The distribution of subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in Latin America is not well known. This Chilean study included 207 consecutive cases of NHL diagnosed at five cancer centers in the capital, Santiago, and one center in Viña del Mar. All cases were reviewed and classified independently by five expert hematopathologists according to the 2001 World Health Organization classification of NHL. A consensus diagnosis of NHL was reached in 195 of the 207 cases (94%). B-cell lymphomas constituted 88% of NHL, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL, 38.5%) and follicular lymphoma (25.1%) were

Primary thyroid lymphoma is an uncommon malignant tumor of the thyroid gland. The most frequent histological subtype is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, which typically occurs in middle-aged to elderly women and presents as a rapidly enlarging cervical mass. We report the cases of three women, aged between 50 and 75 years, who presented with rapidly enlarging cervical masses accompanied by compression symptoms such as dyspnea and dysphagia. Cervicothoracic computed tomography (CT) scans revealed a plunging goiter in two patients and a well-defined thyroid mass in the third. Surgical biopsies wer

INTRODUCTION: B acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL) is a proliferation of hematopoietic precursor cells characterized by the expression of various B-cell antigens. Expression of T cell antigens has rarely been reported in B-ALL. We report the second case CD5+ (Cluster of differentiation 5) B-ALL associated with Philadelphia chromosome (Phi+).
OBSERVATION: A 38-year old male presented with anorexia and generalized weakness for the last ten days. Hemogram revealed bicytopenia and hyperleukocytosis made of 93% difficult to classify cells. A diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma was suspec

Double-hit lymphoma (DHL) has been defined by others as a B-cell lymphoma with MYC/8q24 rearrangement in combination with a translocation involving another gene, such as BCL2, BCL3, or BCL6. The most common form of DHL has translocations involving MYC and BCL2, also known as MYC/BCL2 DHL. In recent years, a number of case series of MYC/BCL2 DHL have been published. Most cases of MYC/BCL2 DHL morphologically resemble diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) or B-cell lymphoma, unclassifiable, with features intermediate between DLBCL and Burkitt lymphoma. These tumors are of B-cell lineage, have a

The relative distribution of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) subtypes differs markedly around the world. The aim of this study was to report this distribution in Algeria. A panel of four hematopathologists classified 197 consecutive cases according to the World Health Organization classification, including 87.3% B-cell and 12.7% T- or natural killer (NK)-cell NHLs. This series was compared with similar cohorts from Western Europe (WEU) and North America (NA). Algeria had a significantly higher frequency of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL: 52.8%) and a lower frequency of follicular lymphoma (FL

Rituximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that recognizes the CD20 antigen. It has been used to treat B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL), but recently rituximab resistance has been a cause for concern. We examined histological and immunohistochemical changes in 59 patients with B-NHL after rituximab therapy. The patients comprised 32 men and 27 women with a median age of 59 years. Pre-rituximab specimens comprised 34 follicular lymphomas (FL), 11 diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL), 10 mantle cell lymphomas, two marginal zone B-cell lymphomas (MZBCL), and two chronic lymphocytic leukemia

INTRODUCTION: The etiology of hypercalcemia in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) has been most often attributed to either elevated serum levels of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol) or parathyroid-related protein (PTHrP). In a single-center retrospective review, we evaluated the incidence of, and outcomes associated with, hypercalcemia in NHL.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of patients with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of NHL and ≥ 1 episode of hypercalcemia were evaluated for demographic and lymphoma-specific factors, including the response to therapy and overall survival

BACKGROUND: The relative incidence of malignant lymphoma subtypes differs according to geographic location. This study investigated the epidemiology of cutaneous lymphoma subtypes in Japan and compared it with other countries.
METHODS: Sixty-two patients with cutaneous lymphoma attending the Department of Dermatology, National Hospital Organization Hokkaido Cancer Center were reviewed. The World Health Organization classification of hematopoietic and lymphoid malignancies was adopted.
RESULTS: Of the 62 patients, 31 had primary cutaneous lymphoma (PCL) and 31 had secondary cutaneous lymphoma

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is highly aggressive and requires very intensive chemotherapy approaches for successful treatment. Although "standard" approaches are tolerated in young patients, this is not the case in older adults, and new approaches that lower toxicity but maintain high curability are needed and are currently in development. Recently, high-grade B-cell lymphomas with MYC and BCL2 and/or BCL6 rearrangements have been categorized separately from diffuse large B-cell lymphoma or BL. These have poor outcomes and many exciting novel approaches are being tested in an attempt to augment cura

Neurolymphomatosis is defined as infiltration of the nervous system by hematological malignancy and is difficult to diagnose. We report a case of a 57-year-old man, treated for small B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, presenting with sensorimotor impairment of the lower limbs, which started 6 years after diagnosis. He was treated with chemotherapy, after which, the symptoms disappeared. After 7 months, he developed sensorimotor impairment of both upper limbs. MRI of the brachial plexus showed no abnormalities. F-FDG PET-CT showed increased uptake at the brachial plexus and nerves, suggesting neuroly

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, autopsy rates have diminished to less than 5% during the last half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century for a multitude of reasons. Many believe this results in unrecognized malignancies that could have explained a patient's death.
METHODS: We describe six deaths in which hematopoietic neoplasms were identified at autopsy but were not diagnosed clinically.
RESULTS: The six undiagnosed hematopoietic malignancy cases discovered at autopsy include four men and two women ranging from 50 to 78 years of age. One patient was African American an

Double-expressor lymphoma (DEL) is a diffuse large B cell lymphoma that exhibits co-expression of MYC and BCL2 proteins by immunohistochemistry. Patients with double-expressor lymphoma have a poor prognosis after standard chemoimmunotherapy or after high-dose chemotherapy with autologous transplantation, but the prognostic impact of DEL after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation has not been well characterized. We retrospectively analyzed 60 consecutive patients with de novo diffuse large B cell lymphoma or transformed follicular lymphoma who underwent allogeneic transplantation at ou
