Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is often regarded as one of the most successful surgical techniques developed in the twenty-first century. However, it is associated with complications such as prosthetic instability, dislocations, or infections. Dual-mobility (DM) implants have been developed with the goal of reducing the incidence of dislocations by increasing the femoral head-neck ratio, maximising hip stability, and improving the range of motion (ROM) before impingement and dislocation. This systematic review aims to comprehensively compare the safety and efficacy of DM versus fixed-bearing (FB

BACKGROUND: Treatment of patients with Crowe type III and IV dislocated hips is challenging because of the hip deformity in these patients. In addition to the usual total hip replacement, shortening and reduction of the femur are often required. We herein report on our surgical technique using a monoblock cylindrical cementless stem and a direct lateral approach.
METHODS: This study included patients with a diagnosis of severe developmental dysplasia of the hip (Crowe types III and IV) who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty at our hospital from August 2019 to January 2022. Eleven hips o

BACKGROUND: Nonmodular dual mobility (DM) articulations in total hip arthroplasty (THA) aim to reduce dislocations through a large outer bearing diameter while minimizing wear via a smaller inner bearing where most motion occurs. Although routine use remains uncommon in the United States, this construct may protect against dislocation. This study aimed to evaluate clinical outcomes of a cementless, nonmodular DM acetabular cup at a mean follow-up of two years.
METHODS: We conducted a single-arm retrospective review of 604 primary, elective THAs using a cementless nonmodular DM acetabular cup

BACKGROUND: Neglected traumatic hip dislocation in children is uncommon and there is no consensus on appropriate management. Previous studies report varied operative management with high rates of avascular necrosis and postoperative subluxation/dislocation. We report a series of 7 consecutive cases who underwent operative reduction after neglected hip dislocation and describe our technique for treatment.
METHODS: All 7 children sustained posterior dislocations and had no treatment before presentation at our institution. An associated marginal acetabular fracture was present in 2 cases. One ad

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the results of the use of a jumbo femoral head to restore stability in hips that had sustained recurrent dislocations after total hip replacement.
METHODS: Twelve hips in twelve patients who had had multiple hip operations and recurrent instability of the hip underwent a total hip replacement with use of a femoral head with an average diameter of 44 mm (range, 40 to 50 mm). The average age of the patients was fifty-nine years (range, twenty-nine to eighty-four years). The twelve patients had had an average of four previous operations (range,

BACKGROUND: Lateral dislocation of the patella is a common injury in children. It can occur in previously healthy and anatomically normal knees, but there are several abnormalities that predispose to patellar instability. Magnetic resonance imaging is an essential part of assessing for associated injuries and risk of further instability. Treatment aims to prevent redislocation, residual instability, osteoarthritis, and allow return to previous activities. The purpose of this review was to assess evidence for management of first-time patella dislocation in children and adolescents.

Skiing as a sport has come a long way from the first competitive event in Norway in 1767 to about 200 million skiers today worldwide. With Germany alone recording around 8000 injuries annually, there is an increased need for awareness for winter-sport-related injuries and their management. According to the latest report by "Auswertungsstelle für Skiunfälle" (ASU, evaluation center for ski accidents), shoulder injuries alone account for more than 20% of injuries to all body regions (men 26.1% and women 13%). The most common injuries affecting the shoulder girdle are rotator cuff strains, glenoh

Complex fracture dislocations of the wrist often result in post-traumatic arthrosis. In these cases, patients can experience severe pain and loss of function of the wrist and as a result many of them end up having a total arthrodesis. In trying to avoid the disadvantages of a total arthrodesis, alternative treatment strategies have been investigated, amongst which proximal row carpectomy (PRC). Basic conditions for a good outcome of PRC are an intact cartilage of the lunate fossa of the distal radius and an intact surface of the head of the capitate for the new radiocapitate joint (, schematic…

BACKGROUND: Injury of the brachial artery is a rare (5-13%) but serious complication after closed elbow dislocation without associated fractures.
METHOD: Retrospective analysis of long-term results (mean, 4.1 years) in four patients.
RESULTS: All patients underwent emergency repair of the arterial injury within 2.5 hours. In three patients, a reversed saphenous vein graft was used; in one patient the artery was sutured. This latter patient needed another operation with interposition of a reversed saphenous graft, because the primary anastomosis occluded. The capsule and the collateral ligame

Four hundred seventy-three consecutive cementless cruciate retaining meniscal bearing primary total knee replacements were done on 375 patients from May 1985 to February 1991. These were observed for a 10-year period (average, 5 years). Seventeen (3.6%) required change of components because of mechanical failure. There were 12 polyethylene fractures or dislocations. There were 5 tibial subluxations secondary to ligamentous instability occurring at an average of 21 months postoperatively. There were 2 component loosenings secondary to bone graft resorption (1 femoral, 1 tibial). There were 5 in

INTRODUCTION: Complex intra-articular distal radius fractures with severe comminution or fragment rotation may be difficult to reduce using conventional fixation. We describe a dorsal salvage strategy, the Marseille Approach for Radius Salvage (MARS), enabling direct articular visualization in selected cases.
HYPOTHESIS: The MARS strategy allows reliable reduction and acceptable short-term functional outcomes in fractures not amenable to standard fixation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single-center prospective case series (May 2021-October 2025). CT assessed reduction quality (step-off ≤ 2 mm). Fu

The pelvic ring is a closed, ring-shaped skeletal framework composed of the sacrum and paired innominate bones, stabilized by strong ligaments. It plays a critical role in weight transmission and provides protective enclosure for vital internal organs. Injuries of the pelvic ring represent a broad spectrum of injury severity, ranging from stable fractures to life-threatening unstable fracture-dislocations. Disruption of this ring can injure major vascular, neural, and genitourinary structures, with hemorrhage remaining a leading cause of preventable mortality in pelvic trauma. Although advance

BACKGROUND: The aim of the treatment of radial head comminuted fractures is the restoration of anatomical normalcy to avoid the risk of several complications such as joint instability. Among the options for the treatment of such fractures, it is worth mentioning osteosynthesis, resection of the radial head or prosthetic replacement. In the presence of comminution or severe dislocation of the fracture's fragments, as in our patient's type III Mason fracture, prosthesis implantation is the treatment of choice.

Fractures to the anterior process of the calcaneus (PAC) have long been considered rare injuries and have received little attention in clinical research. On the contrary, recent studies have reported a distinct higher incidence, especially following ankle sprains. Decisive reasons are that fractures of the PAC are regularly missed on plain radiographs and that a clinical differentiation from injuries to the lateral ankle ligaments is difficult. With the broad availability of cross-sectional imaging modalities fractures of the PAC are diagnosed more frequently and more reliably. The purpose of

Complex proximal humerus fractures are often difficult to treat. Their frequency is high, especially in the elderly, and their treatment is still controversial. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and radiological results achieved by patients with complex proximal humerus fractures, treated with PHILOS plate only. A cohort of 55 patients was selected. The mean age was 63.4 (range 33-89), while the mean follow-up time was 21.5 months (range 6-75). Clinical outcome was evaluated with the "Constant-Murley shoulder score." All the informations about the presence of complications were

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fractures of the lateral malleolus often require open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Despite uneventful fracture healing, many patients will suffer from long-term detriments after ORIF, such as local tenderness that requires hardware removal. In Sweden, there are 2 major fixation methods, either the AO method (plate and screws) or the Cedell method (cerclage wire and staple). The purpose of this study was to establish whether there is a difference in extraction frequency between the 2 methods.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective comparative stud
