Examining Individual and Contextual Correlates of Victimization for Juvenile Human Trafficking in Florida.

Despite extant literature on individual-level risk factors for sex trafficking among children and adolescents, little is known about the impact of social and ecological contexts on risk of human trafficking victimization. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlates signaling risk of human trafficking victimization at the individual, family, social, and community levels utilizing a sample of 40,531 justice-involved male and female youth, a small fraction of whom were suspected or verified victims of human trafficking between 2011 and 2015 (N = 801, including 699 female and 102 male

One Health Assessment of Bacillus anthracis Incidence and Detection in Anthrax-Endemic Areas of Pakistan.

Anthrax, a severe zoonotic disease, is infrequently reported in anthrax-endemic regions of Pakistan. Despite clinical reports indicating its presence, particularly cutaneous anthrax, there is insufficient laboratory evidence regarding disease occurrence and environmental persistence. The present study aimed to confirm Bacillus anthracis presence, accountable for animal mortality and human infection, while exploring environmental transmission factors. Between March 2019 and July 2021, a total of 19 outbreaks were documented. Of these, 11 affected sheep/goats in Zhob district and 8 affected catt

A glutaminyl cyclase-catalyzed α-synuclein modification identified in human synucleinopathies.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is neuropathologically characterized by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra (SN) and formation of Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites composed of aggregated α-synuclein. Proteolysis of α-synuclein by matrix metalloproteinases was shown to facilitate its aggregation and to affect cell viability. One of the proteolysed fragments, Gln79-α-synuclein, possesses a glutamine residue at its N-terminus. We argue that glutaminyl cyclase (QC) may catalyze the pyroglutamate (pGlu)79-α-synuclein formation and, ther

A human-based assisted reproduction protocol for the menstruating spiny mouse, Acomys cahirinus.

The Egyptian or Common spiny mouse (A. cahirinus) is the first rodent species to show human-like menstruation and spontaneous decidualisation. We consider from these, and its other, human-like characteristics that this species will be a more useful and appropriate small animal model for human reproductive studies. Based on this, there is a need to develop specific laboratory-based assisted reproduction protocols including superovulation, in-vitro fertilisation, embryo cryopreservation and transfer to expand and make this model more relevant. Because standard rodent superovulation has not been

Mapping the distribution of tick-borne encephalitis in mainland China.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has become an increasing public health threat in recent years, ranging from Europe, through far-eastern Russia to Japan and northern China. However, the neglect of its expansion and scarce analyses of the dynamics have made the overall disease burden and the risk distribution of the disease being unclear in mainland China. In this study, we described epidemiological characteristics of 2117 reported human TBE cases from 2006 to 2013 in mainland China. About 99% of the cases were reported in forest areas of northeastern China, and 93% of reported infections occurred

Detection of the GPI-anchorless prion protein fragment PrP226* in human brain.

BACKGROUND: The accumulation of the misfolded forms of cellular prion protein, i.e. prions (PrPSc), in the brain is one of the crucial characteristics of fatal neurodegenerative disorders, called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). Cellular prion protein is normally linked to the cell surface by the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. There is accumulating evidence that the GPI-anchorless prion protein may act as an accelerator of formation and propagation of prions. In the TSE affected human brain we have previously discovered a novel GPI-anchorless prion protein fragment

Comparison of the behavioural and histological characteristics of the 6-OHDA and α-synuclein rat models of Parkinson's disease.

Development of relevant models of Parkinson's disease (PD) is essential for a better understanding of the pathological processes underlying the human disease and for the evaluation of promising targets for therapeutic intervention. To date, most pre-clinical studies have been performed in the well-established rodent and non-human primate models using injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) or 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydroxypyridine (MPTP). Overexpression of the disease-causing protein α-synuclein (α-syn), using adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors, has provided a novel model that recapi

Evidence for a secondary state of the human beta3-adrenoceptor.

There are three members of the beta-adrenoceptor family, all of which are primarily coupled to G(s) proteins. Recent studies using the huge range of beta-ligands now available have given remarkable new insights into their pharmacology. beta1-adrenoceptors exist in at least two active conformations, whereas beta2-adrenoceptors are able to induce signaling via different agonist-induced receptor conformational states, and their affinity for antagonists can be altered by highly efficacious agonists. This study therefore examined the pharmacology of the human beta3-adrenoceptor stably expressed in

Isolation of a cDNA encoding a taurine transporter in the human retinal pigment epithelium.

Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was performed to amplify a cDNA encoding a taurine transporter in the human retinal pigment epithelium (HRPE). The coding region of a PCR product was found to be 1863 bp long, predicting a 620-amino acid protein (69,826 Da). This cDNA sequence is almost identical to those taurine transporters recently determined in the human thyroid and placenta: 12 and 1 base pair(s) different from the reported thyroid and placenta transporter clones, respectively. The injection of mRNA in vitro transcribed from the PCR product markedly increased taurin

ESP32-S3-Based Multimodal Wearable for Remote Vital-Sign Acquisition with ECG-to-PPG Pulse-Arrival-Time Tracking and Functional Cloud Triage: An Engineering Proof of Concept.

Continuous remote physiological monitoring requires low-cost sensing nodes to preserve timing fidelity while maintaining secure connectivity and interpretable escalation. This study presents an engineering proof-of-concept platform centered on an ESP32-S3 with AD8232 ECG, MAX30102 PPG/SpO2, and MAX30205 contact-temperature sensing. FreeRTOS separates nominal 100 Hz ECG/PPG acquisition from network communication, and the ECG R-wave-to-peripheral-PPG-foot interval is treated as pulse-arrival time (PAT). Telemetry is transmitted over authenticated HTTPS to a Laravel platform, while a separate Fas

Personalized Models of Biological Barriers and Their Diseases: Recent Progress with Organs-On-Chips.

Barrier tissues-epithelial and endothelial interfaces that compartmentalize the human body-govern molecular exchange, immune surveillance, and organ homeostasis. Their dysfunction is central to disorders ranging from dermatitis to neurodegeneration. Conventional static cultures fail to capture the relevant microenvironment and typically rely on cell lines that overlook patient-specific genetics. Organs-on-chips (OoCs), by contrast, can recapitulate barrier-specific flow, biomechanics, chemical gradients, and a multicellular architecture. Additionally, incorporating primary or induced pluripote

Assessment of the Radiopacity of Medication in Veterinary Medicine.

Radiographic and computed tomographic (CT) visibility of human medications has been widely studied; however, equivalent data for veterinary medications remain limited. This study evaluated the radiographic visibility, dissolution characteristics, and CT features of commonly used veterinary and some human medications using a standardized water model. Seventy-five medications were assessed for radiopacity prior to submersion, immediately after submersion, after 30 min, and after 1 h. All medications were visible without water. More than half (54.6%) remained identifiable immediately after submer
