Specimens for chlamydial culture, direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) test, two enzyme immunoassays (EIA) for antigen detection, and serum for chlamydial antibodies were collected from 256 infertile women. Malignant mixed müllerian tumor is an uncommon gynecologic neoplasm, especially in the oviduct, where fewer than 30 have been described. We report two additional cases which clinically mimicked carcinoma of the oviduct. Differential-diagnostic value of various clinical and laboratory tests was assessed in 105 patients with acute nonspecific salpingo-oophoritis. Auxiliary methods, such as cytochemical studies of neutrophil alkaline phosphatase, lymphocyte acid phosphatase, lymphocyte glycogen and lymphocyte succinate dehydrogenase, as well as the identification of auto-organic antibodies to the enosalpinx and ovarian tissue, were used to assess the severity of the condition. Their diagnostic value is stated with reference to the severity of adnexal inflammation.

Oocyte recoveries for in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer were performed in 82 cycles in 73 women. The status of the ovaries was unknown. Uterine horn pregnancies are rare among ectopic pregnancies. Total salpingectomy with resection of the interstitial portion of the tube is usually recommended in order to prevent implantation in the interstitial stump. Twenty sows were examined as part of an investigation into the relative importance of the genital and urinary tracts as sites of leptospiral persistence in pigs. The sows had previously either aborted leptospire-infected fetuses or aborted on farms where leptospire infection had been demonstrated in other litters. Postoperative ascites in patients receiving intraperitoneal dextran 70 may result from slow absorption. We tested this by instilling 250 ml of dextran 70 into the peritoneal cavity of patients undergoing tuboplasty. Serum dextran levels were undetectable until 24 hours after operation and rose during the next 4 days. Ascites in patients with intraperitoneal dextran 70 results from third spacing in response to the persistent osmotic load.

Brief freezing of the ovarian vascular pedicle in rats reduced ovarian noradrenaline concentration, measured with HPLC, by 67% (P less than 0.01). Freezing of the ovarian suspensory ligament caused a 22% reduction (P less than 0.01) and 33% reduction (P less than 0.05) in 2 experiments. During the years 1971-1980, genital tuberculosis was found in seven patients examined for infertility at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Turku University Central Hospital. None of these patients had a previous history of tuberculosis manifestations. Chest X-ray examinations were normal for all patients. Six of the patients had tuberculous endometritis.
