Human intestinal epithelial cells produce proinflammatory cytokines in response to infection in a SCID mouse-human intestinal xenograft model of amebiasis.

The protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica causes amebic dysentery and amebic liver abscess, diseases associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. E. histolytica infection appears to involve the initial attachment of amebic trophozoites to intestinal epithelial cells, followed by lysis of these cells and subsequent invasion into the submucosa. A recent in vitro study (L. Eckmann, S. L. Reed, J. R. Smith, and M. F. Kagnoff, J. Clin. Invest. 96:1269-1279, 1995) demonstrated that incubation of E. histolytica trophozoites with epithelial cell lines results in epithelial cell pr

Studies on translocation of immunoglobulins across intestinal epithelium. II. Immunoelectron-microscopic localization of immunoglobulins and secretory component in human intestinal mucosa.

To define mechanisms involved in the transport of immunoglobulins into intestinal fluids, we localized IgM, IgA, IgG, and secretory component (SC) in human intestinal mucosa by the peroxidase-labeled antibody technique. At the light microscopic level, immunocytes containing IgA, IgM, or IgG were found in the lamina propria. IgA, IgM, and SC were prominent in the epithelium of gland crypts; IgG was limited to a few cells at tips of villi. At the electron-microscopic level, SC was localized to perinuclear spaces, endoplasmic reticulum, saccules associated with Golgi complexes, cytoplasmic vesicl

[Familial syndrome combining short small intestine, intestinal malrotation, pyloric hypertrophy and brain malformation. 3 anatomoclinical case reports].

Anatomoclinical study of 3 cases of an exceptional malformative condition characterized by: --extreme shortness of the small intestine, --mesenterium commune, --hypertrophic pylorus, --malformation of the central nervous system (heterotopia, absence of operculum temporale). Clinically this malformative condition is characterized by failure and inertia of the intestinal peristalsis producing at intervals of 10-15 days episodes of subocclusion, the repetition of which causes death. The syndrome is familial and seems to be of autosomal recessive inheritance. The absence of mechanical obstruction,

Undifferentiated large cell/rhabdoid carcinoma presenting in the intestines of patients with concurrent or recent non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC): clinicopathologic and molecular analysis of 14 cases indicates an unusual pattern of dedifferentiated metastases.

Undifferentiated carcinoma metastatic to the bowel is uncommon in surgical pathology practice and might be confused with primary gastrointes … BRAF (1) mutations or wildtype (1). Our study indicates that undifferentiated carcinoma within the intestines of patients with concurrent/recent NSCLC represents dedifferentiated metastasis from the NSCLC. Recognition of this unusual presentation is cardinal to avoid misdiagnosis with inappropriate therapeutic and prognostic implications.

S100A8/A9-High Macrophages Activate Intestinal Fibroblasts via mCCL6/hCCL15-CCR1 Axis to Drive Intestinal Fibrosis in Crohn's Disease.

Intestinal fibrosis presents a major clinical challenge in Crohn's disease (CD) due to the lack of effective pharmacological interventions. The underlying mechanisms of intestinal fibrosis remain largely elusive. Reanalysis of the single-cell RNA-seq data from full-thickness CD tissue identifies a distinct profibrotic macrophage subset characterized by high S100A8 and S100A9 expression. CellChat analysis indicates strong communication between this S100A8/A9-high (S100A8/A9hi) macrophage subset and fibroblasts. Adoptive transfer of S100A8/A9hi macrophages exacerbate intestinal fibrosis in mice

Effects of glucose oxidase combined with clostridium butyricum on broiler growth performance, nutrient digestibility, antioxidant function, intestinal barrier, and intestinal microbiota.

In Experiment 1, a total of 300 one-day-old yellow-feathered broiler chicks randomly allocated to three groups, with 10 replicates per group and 10 birds per pen. The treatments included: (C1) control diet (basal); (G2 and G4) control diet supplemented with 2000 U/kg and 4000 U/kg of GOD. The results showed that, compared with C1 and G4, G2 significantly increased the final weight and ADG of broilers in the starter phase and resulted in the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.05). Based on the results of Experiment 1, Experiment 2 was conducted using 400 one-day-old yellow-feathered broi

D-Tagatose attenuates DSS-induced ulcerative colitis by inhibiting inflammation, reducing intestinal barrier damage and modulating the intestinal flora composition.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a prevalent inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) posing a significant health threat. This study explored the protective effects of D-tagatose against DSS-induced colitis in mice and its underlying mechanisms using H&E staining, AB-PAS staining, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, ELISA, qPCR, western blotting, and other assays. D-Tagatose improved colitis by increasing body weight and colon length, with decreased DAI (disease activity index) and histopathological scores. The results showed that D-tagatose inhibited the secretion of myeloperoxidase (MPO), inflammato

Intestinal IL-25 prevents high-fat diet-induced obesity by modulating the cholesterol transporter NPC1L1 expression in the intestinal epithelial cells.

The intestine is essential for digestion and nutrient absorption, and its altered function contributes to metabolic dysregulation and obesity-induced intestinal inflammation. Intestinal immune responses have been associated with the regulation of metabolic dysfunction during obesity. Given that the epithelial cell-derived cytokine IL-25 has been demonstrated to regulate metabolic disorders, we sought to examine the role of intestinal IL-25 in modulating a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. We found that mice on a high-fat diet exhibited decreased IL-25 expression in the small intestine. Inte

Nondigestible stachyose alleviates cyclophosphamide-induced small intestinal mucosal injury in mice by regulating intestinal exosomal miRNAs, independently of the gut microbiota.

Stachyose has traditionally been considered to exert prebiotic effects primarily through its interaction with gut microbiota. However, this study reveals a novel mechanism by which stachyose alleviates cyclophosphamide (CY)-induced small intestinal mucosa disruption by regulating the intestinal exosomal miRNAs, without relying on the gut microbiota. Specifically, stachyose significantly mitigates CY-caused damage to the intestinal permeability, oxidative stress, and the structure of intestinal villi and crypts in pseudo-germ-free (PGF) mice. The immunofluorescence staining and qPCR analyses sh
