaptation process depends on the ability to distinguish between familiar and novel stimuli. CNOP induces novelty seeking behaviour as a deficit in environmental adaptation. Alternatively, novelty seeking is a sign for susceptibility to the development of substance abuse. Evidence shows that CNOP leads to alcoholism in animal models. The behavioural relationship between CNOP, novel

Examining social support, rumination, and optimism in relation to binge eating among Caucasian and African-American college women.

PURPOSE: Binge eating is a significant concern among college age women-both Caucasian and African-American women. Research has shown that social support, coping, and optimism are associated with engaging in fewer negative health behaviors including binge eating among college students. However, the impact of sources of social support (i.e., support from family, friends, and a special person), rumination, and optimism on binge eating as a function of race/ethnicity has received less attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between social support, rumination, and optimi

Effects of lisdexamfetamine in a rat model of binge-eating.

Binge-eating disorder is a common psychiatric disorder affecting ~2% of adults. Binge-eating was initiated in freely-fed, lean, adult, female rats by giving unpredictable, intermittent access to ground, milk chocolate over four weeks. The rats avidly consumed chocolate during 2 hr binge sessions, with compensatory reductions of normal chow intake in these sessions and the days thereafter. Bodyweights of binge-eating rats were normal. The model's predictive validity was explored using nalmefene (0.1-1.0mg/kg), R-baclofen (1.0-10mg/kg) and SB-334867 (3.0-30 mg/kg) (orexin-1 antagonist), which al
