Implementing meaningful activity facilitators to prevent hospital-acquired complications in French geriatric short-stay wards: A qualitative analysis of the context and stakeholder representations.

BACKGROUND: Rising hospitalization rates among older inpatients and their complex needs challenge traditional acute care models. Hospital-acquired complications and deconditioning remain major risks, especially when organizational constraints limit meaningful interactions. This qualitative study explored the perceived care needs for older inpatients and acceptability of Meaningful Activity Facilitators (MAFs) to address these needs in acute geriatric wards in France. METHODS: Using a multiple data source approach, we conducted non-participatory field observations and semi-structured interview

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS): A new member of the World Apheresis Association.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is a non-profit, vein-to-vein transfusion organisation serving approximately 56 million people across eight of South Africa's nine provinces. SANBS has evolved into one of the most comprehensive blood services on the African continent. Operating within a uniquely challenging epidemiological and socioeconomic milieu-characterised by the world's highest HIV prevalence among persons aged 15-49 years (approximately 19.1%) and a Gini coefficient of 0.63, reflecting extreme income inequality-SANBS has developed innovative service delivery models to en

A 1-km resolution dataset of affordability-constrained accessibility to elderly care facilities in China.

China's rapid population aging presents profound challenges for equitable institutional elderly care. Traditional spatial accessibility metrics typically neglect affordability constraints, leading to systematic overestimation of effective access for low-income older adults. We developed a national, 1-km resolution accessibility dataset for mainland China using an affordability-constrained Gaussian two-step floating catchment area (AC-Ga2SFCA) method that couples travel-time impedance with price-income affordability weighting. Household payment capacity is represented by a high-resolution per c

The need for whole-person care in managing community dwelling older stroke survivors.

Stroke remains a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide, disproportionately affecting older adults. Advances in acute stroke management have reduced mortality but led to a growing population of survivors living with long-term disability. The burden and impact of stroke extend beyond neurological impairment. Physically, older survivors experience functional decline, loss of independence in activities of daily living, and heightened need for environmental or institutional support. Psychologically and socially, stroke survivors face high rates of depression, anxiety, apathy, and fati

Palliative Care in Advanced Heart Failure.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Advanced heart failure (HF) is characterized by high symptom burden, poor quality of life (QoL), and recurrent hospitalizations. As survival improves, an increasing proportion of patients progresses to advanced stages, leading to a growing population of individuals with end-stage HF, many of whom are ineligible for heart transplantation or mechanical circulatory support due to age, comorbidities, frailty, or limited social support. This review aims to synthesize current evidence on palliative care (PC) integration in advanced HF, focusing on indications, timing of referral,

Sustainability in endoscopic medical congresses and courses: Position Statement from the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the European Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Nurses and Associates.

Medical conferences and educational courses in gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy are essential for training, quality improvement, and scientific exchange, but they are also associated with a substantial environmental footprint, largely driven by travel-related greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption. While sustainability in endoscopic practice has gained increasing attention, the environmental impact of endoscopy congresses and courses has remained insufficiently addressed. This document outlines the official position of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and the
