Interventions for Neural Plasticity in Stroke Recovery.

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, and enhancing neural plasticity is a central strategy in promoting functional recovery. This review examines a range of interventions that target plasticity to improve outcomes in stroke survivors. Neural plasticity is assessed using neuroimaging tools, such as fMRI, EEG, and fNIRS, as well as clinical scales, including the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Biomarkers, like brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), GABA, and nerve growth factor (NGF), are also useful for predicting patient outcomes. These tools o

A CODA effect: Executive control and spatial attention in bimodal bilinguals.

This study investigated whether lifelong bimodal bilingualism could enhance cognitive functioning in two nonlinguistic domains: executive control and visuospatial attention. Three groups participated in the study: bimodal bilinguals-hearing "children of deaf adults" (CODA) using Polish Sign Language and Polish spoken language, unimodal bilinguals (using two spoken languages), and monolinguals (using one spoken language). Participants performed two versions of the flanker task: a flanker task with different spatial gaps (stimulus eccentricities) between target and flanker stimuli, and an attent

I have the right to carry a backpack: access to the school of children and adolescents in paediatric palliative care in the Veneto Region (Italy).

BACKGROUND: This universal right of access to school applies to all children and adolescents, including paediatric palliative care (PPC) patients. PPC patients display several different levels of disability and cognitive impairment that pose challenges to school inclusion. Therefore, strategies to offer an efficient and tailored school experience that relies on the support of school assistants and support teachers are essential. METHODS: In this retrospective study, data of patients of school age (3–19 years) followed at the Paediatrics Hospice of Padua were collected cross-sectionally from cl

Neural substrates associated with the acquisition of fine finger force control.

BACKGROUND: Precise finger force control is essential for performing everyday tasks such as writing, buttoning, and eating. While the neurophysiological basis of cognitive skill learning has been extensively studied, much less is known about the neural mechanisms supporting the acquisition of fine motor skills involving finger force control. This study aimed to investigate changes in cortical oscillatory activity and event-related potentials (ERPs) associated with the acquisition of fine finger force control. RESULTS: Eighteen right-handed healthy young adults practiced a visual target-matchi

Necessary and sufficient knowledge enhanced collaborative logical reasoning in LLMs.

Large language models (LLMs) learn massive knowledge through pre-training, and they have demonstrated strong reasoning capabilities by leveraging the knowledge. However, LLMs often make mistakes due to the failure of using necessary and sufficient knowledge. The inadequate utilization of sufficient knowledge will lead to the incorrect conclusions due to the lack of important evidence. Unnecessary knowledge may mislead the LLMs into generating false reasoning paths. To tackle the above challenges, we propose a collaborative logical reasoning framework called CLR. We first utilize deductive reas

Frailty in Pulmonary Hypertension: A Multidimensional Comorbidity.

Pulmonary hypertension is a complex and irreversible pulmonary vascular disease with a significant impact on patients' lives. Pulmonary hypertension is categorized into five groups according to its etiology. Frailty is a multifaceted disorder that leads to physical, social, cognitive, and psychological decline. Several studies have linked a high occurrence of frailty to heart failure and chronic lung diseases, but the prevalence and impact of frailty in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) remain largely unexplored. At the molecular level, inflammation, oxidative stress, cellular senescence,

Effective Therapeutic Strategies to Prevent Frailty and Falls in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

Frailty and the consequent risk of falls represent significant challenges for community-dwelling older adults, often leading to severe injuries, functional decline, and loss of independence. Falls typically result from multiple interacting risk factors, many of which are modifiable through targeted interventions. This mini-review focuses on evidence from randomized controlled trials evaluating effective therapeutic strategies to prevent frailty and falls. Comprehensive assessment and management of modifiable risk factors have been shown to significantly reduce fall incidence. Key interventions

Multi input-Multi output 3D CNN for dementia severity assessment with incomplete multimodal data.

Alzheimer's Disease is the most common cause of dementia, whose progression spans in different stages, from very mild cognitive impairment to mild and severe conditions. In clinical trials, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) are mostly used for the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders since they provide volumetric and metabolic function information of the brain, respectively. In recent years, Deep Learning (DL) has been employed in medical imaging with promising results. Moreover, the use of the deep neural networks, especially Convolutional Neura

[A study on the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with motor imagery on brain function based on electroencephalogram and near infrared spectrum].

Motor imagery is often used in the fields of sports training and neurorehabilitation for its advantages of being highly targeted, easy to learn, and requiring no special equipment, and has become a major research paradigm in cognitive neuroscience. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), an emerging neuromodulation technique, modulates cortical excitability, which in turn affects functions such as locomotion. However, it is unclear whether tDCS has a positive effect on motor imagery task states. In this paper, 16 young healthy subjects were included, and the electroencephalogram (EEG)

Average treatment effects on binary outcomes with stochastic covariates.

When evaluating the effect of psychological treatments on a dichotomous outcome variable in a randomized controlled trial (RCT), covariate adjustment using logistic regression models is often applied. In the presence of covariates, average marginal effects (AMEs) are often preferred over odds ratios, as AMEs yield a clearer substantive and causal interpretation. However, standard error computation of AMEs neglects sampling-based uncertainty (i.e., covariate values are assumed to be fixed over repeated sampling), which leads to underestimation of AME standard errors in other generalized linear

Exercise-produced irisin effects on brain-related pathological conditions.

Exercise increases peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) expression, which in turn causes the fibronectin type III domain containing 5 (FNDC5) protein to be produced. This protein is then cleaved, primarily in skeletal muscle fibers, to produce irisin. When the mature FNDC5 is cleaved by proteases, Irisin - which is the fibronectin III domain without the signal sequence - is released. Resistance, aerobic, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) are recognized as forms of physical exercise that raise irisin levels, and insulin receptor phosphorylation

State of the Science: The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders.

Before the development of the Unified Protocol for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP), evidence-based treatment options for commonly co-occurring anxiety, mood, and related disorders consisted of numerous single-disorder protocols that shared many similarities, reflecting the overlap among these disorders themselves. The UP distilled common elements of cognitive behavioral protocols into a unified intervention directly targeting core temperamental features underlying these disorders of emotion, namely neuroticism and associated emotion dysregulation. The UP has since bec

Effects of inactivity and exercise intervention on brain-derived neurotrophic factor in mice: Comparison of kinetics in serum, skeletal muscle, and brain.

Exercise training increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression and improves cognitive function. However, the dynamics of BDNF during inactivity and the effects of exercise intervention on BDNF levels have rarely been examined. Therefore, we aimed to examine changes in serum, skeletal muscle, and brain BDNF levels under these conditions. Mice were divided into control (Co), cast immobilization (CI), reloading (RL), and exercise (Ex) groups. Muscle atrophy was induced by cast immobilization for 2 weeks in the CI, RL, and Ex groups. After cast removal, the RL and Ex groups underw
