[Quality control of outpatient imaging examinations in North Rhine-Westphalia, Part II].

PURPOSE: In the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany, a survey was conducted on radiologic examinations ordered by general practitioners (GPs). Part II of this study aims to determine the quality of the process and outcome. The reference standard is the assessment of both radiologists and physicians without board certification in radiology working at a university hospital and in outpatient facilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: AllGPs in NRW were asked to cooperate. Participating GPs filled out a questionnaire for each patient. The patients recorded the symptoms prompting the imaging ex

Morphological and histochemical characterization of the mucosa of the digestive tract in Engraulis anchoita.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a challenging condition for clinicians, and research has yet not proven the superiority of one specific treatment approach. However, manual therapy (elbow mobilization) in addition to eccentric exercise has been found to be superior to exercise alone. As well, acupuncture is effective in short-term pain relief when compared with sham treatment, but there is little knowledge on the comparative effectiveness of manual therapy and acupuncture treatment of LE in terms of pain relief. The primary objective of this pilot trial was to assess the feasibility (

Implementing a Colorectal Cancer Screening Decision Aid via Text Messaging in a Large Massachusetts Health Care System.

UNLABELLED: Background. The use of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening decision aids (DAs) increases patient knowledge and engagement in decision making. Thus, we aimed to implement a CRC DA in a Boston-area health system informed by the Theory of Change quality improvement framework. Methods. Following international standards, an interdisciplinary working group developed a 2-page CRC screening DA, readable on smartphones, for adults ages 45 to 75 y. Prior to DA implementation, we texted a study survey to 8,641 adults age 45 to 75 y seen in primary care at our health system (baseline). Between J

Systemic Barriers to Curriculum Adaptation for Rapidly Changing Knowledge in Medical Education: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: For this study, digitalization in medicine was used as an illustrative case to investigate how medical curricula respond to rapidly changing knowledge. Digitalization is transforming the way medicine and health care are provided and experienced. Experts have suggested various topics for medical curricula to keep pace with rapidly evolving knowledge. However, adapting these curricula remains a lengthy process that often lacks an interdisciplinary approach. OBJECTIVE: The perspectives of curriculum governing bodies and the boards responsible for curriculum operations at 2 medical un

Beyond surviving: The mental and physical impairment of health-related quality of life after polytrauma emphasizes the need for interprofessional long-term aftercare.

BACKGROUND: Major trauma, particularly from road traffic accidents, is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in young adults worldwide. Advances in trauma center management, especially in Germany, have substantially improved survival rates to approximately 90%, which can be considered excellent. They often experience a reduced health-related quality of life (HrQoL) due to persistent physical, emotional, and mental challenges, underscoring the need for comprehensive long-term aftercare. This study focuses on the traumatic aftermath two years after polytrauma beyond the individual pa

Trends and hotspots in research related to tumor immune escape: bibliometric analysis and future perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Tumor immune escape, a defining hallmark of malignant tumors, enables cancer cells to thrive within the host by evading detection and attack by the immune system. While immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as PD-1/PD-L1 antibodies, have delivered significant clinical advances, their effectiveness is tempered by modest response rates and a growing challenge of drug resistance. In this study, we aimed to explore the development process and trend of tumor immune escape, analyze the current hot spots, and predict the future research directions. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was condu

Psychological Disorders of Patients With Allergic Rhinitis in Chengdu, China: Exploratory Research.

BACKGROUND: The number of patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) has exceeded 500 million worldwide due to the unstable curative effect that can easily produce mental and psychological disorders. However, most of the relevant existing literature is one-on-one retrospective analyses or targeted meta-analyses of AR with psychological disorders like irritability, depression, and anxiety, while "multi-hospital + interdisciplinary" multiple regression analyses are scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to precisely identify the psychological disorders of patients with AR who were diagnosed and treated i

Expressiveness of an International Semantic Standard for Wound Care: Mapping a Standardized Item Set for Leg Ulcers to the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine-Clinical Terms.

BACKGROUND: Chronic health conditions are on the rise and are putting high economic pressure on health systems, as they require well-coordinated prevention and treatment. Among chronic conditions, chronic wounds such as cardiovascular leg ulcers have a high prevalence. Their treatment is highly interdisciplinary and regularly spans multiple care settings and organizations; this places particularly high demands on interoperable information exchange that can be achieved using international semantic standards, such as Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine-Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT). OBJECTIVE: T

Orthosis versus no orthosis for the treatment of thoracolumbar burst fractures without neurologic injury: a multicenter prospective randomized equivalence trial.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Thoracolumbar burst fractures have good outcomes when treated with early ambulation and orthosis (TLSO). If equally good outcomes could be achieved with early ambulation and no brace, resource utilization would be decreased, especially in developing countries where prolonged bed rest is the default option because bracing is not available or affordable. PURPOSE: To determine whether TLSO is equivalent to no orthosis (NO) in the treatment of acute AO Type A3 thoracolumbar burst fractures with respect to their functional outcome at 3 months. STUDY DESIGN: A multicentre, rand

A multilevel path model analysis of the relations between sleep, pain, and pain catastrophizing in chronic pain rehabilitation patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Pain catastrophizing is linked to heightened pain and poorer coping among individuals with chronic pain, yet little is known about how pain catastrophizing associates with sleep and pain over the course of treatment for chronic pain. Previous research employing a cross-sectional design suggests that sleep mediates the association between pain catstrophizing and pain, but there have been no longitudinal studies examining the directionality of these associations. Thus, the aim of this study was to test two competing theoretical models. The first model specified that pain cata
