BACKGROUND: Activating RAS mutations in the germline cause rare developmental disorders such as Costello syndrome. Somatic RAS mutations are found in approximately 30% of human cancers. Keratinocytic epidermal nevi (KEN) represent benign congenital skin lesions arranged along Blaschko's lines. A subgroup of KEN is caused by hotspot oncogenic FGFR3 and PIK3CA mutations in mosaicism, but the majority lack these mutations.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) harbor gain-of-function mutations of the c-kit tyrosine kinase receptor. Imatinib mesylate is an inhibitor of c-kit and is indicated in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia and GISTs. Reported adverse effects of imatinib include hypopigmentation, depigmentation, and hyperpigmentation. Although the exact mechanism by which these occur is unclear, it is likely that inhibition of c-kit leads to downstream inhibition of the tyrosinase gene promoter and thus to inhibition of pigment production.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in pterygia to study the possible association between HSV and pterygia in Taiwan, a tropical country with a high prevalence of pterygium.
METHODS: Sixty-five pterygia, 10 normal conjunctiva, 8 conjunctival nevi, and 2 malignant conjunctival melanomas were obtained. Clinical histories were recorded for each patient. HSV detection was accomplished by polymerase chain reaction amplification of viral sequences. HSV-positive specimens underwent subsequent DNA in situ hybridization.
