Nocebo response in human models of migraine: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-way crossover trials in migraine without aura and healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Human models of migraine have been used for the past 30 years to test putative 'trigger' molecules and ascertain whether they induce migraine attacks in humans. However, nocebo effects using this model have never been systematically explored. OBJECTIVE: To assess the nocebo response rate in randomised clinical trials conducted at the Danish Headache Center, and in which human models of migraine were used. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed for studies of human models of migraine with a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-way cro

Therapeutic efficacy and immunoregulatory effect of Qiangji Jianli Capsule for patients with myasthenia gravis: Study protocol for a series of randomized, controlled N-of-1 trials.

INTRODUCTION: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease in which antibodies directly target components of the neuromuscular junction, causing neuromuscular conduction damage that leads to muscle weakness. The current pharmaceutical treatment for MG is still not ideal to address the problems of disease progression, high recurrence rate, and drug side effects. Clinical observations suggest that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can strengthen immunity and improve symptoms of MG patients, delay the progression of the disease, reduce or even prevent the need for immunosuppressive therapy wh

Impact of polypharmacy on oral health status in elderly patients admitted to the recovery and rehabilitation ward.

AIM: The oral health status of elderly adults has implications for general health problems. Polypharmacy for elderly adults is associated with an increased risk of potentially inappropriate medicines and many adverse drug events; however, no report has shown that polypharmacy itself is associated with complex oral problems. This study aimed to determine the association between polypharmacy and oral health status in patients admitted to the recovery and rehabilitation ward. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 471 patients (age: 81.9 ± 7.7 years, women: n = 346). Oral health status was

Pharmacokinetics and Ex Vivo Antimalarial Activity of Artesunate-Amodiaquine plus Methylene Blue in Healthy Volunteers.

High rates of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) failures in the treatment of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Southeast Asia have led to triple-drug strategies to extend the useful life of ACTs. In this study, we determined whether methylene blue [MB; 3,7-bis(dimethylamino)phenothiazin-5-ium chloride hydrate] alters the pharmacokinetics of artesunate-amodiaquine (ASAQ) and enhances the ex vivo antimalarial activity of ASAQ. In an open-label, randomized crossover design, a single oral dose of ASAQ (200 mg AS/540 mg AQ) alone or with MB (325 mg) was administered to 15 healthy Vietnames

Cognitive reserve and network efficiency as compensatory mechanisms of the effect of aging on phonemic fluency.

Compensation in cognitive aging is a topic of recent interest. However, factors contributing to cognitive compensation in functions such as phonemic fluency (PF) are not completely understood. Using cross-sectional data, we investigated cognitive reserve (CR) and network efficiency in young (32-58 years) versus old (59-84 years) individuals with high versus low performance in PF. ANCOVA was used to investigate the interaction between CR, age, and performance in PF. Random forest and graph theory analyses were conducted to study the contribution of cognition to PF and efficiency measures, respe

Impact of concurrent remifentanil on the sedative effects of remimazolam, midazolam and propofol in cynomolgus monkeys.

Drug-drug interactions can substantially change pharmacological effects of the individual substances involved. For the use of sedatives or anaesthetics, having knowledge of the extent and characteristics of such interactions is crucial for ensuring the proper protection of patients undergoing any kind of sedation. Remimazolam is a new ultra-short acting benzodiazepine that is currently under development for intravenous use in procedural sedation and general anaesthesia. It exhibits a fast onset and fast offset which enables a more rapid recovery than currently available drugs in that class, su

Association between kidney function, nutritional status and anthropometric measures in older people : The Screening for CKD among Older People across Europe (SCOPE) study.

BACKGROUND: Different mechanisms connect the nutritional status with the occurrence and the course of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The end-stage renal disease is complicated by catabolic inflammatory reactions and cachexia which leads to malnutrition (undernutrition). On the other hand, obesity is an important risk factor for the development and acceleration of CKD. METHODS: In the SCOPE study, community-dwelling persons aged 75 years and over, from 6 European countries and Israel were examined at the baseline phase. We assessed the relationship between anthropometric measures (Body Mass Ind

Impact of Compression Therapy on Cellulitis (ICTOC) in adults with chronic oedema: a randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Cellulitis represents a significant burden to patients' quality of life (QOL) and cost to the healthcare system, especially due to its recurrent nature. Chronic oedema is a strong risk factor for both an initial episode of cellulitis and cellulitis recurrence. Expert consensus advises compression therapy to prevent cellulitis recurrence in individuals with chronic oedema, however, there is little supporting evidence. This research aims to determine if the management of chronic oedema using compression therapy effectively delays the recurrence of lower limb cellulitis. METHODS AN
