Reduction of chronic malnutrition for infants in Bogotá, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: According to the 2015 National Survey of the Nutritional Situation in Colombia the prevalence of stunting in children under 5 years of age was 10.8%. In terms of region, Bogotá, presented the highest prevalence rate (13%), a figure that exceeded national records. With the collaboration of local and national government, and nongovernmental it was decided to develop a pilot study involving a public health intervention with residents of Bogotá under 1 year of age with nutritional classification by anthropometry compatible with stunting risk or stunting. METHODS: Pre-experimental, bef

[Successful treatment with imatinib for a patient with myeloid neoplasms with eosinophilia and abnormalities of PDGFRB due to t (5;14)(q33;q22)].

A 50-year old man with a 1-year history of eosinophilia presented with an eosinophil count exceeding 13,800/mm3 in the peripheral blood at the first visit. Bone marrow examination revealed that eosinophils accounted for 30% of the nucleated cell count, and G-band karyotyping analysis detected t (5;14)(q33;q22). Using peripheral blood FISH test, he was found to have platelet-derived growth factor receptor β (PDGFRB) locus rearrangement at 5q32-33. The level of eosinophils in the peripheral blood reduced markedly 3 days after the initiation of Imatinib mesylate, 400 mg daily. This treatment was

Associations between post-traumatic growth and wisdom in people with long-term paraplegia - the role of disability appraisals and participation.

PURPOSE: The number of people with long-term spinal cord injury (SCI) is growing but our knowledge about their successful functioning is still limited. The goal of this study was to investigate the correlations between posttraumatic growth (PTG) and wisdom in people with long-term paraplegia, exploring the mediating effect of disability appraisals, and participation/autonomy (P/A). METHODS: One-hundred and sixty-six persons with paraplegia completed a set of questionnaires, which included: The three-dimensional Wisdom Scale; The Post-traumatic Growth Inventory; Appraisals of Disability Primar

Intrauterine Growth Restriction Causes Abnormal Embryonic Dentate Gyrus Neurogenesis in Mouse Offspring That Leads to Adult Learning and Memory Deficits.

Human infants who suffer from intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), which is a failure to attain their genetically predetermined weight, are at increased risk for postnatal learning and memory deficits. Hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) granule neurons play an important role in memory formation; however, it is unknown whether IUGR affects embryonic DG neurogenesis, which could provide a potential mechanism underlying abnormal postnatal learning and memory function. Using a mouse model of the most common cause of IUGR, induced by hypertensive disease of pregnancy, we first assessed adult learnin

Hepatomegaly and short stature in a 14-year-old with type 1 diabetes mellitus: case report.

BACKGROUND: Mauriac syndrome is a rare consequence of poorly controlled insulin-dependent diabetes, characterized by hepatomegaly, growth failure, delayed onset of puberty, and cushingoid features. Case reports of patients with Mauriac syndrome are found infrequently in the literature given historic improvements in diabetes management due to readily available insulin therapy. METHODS: We describe a case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with acute onset abdominal pain, distention, and orthopnea. RESULTS: She had a history of poorly controlled insulin-dependent diabetes as well as short sta

Stunting, double orphanhood and unequal access to public services in democratic South Africa.

Orphans who lack household or community support face significant socio-economic disadvantages. In particular, they are at greater risk of malnutrition and stunting in developing countries. Children who have no living parents, also called double orphans, are most likely to require support from extended families or public institutions. This paper explores how WASH infrastructure, and public health and social services relate to stunting. It is one of the first studies to analyse these factors with a specific focus on double orphans, who tend to live in under-serviced areas with high stunting rate

The putative etiology and prevention of autism.

Since the initial psychological report by Leo Kanner in 1943, relatively little formal biochemical/neurological research on the cause of autism, other than peripheral searches for genomic mutations, had been carried until the end of the 20th century. As a result of studies on twin sets and the conclusion that autism was largely a hereditary defect, numerous investigations have sought various genetic faults in particular. However, such studies were able to reveal a plausible etiology for this malady in only a small percentage of instances. Key bio-molecular characteristics of this syndrome have

Infections and nutritional status of internationally adopted children in France.

AIM: In the context of global changes in the epidemiology of internationally adopted children (IACs), the prevalence of infectious diseases and nutritional impairment has not been recently reviewed. Moreover, in France, these characteristics of the children according to their continents of origin and preadoption special needs (SN) status have been incompletely explored. METHODS: Demographic, infectious data and anthropometric of all the newly arrived IACs seen in a specialised clinic for international adoptees in Paris, France, between 2013 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Th

The role of uric acid in mineral bone disorders in chronic kidney disease.

Increasing survival in the chronic kidney disease (CKD) population exposes the bone to the cumulative detrimental sequelae of CKD, now defined physiologically and histopathologically as chronic kidney disease mineral bone disorder (CKD-BMD). This disorder is increasingly recognized as a "nontraditional" driver of morbidity and mortality and presents an opportunity to improve CKD outcomes via research. However, recent advances in the literature on this topic have not yet been collected into a single review. Therefore, this report aims to discuss the disordered renal-bone axis in CKD-BMD, molecu

SETD2 related overgrowth syndrome: Presentation of four new patients and review of the literature.

The common genes responsible for overgrowth syndromes play key roles in regulating transcription through histone modification and chromatin modeling. The SETD2 gene encoding a H3K36 trimethyltransferase is implicated in Sotos-like syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by postnatal overgrowth, macrocephaly, obesity, speech delay, and advanced carpal ossification. We report four new patients with constitutional SETD2 mutations and review nine earlier reported patients. Almost all patients presented with macrocephaly associated with advanced stature and obesity in half of the cases. In additio

Novel features of PIK3CA-Related Overgrowth Spectrum: Lesson from an aborted fetus presenting a de novo constitutional PIK3CA mutation.

PIK3CA-Related Overgrowth Spectrum (PROS) encompass a group of disorders which are mainly characterized by segmental overgrowth of several tissues as well as venous and lymphatic malformations. It is caused by heterozygous, usually somatic mosaic, pathogenic variants in the PIK3CA gene. However, some patients presenting mainly isolated megalencephaly or "Cowden-like" features have been described harboring constitutional mutations of PIK3CA. Here, we report the case of a woman whose pregnancy was interrupted at 34 weeks of gestation after the detection of the following ultrasound abnormalities:

Growth Restriction and Systemic Immune Development in Preterm Piglets.

Background: Many preterm infants are born with growth restriction (GR) following maternal or fetal complications before birth. Such infants may continue to grow slowly after birth, regardless of birth weight (BW), due to morbidities related to their immature organs. Severe GR increases the susceptibility to infections, but it is not clear if this is a consequence of impaired systemic immunity or other factors, such as prolonged hospital stay or poor mucosal barrier function. Using preterm pigs as models for preterm infants, we hypothesized that moderate GR, exerting limited clinical effects, d

Prenatal diagnosis of premature chromatid separation/mosaic variegated aneuploidy (PCS/MVA) syndrome.

Premature chromatid separation/mosaic variegated aneuploidy (PCS/MVA) syndrome is a rare genetic disorder. In this case report, we describe the prenatal diagnosis of PCS/MVA syndrome in a 24-year-old, gravida 1, para 1, woman who was referred to us in her second trimester due to fetal growth restriction and extreme microcephaly (-5.0 standard deviations). Amniocentesis and chromosomal analysis confirmed PCS in 80% of cultured fetal cells. PCS findings were positive in 9% of paternal cells and 11% of maternal cells, indicative that both were PCS carriers. Genetic analysis confirmed that the fet

Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and constitutional delay of growth and puberty have distinct genetic architectures.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) and constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP) represent rare and common forms of GnRH deficiency, respectively. Both CDGP and CHH present with delayed puberty, and the distinction between these two entities during early adolescence is challenging. More than 30 genes have been implicated in CHH, while the genetic basis of CDGP is poorly understood. DESIGN: We characterized and compared the genetic architectures of CHH and CDGP, to test the hypothesis of a shared genetic basis between these disorders. METHODS: Exome sequencing d

Effects of Astragalus Extract Mixture HT042 on Height Growth in Children with Mild Short Stature: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.

HT042 is a standardized functional food ingredient approved by Korean Food and Drug Administration with a claim 'HT042 can help height growth of children'. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of HT042 on height growth in children with mild short stature. A multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel study was performed on children aged 6-8 years with height ranked below the 25th percentile. In 129 children, height gain was significantly higher in HT042 group than placebo group after 24 weeks (mean difference, 0.29 cm; 95% CI, 0.01 to 0.57 cm; p = 0.027). The dif

Long-Term Skeletal Disproportion in Childhood-Onset Crohn's Disease.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether Crohn's disease (CD) is associated with skeletal disproportion in adulthood. METHODS: Height (Ht), sitting height (SHt) and leg length were studied in 44 children (male: 22), 23 adults (male: 10) with childhood-onset (CO) CD and 26 adults (male: 9) with adult-onset (AO) CD with a median (range) age of 13.7 (10, 17.3), 21.5 (18, 32) and 31.0 (22, 40) years, respectively. RESULTS: Adults with CO-CD had a median Ht standard deviation score (SDS) of -0.9 (-2.3, 0.0) compared to 0.6 (-0.8, 1.0) in those with AO-CD (p < 0.05). Compared to a normal population, men,
