Women in prison have often suffered physical and sexual abuse as children which substantively contributes to their substance abuse, violence, and criminal behaviors. To understand women's offending, and subsequent health issues, it is helpful to understand their own victimization. In this participative action research, women used poetry as both a process and a product to confront the truths of their lives in terms of what was done to them and what they have done to others and themselves. This article reviews the role of attachment in difficult-to-treat patients. It is suggested that difficulty often arises in the treatment of these patients because of their inadequate understanding of mental functioning in themselves and in others. The capacity to mentalize is seen as a function of early attachment relationships. Vulnerability introduced by insecure attachment is frequently compounded by a history of intense trauma, leading these patients to defensively inhibit their capacity to think about mental states in their abusers, which then generalizes to other attachment relationship

Deficits in the decoding of facial emotional expressions may play a role in the persistence of depression. The causal pathways that link depression and dissatisfaction in intimate relationships were estimated in 115 patients during the first 12 weeks of treatment with cognitive-behavioral therapy for depression. Asperger's Syndrome is assumed to be closely related to autism. A case of a 21-yr-old man with Asperger's Syndrome who is frequently violent to his 71-yr-old girlfriend is presented. According to a social-cognitive model of autism, this man is predicted to be markedly impoverished in his appreciation of his victim's thoughts and feelings. Interview-based assessments confirm this deficit, and this is discussed as an important factor in the maintenance of his violence.

Of 30 agoraphobic married women undertaking home-based behaviour therapy, 15 each had a female friend as co-therapist and 15 had their own husband as co-therapist. At 12 months follow-up, women spent a mean of approximately 40 minutes a day more outside the home alone than at baseline. In a community survey of the elderly in Hobart, persons who lived alone were compared to those who lived with others. Those who lived alone were more often widows and had had more education. They had markedly fewer close relationships but as much other social interaction. By the age of 2 years, children with a manic-depressive parent were already found to be experiencing substantial psychiatric problems. The authors examined the ways in which these early problems then become embedded in social relationships. Naturalistic observations and experimental manipulations of the emotional environment were used to measure 2-year-old children's regulation of emotion, aggression, and altruism during peer interactions.
