Effect of Hamstring Tightness and Fatigue on Dynamic Stability and Agility in Physically Active Young Men.

Hamstring extensibility has been defined as a factor to diminished dynamic stability and therefore increased risk of injury. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effects of hamstring tightness and fatigue on dynamic stability and agility. Nineteen participants were divided between the normal extensibility group (NEG) (n = 9, 82.2° ± 12.4°) and hamstrings tightness group (HTG) (n = 10, 64° ± 4.9°) using the passive straight leg raise test. To analyse dynamic stability and agility, they performed the modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) and Dynamic Postural Stability Index (DPSI)

Correlation between hip muscle strength and the lower quarter Y-balance test in athletes following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: The lower quarter Y-balance test (YBT-LQ), which measures dynamic postural control, has been reported to be predictive of lower limb injuries in athletes. It requires subjects to control their body while maintaining a single-leg stance, which necessitates sufficient strength of the hip muscles to maintain stability. The purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between the performance of the YBT-LQ and the hip abductor or extensor muscle strength in athletes following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery (ACLR). METHODS: Fifteen athletes with post-ACLR

Muscular and Kinematic Responses to Unexpected Translational Balance Perturbation: A Pilot Study in Healthy Young Adults.

Falls and fall-related injuries are significant public health problems in older adults. While balance-controlling strategies have been extensively researched, there is still a lack of understanding regarding how fast the lower-limb muscles contract and coordinate in response to a sudden loss of standing balance. Therefore, this pilot study aims to investigate the speed and timing patterns of multiple joint/muscles' activities among the different challenges in standing balance. Twelve healthy young subjects were recruited, and they received unexpected translational balance perturbations with ra

Effective Connectivity in Spinal Cord Injury-Induced Neuropathic Pain.

AIM: The aim of this study was to differentiate the effects of spinal cord injury (SCI) and central neuropathic pain (CNP) on effective connectivity during motor imagery of legs, where CNP is typically experienced. METHODS: Multichannel EEG was recorded during motor imagery of the legs in 3 groups of people: able-bodied (N = 10), SCI with existing CNP (N = 10), and SCI with no CNP (N = 20). The last group was followed up for 6 months to check for the onset of CNP. Source reconstruction was performed to obtain cortical activity in 17 areas spanning sensorimotor regions and pain matrix. Effecti

Return to sports and short-term follow-up of 101 cases of medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction using gracilis tendon autograft in children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: An acute patellofemoral dislocation is the most common acute knee injury in children. Recent studies suggest up to 40% of immature patients may develop recurrent instability. MPFL reconstruction has become a mainstay for the treatment of patellofemoral instability. Aim of the recent study is to show our experiences of MPFL reconstruction in patellar instability in immature patients using a gracilis autograft in respect to return to sport, growth plate disorders and short-term results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 101 patients (50 females, 51 males) were included in this ret

Resection of Spinal Meningioma Using Ultrasonic BoneScalpel Microshaver: Cases, Technique, and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas of the spinal canal comprise up to 40% of all spinal tumors. The standard management of these tumors is gross total resection. The outcome and extent of resection depends on location, size, patient's neurologic status, and experience of the surgeon. Heavily calcified spinal meningiomas often pose a challenge for achieving gross total resection without cord injury. OBJECTIVE: To report our experience with the BoneScalpel Micro-shaver to resect heavily calcified areas of spinal meningiomas adherent to the spinal cord without significant cord manipulation, achieving gross

Dynamic knee valgus alignment influences impact attenuation in the lower extremity during the deceleration phase of a single-leg landing.

Dynamic knee valgus during landings is associated with an increased risk of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. In addition, the impact on the body during landings must be attenuated in the lower extremity joints. The purpose of this study was to investigate landing biomechanics during landing with dynamic knee valgus by measuring the vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) and angular impulses in the lower extremity during a single-leg landing. The study included 34 female college students, who performed the single-leg drop vertical jump. Lower extremity kinetic and kinematic d

Hemorrhagic lumbar synovial cyst: case report and literature review.

Intraspinal synovial cysts are infrequent causes of back and radicular leg pain. Commonly associated with degenerative spinal disease, the majority of synovial cysts appear in the lumbar spine. Rarely, intracystic hemorrhage can occur through an unclear mechanism. Similarly rare, cysts may also become migratory. The pathogenesis of hemorrhagic synovial cysts remains uncertain and their potential for migration also remains unclear. A 36 year-old male presented to the clinic with 5 months of back pain and leg pain that began after a work-related injury. An initial MRI obtained by another surgeon

Effect of knee angle on quadriceps strength and activation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Quadriceps strength and activation deficits after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury or surgery are typically evaluated at joint positions that are biomechanically advantageous to the quadriceps muscle. However, the effect of knee joint position and the associated changes in muscle length on strength and activation is currently unknown in this population. Here, we examined the effect of knee angle on quadriceps strength, activation, and electrically evoked torque in individuals with ACL reconstruction. Furthermore, we evaluated whether knee angle mediated the relationship between quadrice

Other non-vertebral fractures.

Non-vertebral non-hip (NVNH) fractures account for 90% of all fractures in patients up to 80 years of age and for 59% thereafter. There is a significant relationship between reductions in peripheral bone mineral density and the risk of fractures at various NVNH sites except for the face. Fractures of the clavicle, upper arm, forearm, spine, ribs, hip, pelvis, upper leg and lower leg elevate the risk of future fractures. Among NVNH fractures in women aged 80 years or over, forearm fractures have the highest incidence, and proximal humerus fractures have the second highest incidence. There is a

Free vascularised fibular graft for neglected femoral neck fractures in young adults.

Neglected femoral neck fractures in young adults pose a great challenge to orthopedic surgeons because of the high risks of nonunion and osteonecrosis. We attempted to determine whether free vascularised fibular grafting through an anterior approach could enhance bone union, improve hip function and reduce complications in the treatment of such fractures. Thirteen patients with neglected femoral neck fractures were treated with a free vascularised fibular graft through an anterior approach between 2004 and 2008. The mean age was 30.9 years (range, 17-47 years). The average delay between injury

Direct triggers for ulceration in patients with venous insufficiency.

BACKGROUND: More than 80% of leg ulcers are caused by venous insufficiency. The actual causes of venous ulcers, beyond the presence of venous insufficiency, are rarely referred to in the literature. This study evaluates the direct triggers for ulceration in patients with venous insufficiency. METHODS: Sixty-four patients with 110 chronic venous ulcers, treated in the Chronic Wounds Clinic of Soroka University Medical Center from 1999 through 2002, were included in the study. In each patient, the actual trigger of ulceration was determined by history taking and reviewing of the medical chart.

Changes in passive tension of muscle in humans and animals after eccentric exercise.

1. This is a report of experiments on ankle extensor muscles of human subjects and a parallel series on the medial gastrocnemius of the anaesthetised cat, investigating the origin of the rise in passive tension after a period of eccentric exercise. 2. Subjects exercised their triceps surae of one leg eccentrically by walking backwards on an inclined, forward-moving treadmill. Concentric exercise required walking forwards on a backwards-moving treadmill. For all subjects the other leg acted as a control. 3. Immediately after both eccentric and concentric exercise there was a significant drop in

Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia associated with neurofibromatosis-1: treatment with Ilizarov's device.

We reexamined 21 patients with congenital pseudarthrosis of the leg (congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia; CPT) associated with neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1), > or =2 years after the termination of treatment, for a statistical study of the results obtained by using Ilizarov's external fixator. Of the 21 tibias operated on, 17 consolidated after the first treatment, whereas four did not. Of the 17 consolidated tibias, four refractured and were retreated by using a variety of methods. Only one healed. At follow-up, which occurred > or =2 years after the removal of the fixator, the results were n
