The report concerns a two-month-old suckling, affected on the 20th day of life with occurrence of icterus, dark urine and acholic stool, and … area. The serious postoperative course, characterized by progressive hepatic failure, results in a fatal outcome on the third postoperative day. The etiopathogenesis, clinical symptomatology, timely diagnosis and effective operative management of this exceptionally rare surgical disease in children are discussed against the background of pertinent literature d …

In June 1993 an unusual coccidian parasite was identified in lung tissue from a northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), collected near Tucson, Arizona (USA), which died in respiratory distress. Histologically, there was evidence of severe, generalized interstitial pneumonia, associated with the parasite. Both asexual and sexual stages were seen. Schizonts, gamonts, and sporulated oocysts were seen in lung tissue. The parasite most closely resembled coccidia of the genus Lankesterella. This is the first report of such a coccidian parasite in the alveolar tissue of a cardinal.

Coronary sinus thrombosis was found at autopsy of a boy who had undergone intracardiac repair of tetrology of Fallot. During the operation persistent left superior vena cava was cannulated through the right atrium via the coronary sinus. There was also evidence of myocardial infarction in the region of the interventricular septum.

A case study is reported of incomplete excision of a sessile leiomyoma of the posterior cervix followed by rapid tumor growth of the same region in a pregnancy commencing 2 months later. Cesarean section for placenta previa was followed 10 days later by hysterectomy for massive hemorrhage. The tumor was considered, following multiple review, to be a leiomyoma of the cervix with mitosis consistent with recent pregnancy. Widespread peritoneal recurrence occurred within 3 months requiring further laparotomy for excision of widespread tumor and ligation of internal iliac arteries. Death occurred 4

The recurrence of interruption of aortic arch (IAA) in siblings is rare. According to previous reports concerning siblings with IAA, all cases were IAA type B according to the classification proposed by Celoria and Patton. In this report we present the first cases of brothers with IAA type A. The type of IAA was confirmed by autopsy findings in the elder brother and by operative findings in the younger brother. The etiology of IAA was unclear. Monogenic inheritance was thought unlikely because congenital heart disease was not recognized in other members of the family. It would seem prudent to

Injuries account for more deaths and hospital admissions among children and adolescents than all diseases combined. The authors report two deaths by asphyxiation that resulted from drawstrings on the children's clothing becoming entangled on slides. Although such incidents are not common, they are preventable. The authors urge physicians to counsel parents and guardians to remove drawstrings from children's clothing, and they call upon the government and the clothing industry to work toward improving the safety standards for the design, manufacture and importation of children's clothing and ba

We report a patient with high anorectal anomaly and accessory scrotum. To the best of our knowledge only four other similar cases have been described. The patient also had renal dysplasia, partial prune-belly syndrome, and dismal outcome because of urinary septicemia. To our knowledge, accessory scrotum, high anorectal anomaly, and prune-belly syndrome in the same patient has never been reported.

This paper reports on a fatal intoxication by oral ingestion of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). At admission, the victim was unconscious. His condition deteroriated rapidly with blood loss from his mouth and nose. Since the cause of this condition was not known, gastroscopy was performed and haemorrhagic mucosa was observed in the mouth, oesophagus and stomach. Gastric contents (removed by lavage), urine and blood were submitted for toxicological analysis. Unfortunately, within 3 h of admission (about 5 h following ingestion of the toxin) profound cardiogenic shock develo

Haemorrhage from oesophageal varices is a common and potentially life-threatening complication of portal hypertension, which is usually due to cirrhosis of the liver. Although liver metastases and hepatic dysfunction frequently occur in malignant disease, reports of oesophageal varices arising as a consequence of metastatic liver disease are sporadic, suggesting that this complication is unusual. Indeed, one review of the literature identified only 23 cases, although a few others have subsequently been reported. The management of such patients bleeding from oesophageal varices is clearly very

The case of a persistent primitive hypoglossal artery (PHA) in a 72-year-old man dead from myocardial infarction is presented. The autopsy showed the presence of a semicircular marginal infarct on the surface of the left cerebral hemisphere. The PHA anastomized the basilar artery origin with the left internal carotid artery, running through the left hypoglossal canal together with the hypoglossal nerve. The vertebral and posterior communicating arteries were hypoplastic. The PHA represented the morphological base on which the cerebral vascular insufficiency acted, following the generalized cir

BACKGROUND: Whiplash injuries are generally seen after rear-end rather than frontal car collisions. Previous reports have documented death up to 8 days after serious whiplash injury. We report a case of lethal basilar thrombotic embolus that occurred 2 months after the patient's injury in a collision.
CASE DESCRIPTION: After whiplash trauma in a car accident, a 50-year-old taxi driver suffered from headache and episodic visual disturbances. Two months after the accident he suddenly lost consciousness and was admitted to the hospital. A CT scan performed at that time was indicative of basilar

Class I Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is described in a two- and a half-year-old male. The initial expression of the disease was conspicuous by the presence of extensive pustular crusted rash and, later in its course, by purpura, diabetes insipidus, otitis media, enlargement of the liver and spleen, and infiltration into the lungs. The patient expired due to extensive hemorrhage over 24 hours.

A 50 y.o. male presented with a right parietal tumor which was a glioblastoma on stereotactic biopsy. He was treated by radiation and steroids, with clinical improvement. Four months later, he presented with a left preauricular mass and cervical lymphadenopathy. CT scan showed destruction of the left mastoid and filling of the left tympanic cavity. One month later, he suffered progressive dyspnea. Chest X ray showed a mediastinal mass on the right side and numerous bilateral interstitial opacities in the lungs. A bronchial biopsy was inconclusive. His general condition worsened, and he died. P

Small bowel diverticulosis (SBD) have the lowest incidence of diverticulosis of the alimentary tract. The incidence differs from 0.09% to 2.3% depending on the reporting physician. SBD are pseudodiverticula, consisting of mucosa only. The causes of SBD are not clear, but the "locus minoris resistentiae" theory is most widely accepted. Overactive or irregular peristalsis bulges the mucosa out through vascular defects in the bowel wall. Only meticulous radiographic techniques can lead to a diagnosis. Preoperative diagnosis is exceptional. SBD can produce chronic abdominal discomfort. Acute compl

A 63-year-old, Dutch, HIV-seronegative man presented with anal pain and itch of 6 months' duration, a perianal ulcer and a solitary colon ulcer. Crohn's disease was suspected; the patient was treated with corticosteroids, but later died. Autopsy revealed disseminated histoplasmosis, a fungal disease rare in the Netherlands. The patient had visited Honduras. This case report illustrates that disseminated histoplasmosis may mimic Crohn's disease leading to a delay in the diagnosis.
