Effect of exercise devised to reduce arm tremor in the sighting phase of archery.

BACKGROUND: In archery training, side bridges are performed in a posture similar to archery shooting for training the muscles around the shoulder joint and the shoulder girdle of the pusher. AIM: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a low-tremor side-bridge exercise for 4 weeks improves bow tremor during archery movements. METHODS: Participants were 20 male college students. First, we measured the tremor during side bridges performed with trunk inclinations of 25°, 40°, 55°, and 70° using an accelerometer attached to the elbow joint and identified low-tremor side bridges. The p

The influence of impact source on variables associated with strain for impacts in ice hockey.

Concussion can occur from a variety of events (falls to ice, collisions etc) in ice hockey, and as a result it is important to identify how these different impact sources affect the relationship between impact kinematics and strain that has been found to be associated to this injury. The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between kinematic variables and strain in the brain for impact sources that led to concussion in ice hockey. Video of professional ice hockey games was analyzed for impacts that resulted in reported clinically diagnosed concussions. The impacts were reco

Bullet in tracheobronchial tree without lung contusion removed by fibreoptic bronchoscopy in two parts.

A person presented with multiple gunshot injury. Chest x-ray & CT whole body trauma protocol was done which showed multiples pellets of bullet in abdomen and one bullet in elbow according to entry wound. There was an entry wound without any bullet in left maxillofacial region however there was no exit wound. A bullet was noticed in tracheobronchial tree. There was no pneumothorax any signs of chest trauma or any pneumomediastinum. It is assumed that the bullet first hit the left cheek (maxilla) and lost its momentum. As the patient lost consciousness and had a fall leading to inhalation (aspir

Intercondylar fracture of the distal humerus in a 7-year-old child: A case report and a review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Intercondylar fracture of the distal humerus is an extremely rare injury in children, especially in those under 8 years of age. To our best knowledge, there have been 55 reported cases of this fracture type in children in the English literature, 12 of which involved children under 8 years of age. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a case of intercondylar fracture of the distal humerus in a7-year-old boy fell in a gymnasium, injuring his left elbow. INTERVENTIONS: Closed reduction was initially attempted under fluoroscopic guidance, but anatomic reduction could not be achieved because the

Repositioning of the Annular Ligament in the Management of Missed Monteggia Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Successful treatment of missed Monteggia fractures usually requires ulnar osteotomy and open reduction of the radial head with reconstruction of the annular ligament. We have observed cases in which the annular ligament was displaced into the joint but remained intact. Here we report our experience with repositioning of the annular ligament at the time of the open reduction rather than reconstruction in the management of missed Monteggia fractures. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 23 patients with missed Monteggia fractures treated by repositioning of the annular. There were 1

Intra-Operative Bone Stability Test.

Fractures of the supercondylar humerus are the most common elbow fracture in pediatrics. Management of this injury would be aided if surgeons could reliably test fracture stability intraoperatively after pinning. A transverse supracondylar humerus fracture model was created using 3 adult cadaver upper-extremity specimens with an intact soft tissue envelope. Using the lateral entry technique, three 2.0 mm pins were then drilled using lateral entry technique to create an "A" pinning. Pins were checked in anteroposterior and lateral views with the C-arm to confirm accurate placement in both plane

Rheumatoid arthritis in review: Clinical, anatomical, cellular and molecular points of view.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common chronic autoimmune disease of the joints affecting close to 0.5-1.0% of the general population. Although the etiopathogenesis of RA remains elusive, the involvement of dendritic cells and type 17 T-helper cells appears to be pivotal in maintaining a state of chronic inflammation. RA is generally characterized by small joint involvement. A chronic inflammatory process leads to joint destruction and to tendon and ligament laxity and disintegration. These processes result in an imbalance of forces acting on the joints causing joint deformities includin

Internal Fixation With Absorbable Rods for the Treatment of Displaced Radial Neck Fractures in Children.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of radial neck fractures with complete displacement or severe displacement and an angle of >30 degrees is controversial. The currently used methods, including the Metaizeau technique, are associated with drawbacks such as imperfect reduction, epiphyseal damage, and delayed functional recovery. To overcome these drawbacks, we used absorbable rod fixation followed by early functional training for the treatment of displaced radial neck fractures in children. METHODS: In this study, 68 patients (age, 4 to 12 y; average, 8.4 y; average angle, 58 degrees; average displacem

Feasibility of an Exoskeleton-Based Interactive Video Game System for Upper Extremity Burn Contractures.

BACKGROUND: Burn contractures are common and difficult to treat. Measuring continuous joint motion would inform the assessment of contracture interventions; however, it is not standard clinical practice. This study examines use of an interactive gaming system to measure continuous joint motion data. OBJECTIVE: To assess the usability of an exoskeleton-based interactive gaming system in the rehabilitation of upper extremity burn contractures. DESIGN: Feasibility study. SETTING: Eight subjects with a history of burn injury and upper extremity contractures were recruited from the outpatient cl

Thumb proximal phalanx reconstruction with nonvascularized corticocancellous olecranon bone graft.

Large segmental bone defects of the phalanges reportedly have been treated with free vascularized grafts from the hand, foot, or knee, or with nonvascularized grafts from the iliac crest. A nonvascularized structural corticocancellous graft from a local site would be advantageous. The olecranon has been used as a source of both cancellous and corticocancellous graft. The authors describe a unique case of the use of nonvascularized corticocancellous olecranon bone graft for structural purposes in a mutilating thumb injury. The patient injured the left thumb with a miter saw, resulting in a larg

Musculoskeletal load in and highly repetitive actions of animal facility washroom employees.

Regular work tasks in the washroom of laboratory animal facilities include cleaning of cages and bottles and handling of chow and bedding. These operations largely are carried out by hand. We quantitatively determined the musculoskeletal load on the trunk and upper limbs of washroom employees in an animal facility with a holding capacity of 35,000 rodent cages by using a computer-assisted, quantitative, recording, and long-term analysis (CUELA) system, which volunteers wore during routine work. Parallel video recording allowed exact assignment of each movement of body and limbs to the data rec

Effects of hand cycle training on wheelchair capacity during clinical rehabilitation in persons with a spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of a structured hand cycle training programme on physical capacity in subjects with spinal cord injury (SCI) during clinical rehabilitation. METHOD: Twenty subjects with SCI who followed hand cycle training were compared with matched control subjects from a Dutch longitudinal cohort study, who received usual care. Primary outcomes of physical capacity were peak power output (PO(peak)), peak oxygen uptake (VO₂(peak)) and oxygen pulse during a hand rim wheelchair test. Secondary outcome measures were isometric peak muscle strength of the upper extremities and pu

Differential tactile and motor recovery and cortical map alteration after C4-C5 spinal hemisection.

After incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI), the adult central nervous system is spontaneously capable of substantial reorganizations that can underlie functional recovery. Most studies have focused on intraspinal reorganizations after SCI and not on the correlative cortical remodeling. Yet, differential studies of neural correlates of the recovery of sensory and motor abilities may be conducted by segregating motor and somatosensory representations in distinct and topologically organized primary cortical areas. This study was aimed at evaluating the effects of a cervical (C4-C5) spinal cord hem

Transcorporeal approach for disc herniation at the C2-C3 level: a technical case report.

The authors describe a less invasive approach for a disc herniation at the high cervical region. A 68-year-old female patient presented with posterior neck and shoulder pain, and tingling sensation and numbness in the left hand after she fell down stairs 2 months before presentation. On neurologic examination, the power of flexion and extension of the left elbow and grasping of the left hand was decreased. Hoffmann sign was positive in both hands. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a huge herniation of the C2-C3 disc compressing the left paramedian area of the spinal cord. After a routine surgi

[Pediatric scaphoid fractures--treatment and prognosis].

From 1990 to 1994, we treated 28 children aged eight to fourteen years, with a scaphoid fracture. In eight of them, the initially suspected fracture could not be verified by X-ray earlier than two weeks after the injury. Eleven more patients--after false initial suspect of fracture--were discharged after two weeks without any complaints and negative X-ray control. These were not included in the series. Patients with radiologically evident fracture or clinically typical history and symptoms of scaphoid fracture--even without positive X-ray--were treated by below-elbow-thumb spica-cast for two w
