Bronchogenic cysts are rare benign lesions that arise during embryogenesis of the primitive proximal intestine and are located primarily in the lung. They are lined with cuboid or columnar pseudostratified and ciliated epithelium and have elastic fibers, smooth muscle, bronchial glands and cartilage in their walls. Gastric bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare with very few reported cases. Symptoms are usually caused by compression. GIST is the main differential diagnosis and the treatment is surgical resection.

Blepharochalasis is a rare disorder of unknown etiology defined by loose, atrophic periorbital skin following recurrent episodes of eyelid edema. Characteristic histopathology shows complete absence of elastic fibers. The current case progressed after multiple episodes of crying, which may be related to matrix metalloproteinase dysregulation. This case offers further insights into the possible pathogenesis of blepharochalasis, paving the way for more targeted, disease-modifying therapies.

Puncturing the anterior capsule in a patient with a very soft lens, an elastic capsule, and/or deficient zonular countertraction can be challenging even with a sharp needle or blade. The crossed-swords, capsule-pinch technique capitalizes on opposing forces from 2 needles directed toward each other with a "pinch" of the capsule between their tips. This affords a controlled and facile puncture of the capsule without creating stress on the zonules or anteroposterior displacement of the lens.

Cutaneous mucormycosis is an uncommon disease and occurs mainly in immunocompromised patients. We report an immunocompetent infant who developed primary cutaneous mucormycosis at an intravenous line site secured with an arm board and elastic bandage. The isolate was identified as the zygomycete, Rhizopus sp. High mortality rates are reported with invasive mucormycosis; however, early identification of the causative agent and antifungal therapy led to complete cure of the lesions in the reported case.

Intracranial aneurysms are rare in early childhood and there is little published information on their histology. We report a young boy who died of subarachnoid haemorrhage, 29 months after coiling of a giant vertebrobasilar aneurysm. Histology of the aneurysm revealed intramural inflammation with giant cells and fragmentation of the internal elastic lamina. The findings highlight the need for detailed examination in such cases, to elucidate the pathogenesis and pathology of cerebrovascular aneurysms in this age group.

An 18-year-old man with a fracture of the mandibular symphysis and both condylar heads was treated by open reduction of the fractured symphysis and closed reduction of the fractures of the condylar heads. As the open-bite was not resolved by the operation, elastic traction was applied for three weeks, but there was no improvement. Finally, we gave radiofrequency treatment to the anterior bellies of the digastric muscle, after which the open-bite disappeared and at the follow-up examinations there was no recurrence.

Endocardial fibroelastosis is a disease characterized by a prominent proliferation of dense collagenous and elastic tissue in the endocardium with the occurrence of congestive heart failure and death in early life. There are, however, many recorded instances of infants surviving the initial illness and living up to or beyond puberty. The clinicopathological factors for good prognosis include the increase in myocardial mass of ventricle evaluated by ventriculography and the histopathologic evidence for compensatory myocardial cell hypertrophy in the biopsied myocardium.

We report two cases of trauma where a surgical airway was required. In both cases soft tissue swelling of the neck made modification of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) airway guidelines necessary. A gum elastic bougie was used to guide a standard endotracheal tube into a cricothyroidotomy incision and secure the airway. Slight departure from standard techniques may be required in difficult circumstances to achieve a definitive airway.

A 31-year-old man was admitted with a mass in the left scrotum. On palpation, the mass was elastic hard and hen's egg-sized. It was impossible to discriminate between testis and epididymis. Left high orchiectomy was performed under the diagnosis of left testicular tumor. Histopathologically, distinct arteritis was demonstrated in the epididymis. Since the patient showed no evidence of systemic disease or serological abnormalities, he was diagnosed to have localized polyarteritis nodosa.

In a series of experiments with pigs the completely obstructed renal pelvis was filled with Ringer's lactate at a constant rate of 2 ml/min. At various pressure levels lower than 50 mm Hg the relations pressure vs infused volume and pressure vs actual intrapelvic volume were repeatedly measured. It was concluded that the measurements were reproducible and that the pelvicalyceal system is -under these experimental conditions- a stable elastic unit.

This short note presents the results from experiments performed on an artificial heart valve, in particular, the aortic valve located at the exit of the left ventricle of the heart. The valve was tested in a full-scale elastic model of the arterial system, with a cam-piston unit duplicating the pumping action of the heart. The dependence of the arterial flow distribution on the angular orientation of the valve was investigated and it was found that there was no discernible influence of valve orientation on the arterial flow distribution.

A patient developed concomitantly chondritis of the two auricles, diffuse cutaneous vasculitis and actinic granulomas. Alterations in skin and cartilage were prominent in the elastic tissue. Anticollagen type II antibodies were absent from the serum and there was no deposit of immunoreactants in cartilages. In this form of relapsing polychondritis, the pathomechanism resembles that of diffuse actinic arteritis as proposed by O'Brien. It is concluded that relapsing polychondritis may represent a heterogeneous syndrome with regard to its pathogenesis.
