Prevalence and associated risk factors of gastritis among patients visiting Saint Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The health of individuals is not only the absence of disease checked medically, but also encompasses social and psychological aspects. Any departure from the state of physiological, psychological, or social well-being was affected by different factors. However, all contributory factors were not equally responsible for affecting disease. This study was undertaken as a search for the relative effects of sociocultural and individual behavioral factors contributing to acute and chronic gastritis patients visiting Saint Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC). METHODS: A cros

A mixed-methods systematic review protocol to examine the use of physical restraint with critically ill adults and strategies for minimizing their use.

BACKGROUND: Critically ill patients frequently experience severe agitation placing them at risk of harm. Physical restraint is common in intensive care units (ICUs) for clinician concerns about safety. However, physical restraint may not prevent medical device removal and has been associated with negative physical and psychological consequences. While professional society guidelines, legislation, and accreditation standards recommend physical restraint minimization, guidelines for critically ill patients are over a decade old, with recommendations that are non-specific. Our systematic review w

Child is father of the man: child abuse and development of future psychopathology.

Available epidemiological data indicate that the abuse of children within families is a very common phenomenon, and is still on the rise. Among others, abuse includes direct physical and emotional violence to the child, as well as the indirect emotional trauma of witnessing interparental violence. These early trauma experienced within the context of the family can influence the development of the child's personality as well as predispose towards the development of mental disorders in adulthood. There are some important factors influencing the occurrence of abuse, or the conditions predisposing

Detecting depressive and anxiety disorders in distressed patients in primary care; comparative diagnostic accuracy of the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).

BACKGROUND: Depressive and anxiety disorders often go unrecognized in distressed primary care patients, despite the overtly psychosocial nature of their demand for help. This is especially problematic in more severe disorders needing specific treatment (e.g. antidepressant pharmacotherapy or specialized cognitive behavioural therapy). The use of a screening tool to detect (more severe) depressive and anxiety disorders may be useful not to overlook such disorders. We examined the accuracy with which the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale

Multi-informant assessment of maltreated children: convergent and discriminant validity of the TSCC and TSCYC.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the convergent and discriminant validity of two trauma symptom measures, the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC) [Briere, J. (1996). Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC). Odessa, FL: Psychological Assessment Resources] and the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Young Children (TSCYC) [Briere, J. (2005). Trauma Symptom Checklist for Young Children (TSCYC). Odessa, FL: Psychological Assessment Resources]. METHODS: Children's scores on the TSCC and their caretakers' ratings on the TSCYC were analyzed in a study of 310 children presenting to one of two ch

Design of a multicentre randomized trial to evaluate CT colonography versus colonoscopy or barium enema for diagnosis of colonic cancer in older symptomatic patients: the SIGGAR study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The standard whole-colon tests used to investigate patients with symptoms of colorectal cancer are barium enema and colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is the reference test but is technically difficult, resource intensive, and associated with adverse events, especially in the elderly. Barium enema is safer but has reduced sensitivity for cancer. CT colonography ("virtual colonoscopy") is a newer alternative that may combine high sensitivity for cancer with safety and patient acceptability. The SIGGAR trial aims to determine the diagnostic efficacy, acceptability, and economic costs

Routine ultrasound in late pregnancy (after 24 weeks gestation).

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic ultrasound is used selectively in late pregnancy where there are specific clinical indications. However, the value of routine late pregnancy ultrasound screening in unselected populations is controversial. The rationale for such screening would be the detection of clinical conditions which place the fetus or mother at high risk, which would not necessarily have been detected by other means such as clinical examination, and for which subsequent management would improve perinatal outcome. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects on obstetric practice and pregnancy outcome of rou

From Mission to MOSAIC: Growth and Resilience of an Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program.

BACKGROUND: Academic medicine programs face compounded challenges from public health crises, health inequities, and evolving federal policies pertaining to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Older adults and individuals living with serious illness-particularly those from marginalized communities-experienced greater morbidity and mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic and may continue to see disproportionately negative outcomes amid 2025 federal regulatory changes. METHODS: Within a Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, a DEI initiative evolved into the MOSAIC Council (Mission

Factors associated with COVID-19 preventive behaviors among patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes in southern Iran: a structural equation modeling study.

BACKGROUND: During the transitional phase of the COVID-19 pandemic-when vaccines were available but coverage remained low-individuals with chronic diseases such as hypertension and type 2 diabetes faced elevated risks, yet their adherence to nonpharmaceutical preventive behaviors was uneven, and the psychological determinants of this variability remained unclear. This study examined the HBM constructs as correlates of COVID-19 preventive behaviors among this high-risk population in southern Iran. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 338 patients (mean age = 43.83 ± 9.79 years

Perioperative Treatment of Neuropathic Pain (Nerve SPACE 2025).

UNLABELLED: Neuropathic pain following brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injury represents one of the most debilitating and least effectively treated sequelae of nerve trauma. WHERE ARE WE NOW?: Neuropathic pain affects a majority of patients with severe nerve injuries and is frequently more disabling than associated motor or sensory deficits. The current scientific understanding implicates maladaptive peripheral and central nervous system changes, including neuroma formation, nociceptor hyperexcitability, central sensitization, and cortical reorganization. Contemporary management relies o

The role of decentering and self-compassion in self-esteem regulation: how meditation and metacognition shape the use of self-esteem regulation strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has demonstrated that individuals' levels of self-esteem strongly influence how they regulate and protect their self-esteem. However, it remains unclear to what extent these regulatory strategies are shaped by trainable psychological processes such as decentering and self-compassion. METHODS: Two studies were conducted to investigate the role of decentering and self-compassion in self-esteem regulation. Study 1 (n = 230) examined whether decentering and self-compassion mediate the relationship between trait self-esteem and self-esteem regulation strategies. In

Escaping voluntary confinement: A framework to address Stockholm syndrome in cardiac nursing.

BACKGROUND: Due to high burnout and intense emotional investment in patient outcomes, nurses may inadvertently become trapped in dysfunctional interpersonal dynamics at work, resembling Stockholm syndrome. Understanding and managing this phenomenon requires field research. This study explores intervention strategies to address organizational Stockholm syndrome among nursing staff in cardiac care hospitals in Isfahan. METHODS: This sequential exploratory mixed-methods study comprised qualitative and quantitative phases. In Phase I, 21 cardiac nursing specialists were purposively recruited and

Psychiatric nurses' work experiences in non-psychiatric wards in light of their specialized competencies: a qualitative content analysis.

BACKGROUND: As mental health professionals, psychiatric nurses have the knowledge and skills to play a key role in responding to the psychological needs of physically ill patients. However, their presence in non-psychiatric wards is often accompanied by role ambiguity and limited use of specialized competencies. The aim of this study is to explain the experiences of psychiatric nurses concerning the role of their specialized competencies on their work experiences in non-psychiatric wards. METHOD: This qualitative study employed a conventional content analysis approach. Data were collected bet

Family structure and family satisfaction as factors of adolescents' autonomous motivation, cheating, and academic achievement.

There is considerable evidence showing that children growing up in two-parent intact families are more academically successful than children from other family structures. However, little is known about the psychological mechanisms underlying the relationship between family structure and academic achievement. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the role of satisfaction with family relationships as a mediator of the associations of family structure with academic motivation, attitude toward school, and academic achievement. Using a representative sample of Russian adolescents in grade

Transgender identity and psychiatric care in Italian prisons: a thematic analysis of systemic gaps and institutional challenges.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals face high levels of stigma, discrimination, and psychological distress, which are amplified in carceral settings. Italian prisons have introduced specialized sections for TGD inmates; however, limited empirical evidence exists on their function and the psychiatric, social, and institutional challenges emerging within them. METHODS: A case-informed qualitative design was applied to four TGD inmates housed in a specialized prison section in Northern Italy. Data were derived from routine psychiatric and endocrinological assessments, ad
