Hirsutism, i.e. 'excess' body hair in the 'male' distribution, is a medical term applied only to women. Although associated with social and psychological difficulties including anxiety, social avoidance and a confusion of gender identity and although it raises important gender issues, there has been little systematic study. No prior research has focussed on the relationship between women's perceived degree of hirsutism and psychological distress. A survey of 53 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which often produces 'excess' hair growth, was carried out to assess any psychological co

BACKGROUND: Prior research suggests that elderly patients are less likely to respond to antidepressant treatment if they have low self-rated health. However, successful treatment for depression has been associated with improvement in self-rated health and other health measures.
OBJECTIVES: To examine measures of self-rated health, physical disability, and social function as predictors of treatment response in late-life depression, and to assess these same health measures as treatment outcomes. We hypothesized that greater impairment in these measures would predict poorer treatment response, a

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of bupropion sustained release (SR) and sertraline on anxiety in outpatients with recurrent DSM-IV-defined major depressive disorder.
METHOD: This retrospective analysis was conducted using pooled data from 2 identical, 8-week, acute-phase, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group studies of bupropion SR (N = 234), sertraline (N = 225), and placebo (N = 233). Symptoms of anxiety and depression were measured using the 14-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A) and the 21-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D-21), respectively. Percent

BACKGROUND: Women with bipolar (BP) disorder have more depressive episodes and drug-induced manic switches compared to men. Current guidelines suggest treating BP type I and type II major depressive episode (MDE) with both a mood-stabilizer and antidepressant. In a post hoc analysis, we examined the safety and efficacy of venlafaxine monotherapy in women with BP II MDE.
METHODS: 15 women with BP II MDE (mean+/-SD age: 37+/-12 years) were compared to 17 women with unipolar (UP) MDE (41+/-12 years). Patients were randomized to double-blind treatment with once versus twice daily venlafaxine up t

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that patients with a tendency to somatize psychological distress into physical symptoms could be differentiated from patients who do not somatize on the basis of specific predisposing factors defined by the High Risk Model of Threat Perception. Patients in a family practice were assessed for the tendency to somatize by the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) and by physician rating. Twenty-seven percent of the patients were positive for tendency to somatize by physician rating. These patients had relatively high negative affect, absorption, catast

OBJECTIVE: To examine posttraumatic symptomatology among women with eating disorders.
METHOD: A sample of 294 women diagnosed as having anorexia nervosa (n = 121), bulimia nervosa (n = 103), or eating disorder-not otherwise specified (n = 70) completed a version of the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Symptom Scale along with instruments measuring specific eating disorder symptomatology and comorbid psychopathology.
RESULTS: Of the total sample, 154 (52%) reported current symptomatology consistent with PTSD. However, severity of PTSD symptomatology was unrelated to either type or eating

OBJECTIVE: In recent years, there has been debate concerning whether distinct subgroups exist within the eating disorder, not otherwise specified (EDNOS) diagnostic category. One subgroup that has been suggested is binge-eating disorder (BED). While BED has received some research attention, relatively little is known about other possible subgroups within the EDNOS category. The purpose of the present study is to empirically investigate whether distinct subgroups exist within the diagnostic category of EDNOS.
METHOD: Participants were 53 EDNOS patients who presented to psychotherapy clinics fo

OBJECTIVE: To identify the diagnostic subtypes of eating disorders (EDs), the psychiatric comorbid diagnoses, and associated specific and nonspecific psychopathology in a series of 120 adolescents undergoing standardized assessment for an ED.
METHOD: Consecutive patients referred to our large pediatric hospital for ED assessment completed a semistructured diagnostic interview for children and adolescents. The following self-report scales were administered to assess specific and nonspecific psychopathology: the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), the Eatin

Current DSM-IV somatoform diagnoses may inadequately capture many somatizing patients in primary care. By using data from two studies (1,000 and 258 patients, respectively), the authors determined 1) the optimal threshold on a checklist of 15 physical symptoms to screen for a recently proposed somatoform diagnosis, multisomatoform disorder (MSD), and 2) the concordance between MSD and somatization disorder. The optimal threshold for pursuing a diagnosis of MSD was seven or more physical symptoms. The majority (88%) of the patients who met criteria for MSD had either full or abridged somatizati

To determine the relationship of pretreatment hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortical (HPA) axis measures in major depressives to the occurrence of relapse following discontinuation of successful treatment, we compared pretreatment demographic, clinical, and HPA axis measures in 35 patients with DSM-III-R primary major depression divided into two groups. One group (n = 26) required continuing treatment to hold their symptoms in abeyance, and the other group (n = 9) had been successfully tapered off medication, remained in remission, and had been medication-free for at least 1 month. BACKGROUND: This study identifies potential mediators of job strain effects on health by determining whether psychosocial factors known to predict an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality are higher among women who report high levels of job strain.
METHODS: Measures of job strain and other psychosocial risk factors were obtained in a sample of 152 female employees of a local corporation. Canonical correlation and analyses of covariance were used to assess relationships between job demands and decision latitude and other psychosocial risk factors.
RESULTS: A signifi

Psychological distress measured by the Talbieh Brief Distress inventory was compared between two groups of immigrants: consumers of supported housing (N = 302) and non-consumers living in community settings (N = 419), matched by sex, age and education level. Overall, distress level was found to be significantly lower in consumers of supported housing than in non-consumers. Consumers also exhibited significant lower hostility, obsessive-compulsive and paranoid ideation symptoms, but they were similar to nonconsumers on level of depression, anxiety and sensitivity. The results suggest that suppo

This 6-year follow-up study investigates the impact of interpersonal conflict at work on work disability among 8,021 male and 7,327 female employees aged 24 to 65 years at baseline. Marital status, marital conflict, monotonous work, hectic work pace, hostility, neuroticism, life dissatisfaction, and experienced stress of daily activities were included in survival analyses, which were adjusted for age, social status, and general health status. Interpersonal conflict at work predicted work disability only among women (RR 1.56, CL 1.01-2.39). This risk was confined to women who reported simultane

Idiopathic prostatitis is a common, often chronic condition in which psychological factors are suspected to play a role. Men with chronic prostatitis (n = 51) and a control group of 34 men without any chronic pain condition, equivalent on demographic characteristics, were compared on psychological and perineal muscle tension measures. Prostate-specific antigen and expressed prostatic secretion cell counts were also measured. Chronic prostatitis patients were consistently more elevated than controls on hypochondriasis, depression, and hysteria (MMPI), and on somaticization and depression (Brief

OBJECTIVE: The variability of the decline in immune function among those infected by HIV raises the possibility that psychological factors might help to explain the differences. Since studies of other populations have shown natural killer (NK) cells to be affected by psychiatric conditions, the authors examined this relationship in the context of HIV infection, expecting to find fewer NK cells to be associated with greater psychological distress.
METHOD: Forty-six HIV-negative and 74 HIV-positive gay men who were participating in a longitudinal study had NK cells enumerations performed (by st

Scores on rating scales measuring symptoms of depression, panic anxiety, state anxiety, trait anxiety, and agoraphobic avoidance were correlated, using multivariate statistics, with total thyroxine- and thyrotropin-releasing hormone concentrations in outpatients with major depression. A significant inverse relationship was demonstrated between agoraphobic avoidance and total thyroxine concentrations in female patients. No other symptom ratings were significantly associated with these thyroid indices. The depressed patients scored in the clinically significant range for agoraphobic symptoms. As

Incubation is the process by which life events influence the onset of psychiatric disorder after an appreciable delay. It has long been recognised clinically. In this paper we use data from the Camberwell Collaborative Depression Study to see whether incubation effects can be demonstrated in depressive illness. We used a novel adaptation of survival analysis for this purpose. The results suggest that incubation does occur in depressive disorder, that it is much less important than the effect of life events close to onset, that it is apparent in women but not in men, and that it is no more evid

A consecutive cohort of 145 adult Vietnamese refugees were personally interviewed and completed the Symptom Checklist 90 R self-rating scale on arrival in Norway. Sixty-two percent had witnessed bombing, fires and shooting, 48% had witnessed other people being wounded or killed and 36% had been involved in life-threatening situations or had been wounded in the war. Nearly all war trauma variables but none of the escape or refugee camp variables were significantly related to mental health 7 years after the end of the war. War trauma was significantly associated with mental health, also when age

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of a group stress reduction program based on mindfulness meditation for patients with anxiety disorders.
METHOD: The 22 study participants were screened with a structured clinical interview and found to meet the DSM-III-R criteria for generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. Assessments, including self-ratings and therapists' ratings, were obtained weekly before and during the meditation-based stress reduction and relaxation program and monthly during the 3-month follow-up period.
