In this work, the chitosan-zinc oxide-selenium nanocomposites (Ch-ZnO-Se NCs) were prepared in an affordable and eco-friendly way. Throughout the synthesis stage, chitosan served as reducing and stabilising agent. Different analytical techniques were employed to characterize the resulting nanocomposites. The findings demonstrated that irregular spherical-nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 73.95 nm were the predominant feature of the generated Ch-ZnO-Se NCs. The present study demonstrates that the mosquito vector Culex pipiens exhibit larvicidal and adulticidal effects upon exposure to the g

Large intra-articular loose bodies of the temporomandibular joint can limit operative arthroscopy when their size prevents retrieval through working trocars. Fragmentation, portal enlargement, accessory approaches, or open conversion may increase intra-articular manipulation and morbidity. This technical note describes a transcutaneous forceps-assisted maneuver for en-bloc removal of a large loose body under continuous arthroscopic visualization. The technique is illustrated in a 52-year-old woman with Wilkes stage IV internal derangement, pain of 7/10 on a visual analog scale, and maximal mou

Bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) is an arthropod-borne viral disease caused by the bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV) of the genus Ephemerovirus in the family Rhabdoviridae. BEF affects domestic and wild ruminants, particularly cattle and water buffaloes. BEF outbreaks are seasonal in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia, aligning with the summer and autumn seasons in temperate zones and during the monsoons in tropical areas. Vectors, like biting midges (Culicoides spp.) and mosquitoes (Anopheles and Culex spp.), facilitate BEFV transmission. The disease presents a spectrum of clinical si

The Oropouche virus (OROV), a member of the Simbu group's Orthobunyaviruses, is a vector-borne virus with three single-stranded negative-sense RNA segments and a spherical lipid sheath. It is mainly spread by Culicoides paraensis midges and, to a lesser extent, Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. OROV, first reported in Trinidad and Tobago in 1955, has since spread to Brazil, Colombia, and Peru, causing serological epidemics and recently invading nonendemic regions. The severity of the disease can vary from cold symptoms to severe illness, such as meningitis. Recent outbreaks in Acre and Brazil

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a flavivirus primarily transmitted by mosquitoes of the Culex genus and is endemic to Southern Europe. Although infection is usually asymptomatic, it can lead to neuroinvasive syndromes with high morbidity and mortality. Due to the increasing incidence driven by climatic factors, we present a single-center series examining short- and long-term functional outcomes after infection.
METHODS: Patients with neurological symptoms and confirmed WNV infection through serology and/or detection in urine and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) between 2017 and 2023 were inc

Nanoparticles are rapidly becoming the method of choice for a number of nanomedicine applications, especially drug delivery. Many current nanoparticle models for drug delivery include a metal base with a drug conjugated to its surface. However, this raises concerns regarding toxicity since the conjugated drug and metal-based center of the nanoparticle are generally not biocompatible. A novel approach to solve this dilemma is the development of nanosized biocompatible polymer-based micellar nanoparticles (MNPs), created from methoxy poly(ethylene-glycol) poly(ɛ-caprolactone)-methoxy poly(ethyle

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) remains a significant health challenge for populations in developing countries. LF is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes, mainly caused by the filarial nematode, Wuchereria bancrofti, prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. Since the present drugs develop complications, including adverse side effects, lack of specificity, and development of drug resistance, the present study focused on developing the potential anti-filariasis drugs targeting crucial proteins for the nematode life cycle. We have identified the therapeutic compounds by targeting the en

Brugia malayi and B. pahangi, potential zoonotic pathogens transmitted by mosquitoes, are believed to primarily infect dogs and cats as reservoir hosts. Although previous studies have indicated nematode infections in lions, particularly in zoo environments where human contact with these reservoirs is possible, limited documentation exists regarding Brugia sp. infections in lions in Thailand. This study aims to investigate a case of Brugia infection in a lion from a zoo in Thailand. The blood sample was collected and examined from a female lion, using staining methods to morphologically identif

Malaria continues to be a global public health problem although it has been eliminated from many countries. Sri Lanka and China are two countries that recently achieved malaria elimination status, and many countries in Southeast Asia are currently in the pipeline for achieving the same goal by 2030. However, Plasmodium knowlesi, a non-human primate malaria parasite continues to pose a threat to public health in this region, infecting many humans in all countries in Southeast Asia except for Timor-Leste. Besides, other non-human primate malaria parasite such as Plasmodium cynomolgi and Plasmodi

Aedes aegpyti mosquitoes are vectors of several viruses of major public health importance, and many new control strategies target mating behaviour. Mating in this species occurs in swarms characterised by male scramble competition and female choice. These mating swarms have a male-biased operational sex ratio, which is expected to generate intense competition among males for mating opportunities. However, it is not known what proportion of swarming males successfully mate with females, how many females each male is able to mate with, and to what extent any variation in the male mating success

Plants are a treasure trove of biological materials containing a wide range of potential phytochemicals that are target-specific, rapidly biodegradable, and environmentally friendly, with multiple medicinal effects. Unfortunately, the development of resistance to synthetic pesticides and antibiotics led to the discovery of new antibiotics, antioxidants, and biopesticides. This has also led to the creation of new medications that work very well. The current study aimed to prove that ornamental plants contain specialized active substances that are used in several biological processes. Mosquitoes

An arbovirus belonging to the Flaviviridae family and the Flavivirus genus, the Zika virus (ZIKV), has profoundly transformed global health perception. Historically, ZIKV infections were considered infrequent, with generally mild manifestations. However, this perception changed dramatically when the virus quickly spread from Asia to the Americas, impacting many nations. It was alarming that there was a connection between ZIKV infection in pregnant women and the beginning of microcephaly in their offspring. ZIKV control and treatment are further complicated because Aedes mosquitoes, which prima

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that can vertically transmit from mother to fetus, potentially causing congenital defects, including microcephaly. It is not fully understood why some fetuses experience severe complications after in utero exposure to ZIKV, whereas others do not. Given the antigenic similarity between ZIKV and the closely related virus dengue (DENV) and the potential of DENV-specific antibodies to enhance ZIKV disease severity in mice, we questioned whether maternal DENV immunity could influence fetal outcomes in a nonhuman primate model of ZIKV vertical transmi

Human and veterinary filarial nematode infections are a major health concern in tropical countries. They are transmitted by biting insects and mosquitoes. Lymphatic filariasis, a group of filarial infections caused by Brugia spp. and Wucheria bancrofti affect more than 120 million people worldwide. Infected individuals develop swollen limbs and disfigurement, leading to an inability to work and ostracization from society. Control and prophylaxis for these infections involve mass drug administration combinations of anthelmintics including diethylcarbamazine (DEC). DEC has actions on microfilari

Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne virus that poses an incomparable public health problem, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas. Vaccination remains the most rational measure for controlling DENV infection. In this study, an ultraviolet irradiation (UV)-inactivated DENV-2 carried by N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan nanoparticles (UV-inactivated DENV2 TMC NPs) was investigated as a potential non-replicating dengue vaccine candidate. Using a human ex vivo model, the human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDCs), we showed that TMC served as both a vaccine vehicle and a potent adjuvant. T

La Crosse virus (LACV) is a mosquito-borne orthobunyavirus that causes approximately 60 to 80 hospitalized pediatric encephalitis cases in the United States yearly. The primary treatment for most viral encephalitis, including LACV, is palliative care, and specific antiviral therapeutics are needed. We screened the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences library of 3,833 FDA-approved and bioactive small molecules for the ability to inhibit LACV-induced death in SH-SY5Y neuronal cells. The top three hits from the initial screen were validated by examining their ability to inhibit vi

Phlebotomines are important vectors of bacteria, viruses and protozoan parasites. Protozoans of the genus Leishmania which cause visceral and cutaneous leishmaniases, are among the most important etiologic agents transmitted by sand flies. Different blends of human and animal volatiles have been evaluated for use in surveillance and/or control of hematophagous insects. With regard to phlebotomine sand flies there are few records of attraction under laboratory and field conditions. This study was carried out at two collecting sites located in a Brazilian town with a high prevalence of cutaneous

Ivermectin is the drug of choice for many parasitic infections, with more than one billion doses being distributed in onchocerciasis programs. The drug has been put into focus recently by the malaria community because of its potential to kill blood-sucking mosquitoes, thereby reducing malaria transmission. However, the activity of ivermectin against the malaria parasite itself has been only partly investigated. This study aimed to investigate the in vitro activity of ivermectin against asexual and sexual stages of Plasmodium falciparum Both asexual and late-stage gametocytes were incubated wit

Dengue is the most rapidly spreading viral disease transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitos. The pathogenesis of dengue is still unclear; although host immune responses and virus serotypes have been proposed to contribute to disease severity. In this study, we examined the circulating dengue virus (DENV) and measured plasma levels of inflammatory mediators. Ninety-eight patients during a dengue outbreak in eastern India in 2016 were included in the study. The presence of DENV was demonstrated by detecting NS1 antigen; IgM capture ELISA and serotypes were discriminated by type-specif

Introduction: According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the prevalence of neuroinvasive symptoms caused by the West Nile virus (WNV) has significantly increased in the past years throughout Europe, including Hungary. The rise may be attributed to changes in precipitation and climate. The WNV zoonosis is spread by mosquitoes. It is mostly asymptomatic, flu-like symptoms occur in 20% of the cases and in less than 1% a neuroinvasive disease with a lethal outcome may develop. Aim: Our aim was to demonstrate the neuroinvasive symptomatology and the diagnosis and treatment
