Macrophages during infection with Trichinella spiralis in mice.

Behaviour of macrophages in experimental mice trichinellosis was investigated using the immunoenzymatic technique with monoclonal antibodies CD11b/CD18 within the framework of avidin-biotin-DAB. The maximum and earliest mobilization of macrophages 7 day post infection (dpi) was observed in the lamina propria of the intestinal mucosa. The highest level of macrophages in the muscles tissue was noted on day 21 of infection, however as early as in 28 dpi, their maximum level was observed inside the larval capsules. They line, especially between 35-42 dpi internal capsule surface.

Implantation in the posterior chamber without capsular support.

The relatively high incidence of complications of anterior chamber implants has encouraged ophthalmologists to implant in the posterior chamber, even in eyes without posterior capsules. A new surgical technique for implantation of posterior chamber lenses in the ciliary sulcus is described. Twenty posterior chamber lenses were implanted in eyes which had had intracapsular cataract extraction, with a follow-up ranging from three to 14 months (mean 7.4 months). Although no serious complications occurred in this small series, the safety and viability of this technique will be established with a l…

Interleukin 1-like activity in cystic lesions of the jaw.

Odontogenic cyst capsules were cultured in vitro and the culture media analysed for bone-resorption and interleukin 1-like activity. Five cysts synthesised a non-dialysable bone resorbing factor with significant interleukin 1-like activity. One specimen thought to be a cyst with little interleukin 1 activity proved to be antral lining. The results indicate that interleukin 1 may play an important role in cyst expansion by its direct effects on fibroblast proliferation and bone resorption and by stimulating prostaglandin synthesis in stromal fibroblasts of the cyst capsule.

CO2 laser laparoscopy in infertile women with endometriosis and women with adnexal adhesions.

One hundred twenty-four infertile women either with endometriosis (n = 70) or with adnexal adhesions (n = 54) were treated with the carbon dioxide laser used laparoscopically and were followed for 18 months. Removal of endometriotic implants, vaporization of endometrioma capsules, and lysis of adnexal adhesions was accomplished. Postoperative pregnancy rates were as follows: 57% for patients with endometriosis (mild, 62%; moderate, 52%; severe, 42%) and 57% for patients with adnexal adhesions. No serious complications requiring laparotomy were encountered. When performed, second-look laparosco…

Recurrent late-onset fibrotic capsular block syndrome after neodymium-yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser anterior capsulotomy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Capsular block syndrome is an uncommon complication that occurs after cataract surgery. It is characterized by capsular distension, anterior intraocular lens displacement, anterior chamber shallowing, and unexpected myopic shifts. We report a case of recurrent fibrotic capsular block syndrome with Elschnig's pearl-type posterior capsule opacification 10 months after neodymium-yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser anterior capsulotomy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old Asian man complained of decreased visual acuity 5 years after undergoing phacoemulsification with posterior chambe

Posterior capsular calcification without opacification of intraocular lens.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsular clarity is important for long-term visual gain. Postoperative visual acuity could be reduced due to posterior capsular or intraocular lens opacification, which occur months or years after cataract surgery. We report early occurrence of posterior capsular calcification without opacification of intraocular lens. CASE: We report the case of a 78-year-old male who had undergone phacoemulsification with implantation of hydrophilic intraocular lens (IOL) in the left eye for cataract. The patient was non-diabetic, and the surgical procedure was uneventful. On the third

Isocaloric liquid and solid meals induce comparable postprandial gastric motility: Implications for oral drug delivery assessed by real-time MRI.

Postprandial gastric motility critically influences the intragastric behavior of oral dosage forms and subsequent drug absorption. Combining real-time MRI with already established MR imaging, we compared an isocaloric liquid (Fresubin Energy) and a solid meal (egg-white sandwich) in twelve healthy volunteers, assessing gastric emptying, antral contraction frequency, propagation velocity, luminal occlusion, and the intragastric behavior of a non-disintegrating capsule. The water that was ingested together with the capsule, emptied rapidly along the Magenstrasse (stomach road), while no meaningf

Encapsulated neoplasms of the thyroid gland.

Encapsulated thyroid gland lesions, defined by complete or partial confinement within a fibrous capsule, are common findings in endocrine pathology but frequently pose diagnostic challenges. The primary difficulty lies in distinguishing benign, low-risk, and malignant neoplasms, particularly within the spectrum of follicular-patterned tumors. Accurate classification can be hindered by pitfalls such as differentiating true tumor capsule from peritumoral fibrosis, identifying capsular or vascular invasion versus reactive changes from preoperative fine-needle aspiration, and accounting for histol

The evaluation of the effect of Nd-YAG capsulotomy on posterior ocular vascular structures by Optical coherence tomography angiography.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine the changes in retinal, choroidal and optic nerve head vascular structures after Nd-YAG laser application due to posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery by Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: Fifteen eyes of 15 patients who have posterior capsule opasification and underwent Nd-YAG laser capsulotomy were included in the study. OCTA imagings of patients were made before and one hour, one week and one month later after the laser procedure. RESULTS: No significant change was determined before and after capsulotomy in macular th

Development of an immunochromatographic assay for the rapid screening of torasemide in health food.

Torasemide is a new loop diuretic agent added illegally to health foods for weight loss, which can result in serious health risks for consumers. A rapid and sensitive immunochromatographic assay for detection of torasemide (ICA) based on a new monoclonal antibody (mAb) was developed. The mAb IC50 for torasemide was 0.93 ng/mL, and the mAb did not cross-react with other analogues. In PBS, the cut-off value and limit of detection were 1 ng/mL and 0.11 ng/mL, respectively, with a linear range between 0.61 and 6.13 ng/mL. In slimming tablet and capsule samples, the cut-off value was 5 ng/g. Recove

Editorial Commentary: Interportal Capsulotomy for Hip Arthroscopy in Patients With Borderline Hip Dysplasia May Result in Inferior Outcomes: Periportal Capsulotomy May Reduce Hip Capsular Damage.

Management of the hip capsule remains an ongoing discussion in the field of hip arthroscopy. Interportal and T-capsulotomies remain the most common approaches to gain access to the hip during surgery, and biomechanical and clinical research supports repair of these types of capsulotomies. Less is known, however, about the quality of the tissue that heals at these repair sites during the postoperative period, particularly in the setting of patients with borderline hip dysplasia. The capsular tissue provides important joint stability to these patients, and disruption to the capsule can result in

An Updated Approach and Understanding of Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma.

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare subtype of T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is usually localized to the fluid and capsule surrounding a breast implant. There have only been <1,000 cases and 36 deaths reported to date and the average patient presents 7 to 10 years following initial breast implant placement. Most patients present with delayed seromas, a breast mass, capsular abnormalities, lymphadenopathy, or cutaneous masses. Unlike other forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, most cases are cured with surgery alone. The challenge of BIA-ALCL surrounds its

Piggyback miLOOP-assisted phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens scaffold in hypermature cataracts.

Hypermature cataracts with liquified cortex pose a higher risk for capsular complications due to a distended capsular bag, floppy posterior capsule, and absence of any cushioning epinucleus. Disassembly of a brunescent nucleus is more difficult because of the thickened, leathery posterior plate. Relying on mechanical forces, miLOOP nucleotomy reduces ultrasound time and is assured of bisecting the posterior nuclear plate. However, using this instrument with brunescent nuclei might impart significant stress on the zonular fibers and posterior capsule, particularly if there is no epinuclear shel

Small-Bowel Adaptation: A Case of Morphological Changes Induced by Teduglutide in Short-Bowel Syndrome With Intestinal Failure.

Teduglutide (TED) reduces the need for parenteral support (PS) in patients with short-bowel syndrome with intestinal failure (SBS-IF). It is a glucagon-like peptide-2 analog that improves absorption, induces the expansion of the absorptive epithelium in the small intestine, and may be used in patients with SBS-IF after a 6- to 12-month adaptation period, if PS is always necessary. We described the functional and morphological effect of TED in a 40-year-old female patient with SBS-IF due to Crohn's disease who underwent terminal jejunostomy after 12 months of drug exposition. Marked hypertrophy

The use of poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene) as a microshunt to treat glaucoma.

The InnFocus MicroShunt® is a minimally invasive glaucoma drainage microtube used to shunt aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the eye to a flap formed under the conjunctiva and Tenon's capsule. The safety and clinical performance of this device approaches that of trabeculectomy with mitomycin C, the current 'gold standard' treatment for advanced glaucoma. The invention of a new biomaterial called poly(styrene-block-isobutylene-block-styrene) or 'SIBS' is the enabling factor which led to the success of this product. SIBS is ultrastable with virtually no foreign body reaction in the body

A healthy patient with bilateral frozen hips preceding bilateral frozen shoulders: a cautionary tale.

Adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder (frozen shoulder) is a common disease characterised by spontaneous onset of pain and restriction of movement, followed by 'thawing', with complete or near-complete resolution. Adhesive capsulitis of the hip has been reported in around a dozen patients. This report describes an otherwise-healthy middle-aged woman with apparent sequential resolving adhesive capsulitis of all four ball-and-socket joints over a 9-year period, initially affecting each hip and then each shoulder sequentially. The likely hip diagnosis became clear only retrospectively with developm

Combining two imaging techniques is best to diagnose small-bowel Crohn's disease.

In most patients with Crohn's disease, diagnostic gastrointestinal lesions are located in the small bowel, which is not easily accessible to direct investigation. This commentary focuses on an article by Solem et al., which compared the utility of four primary small-bowel imaging modalities (CT enterography, ileocolonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, and small-bowel follow-through) in diagnosis of active small-bowel Crohn's disease. Capsule endoscopy had lower diagnostic specificity than the other techniques. This result, in conjunction with the need to perform preliminary small-bowel radiography to

Histopathology of the pterygium in population on Croatian Island Rab.

In the 1975-2004 period, 130 cases of pterygium were estimated, 83 males and 47 females, on a small island Rab. Island Rab is located in the north part of the Adriatic sea, which has very high index of sun radiation. Pterygium is usually histopathologically defined as a hyperplasia of conjunctival tissue, elastoid degeneration of subepithelieum and fragmentation of Bowman's membrane. Our histopathological findings in 73 eyes are following: conjunctiva with neovascularisation, leukocyte margination and subepithelial basophilic degeneration, proliferation of conjunctival tissue, acanthosis and s
