Psychological Processes Related to Persistent Physical Symptoms in Patients With a Suspected Rare Disease: A Cross-sectional Interview Study.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional interview study aimed to investigate subjective experiences and illness models of patients presenting at a rare disease center. In addition, we strove to identify psychological factors that may be associated with patients' heterogeneous and often unspecific persistent physical symptoms (PPS). METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 27 adult patients [56% female; mean age: M (SD)=44.0 (15.3)] with a suspected rare disease presenting at the Martin Zeitz Center for Rare Diseases in Hamburg, Germany. Numeric rating scales and open-ended questions asse

Characterising alexithymia in individuals with functional motor disorders: a cross-sectional analysis of the Italian Registry of Functional Motor Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia, a personality trait characterised by difficulty in identifying and expressing emotions, may contribute to the onset and clinical presentation of functional motor disorders (FMDs), although this association remains underexplored. METHODS: From the Italian Registry of FMDs, we selected individuals recruited between November 2011 and January 2023, diagnosed with FMD according to Gupta and Lang criteria and assessed for various neurological and psychological features with validated rating scales. The main statistical analysis included regression models using the Toronto A

Stress, pain intensity, and work productivity in individuals with chronic pain: a cross-sectional observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain affects one in three people globally, impacting work performance through absenteeism, presenteeism, and reduced productivity. Factors like mental health, poor sleep, and unhealthy diets exacerbate pain and impair efficiency. Addressing these issues through workplace programs and lifestyle changes could enhance productivity and well-being, improving overall workforce health. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between chronic pain, mental health, lifestyle factors, and work productivity among Spanish adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed chron

Perceived social support as a moderator of posttraumatic stress in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder.

Parents of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face elevated psychological distress, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study explored whether perceived social support moderates the relationship between parental gender and PTSD risk. A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted among 142 Arabic-speaking parents (equally distributed between mothers and fathers) recruited from 10 ASD treatment centers in central Jordan. Participants completed standardized measures of PTSD symptoms and perceived social support, along with demographic

The Relationship Between Physical Activity and Tinnitus Loudness and Severity: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is characterized by the perception of sound in the absence of an external stimulus and affects about 14.4% of the adult population. Psychological co-morbidities such as stress, anxiety, and depression can largely influence the patient's perception of tinnitus loudness and severity. Research has shown that these psychological conditions improve when patients are more physically active. To date, however, it is unclear if physical activity also affects tinnitus loudness and severity. Therefore, this study aims to uncover the relationship between physical activity and tinnit

Predicting clinical outcomes in a blended care intervention for early psychosis: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Daily-Life (ACT-DL).

ACT in Daily Life (ACT-DL) is a blended-care Ecological Momentary Intervention that extends ACT into the daily life of individuals, improving psychotic distress, negative symptoms, and global functioning. However, it remains unclear whether ACT-DL works equally for everyone. We investigated whether moderators (i.e., sociodemographic information, personality, and trauma history) determine clinical outcomes in individuals with early psychosis receiving ACT-DL. Seventy-one participants from the INTERACT trial, using ACT-DL, were analyzed. Outcomes included psychotic distress, negative symptoms, g

Longitudinal Relationships of Amygdalar and Hippocampal Volumes With Anxiety After Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often involves injury to limbic structures that may be linked to posttraumatic psychological health difficulties. The authors investigated whether the relationship of amygdala and hippocampal volumes with anxiety differed among children with TBI versus children without a history of TBI over time since injury. METHODS: Structural MRI scans were acquired for children ages 8-15 years at 7 weeks (time point 1) and 14 months (time point 2) after a TBI (N=51) as well as for age-matched healthy control (HC) children (N=36). Family Connections: The Impact of an Education Program for Carers of Individuals With Borderline Personality Disorder in Italian Mental Health Services.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has a strong impact not only on patients' lives but also on their families. The presence of an invalidating environment is one of the key factors in the etiology of BPD. This study evaluated the impact of the Family connections (FC) program on burden, grief, and other clinical variables in 202 caregivers and identified the profiles of participants who improved/deteriorated their levels of burden and grief. Findings from generalized linear mixed models showed significant reductions in burden, grief, depression, global psychological distress, and suppressed

A Network Analysis of Fear-Avoidance Beliefs, Mood, and Disability in Chronic Pain.

OBJECTIVES: Although the multifactorial nature of chronic pain is well established, research has predominantly examined isolated variables or singular pathways that may contribute to this condition. We use a complex systems perspective to examine the interplay of psychological factors in the context of chronic pain. METHODS: We analyzed 2 cross-sectional data sets (N=935 and 1366) collected at a pain clinic and rehabilitation center in Belgium from individuals primarily with musculoskeletal pain. These included self-reported data on pain-related fear and avoidance beliefs, depression and anxi

Хотя gamification широко используется в сфере здравоохранения, анализ данных о ее эффективности в различных клинических условиях остается непоследовательным. three основные базы данных: EBSCOhost, PubMed и Scopus вместе с two поисковые системы, включая Google Scientific and Sage Journal, без ограничений по годам, после PRISMA 2020 и методолог

Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression for Social Epidemiologic Research.

BACKGROUND: Little attention has been devoted to framing multiple continuous social variables as a "mixture" for social epidemiologic analysis. We propose using the Bayesian kernel machine regression analytic framework that yields univariate, bivariate, and overall exposure mixture effects. METHODS: Using data from the 2023 Survey of Racism and Public Health, we conducted a Bayesian kernel machine regression analysis to study several individual, social, and structural factors as an exposure mixture and their relationships with psychological distress among individuals with at least one police

A longitudinal study of healthcare workers' mental health during Western Australia's unique policy response to COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Western Australia's response to the COVID-19 pandemic was swift and effective in implementing public health protections and preventing the spread of the virus for the first 2 years. However, healthcare staff continued to be at increased risk of mental health concerns. AIMS: To investigate the longitudinal patterns of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), depression and anxiety among healthcare workers in Western Australia, and the risk and protective factors associated with changes in status during the first wave. METHOD: Participants comprised 183 healthcare staff working at te

Hot metacognition: poorer metacognitive efficiency following acute but not traumatic stress.

Aberrations to metacognition-the ability to reflect on and evaluate self-performance-are a feature of poor mental health. Theoretical models of post-traumatic stress disorder propose that following severe stress or trauma, maladaptive metacognitive evaluations and appraisals of the event drive the development of symptoms. Empirical research is required in order to reveal whether disruptions to metacognition cause or contribute to symptom development in line with theoretical accounts, or are simply a consequence of ongoing psychopathology. In two experiments, using hierarchical Bayesian modelli

Association between discrimination and subsequent psychotic experiences in patients with COVID-19: A cohort study.

Although cross-sectional studies have suggested that discrimination has a negative impact on the mental health of patients with COVID-19, no cohort studies with longitudinal data have established a causal relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between COVID-19-related discrimination and subsequent psychotic experiences in individuals who had contracted the disease. Secondary outcomes were PTSD symptoms, psychological distress, and suicidal ideation. We utilized inverse probability weighting and marginal structural models with robust standard errors to analyze

Psychological resilience is protective against cognitive deterioration in motor neuron diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies suggest that psychological resilience (PR) is associated with more well-preserved cognition in healthy subjects (HS), but an investigation of such phenomenon in patients with motor neuron diseases (MNDs) is still lacking. The aim of our study was therefore to evaluate PR and its relationship with baseline cognitive/behavioral and mood symptoms, as well as longitudinal cognitive functioning, in MNDs. METHODS: 94 MND patients and 87 demographically matched HS were enrolled. PR was assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Patients were further eva

Examining the relationship between public stigma, models of addiction, and addictive disorders.

BACKGROUND: The stigmatization of addiction has been identified as a barrier to treatment-seeking among individuals with substance use concerns. Although some evidence exists that beliefs in different models of addiction (MOAs) are associated with stigma, the research is limited in several ways. The aim of the current study is to understand the relationship between different MOAs and public stigma toward substance use disorders and behavioural addictions. METHOD: Participants were 755 adults who completed an online survey on MTurk (Mage = 36.2, SD = 10.1, 40.3% women, 59.4% men) and were rand
